College Hoops Coaching Carousel

But what people were saying is Texas is the key. I don't think people were saying Underwood will go to Texas, I think they were saying someone like Musselman would go to Texas and then Underwood would be looking at that Arkansas opening. Tang would go to Texas and Underwood would go to KSU. Or Calipari to Texas and the carousel really starts to spin. Self could retire which really spin the carousel.

So really until Texas names their coach, we won't really know what is going to happen. If they just promote Terry, then I'd expect Underwood to stay 100%. But if anyone else gets that job it will get decidedly more interesting.
The Carousel as we know, is all about strike it while the iron is hot…soooo

Calipari…down v
Underwood…down v
Tang………..Up^
Oats….Up^
Musselman…Up^
Gates….Up^
Satan…..down v

Oats goes to Kentucky
Tang/Gates goes to Alabama
Musselman goes to Texas
Calipari goes to Arkansas
Underwood goes to K-State (take #2)
Satan goes to Hell

I dunno 🤷‍♂️ maybe? It could happen.

PS: In a no-holds-barred steel cage match in the Pizza Hut P-lot…who wins between Daddy Brad and Satan?

Brad is staying for a couple of reasons. The big one is his buyout. Only a handful of schools can pull that off with comfort (Kentucky?).

Brad is 65. Hell, I'm 61 and would hate to start over again (see Kansas State).

Those are two huge hurdles that limit his options in my opinion.

Finally, what would make me leave is a fan base and donors telling me what to do. I get the feeling that is what is behind this, but in the end ... he stays.

Usually a pretty good barometer of these things.

It's very unlikely that Underwood and Illinois' best real options aren't going to wind up being each other and no one involved is dumb enough to fail to understand that.

I think Underwood’s best option is Illinois. I don’t see any other team besides Kansas State offering him their job, and Illinois is a far better job than K State.

Now is Illinois best option Underwood? If Sean Miller can be acquired, then no. Sean Miller is the best option for Illinois

If Underwood stays, the team needs to go to the Sweet Sixteen or more or else it may actually be his final season next year. Next year is very important. The fanbase isn’t going to be too happy if they are one and done again or don’t get past the second round or miss it entirely.

Brad, per a search, is 59

But, your point still sticks.

Where did the last 6 years go. Did the Illini win in that time?

Texas has other taxes (property/personal property) that make up a lot of that difference. The actual fully-burdened tax rate when you consider all forms of tax actually doesn't vary that much from one state to another (with some exceptions). One way or another, we all have to pay the man.
My advice is to stop being smart and correct. Lots of people don’t like it.

I agree. They only won one regular season B1G championship, one B1G tourney championship and like two NCAA tourney games the last 6 years he has been the coach. That’s not great at all and not that acceptable. Next year is very important. If we don’t make some noise in the big dance, it’s time for a new direction.

I said this last year when people were worried about BU jumping on the carousel. But teams start over every year now anyway, so I'm not sure that's as big of a factor anymore.

I'm gonna say, Kelvin Sampson to Texas, BU to Houston. This could come true especially if Houston makes it to the Final Four. They'd have to be the favorite since it's in Houston.

EDIT: Or someone else to Houston and BU backfills that position.

EDIT 2: I am NOT an insider. I'm an outsider!

Penn State is the worst job in the Big Ten, and I don't really think it's even close
Northwestern?

Rockford = downstate?
Everyone has a different definition, but the one Wikipedia uses and the one that’s by FAR the most useful in a functional sense is that Downstate Illinois is the part of Illinois that is NOT a part of Chicagoland. It draws a much neater parallel with “Upstate New York,” and Rockford people have infinitely more in common with Peorians than anyone in Chicagoland, IMO.

Northwestern?
At Northwestern the fans at least show up when the team is decent, and you have Chicago in your back pocket. Penn State is in the middle of nowhere, arena is empty even if they are good.
