Where exactly besides here is this being "reported"
We've discussed this multiple times in multiple threads. Once again, Jeremy Werner has discussed the rumors on the Illini Inquirer podcast, as has Mike Carpenter on the 200 Level, as has Ryan Evan on Keepin' It Orange and Blue, etc. etc. Hell, Loren Tate put his own message out there to calm the masses.

It seems to me that those who suggest firing BU seem not to account for the fact that it costs money to fire someone under contract. On the other hand, if he finds a nice shiny new job (and I have no knowledge of whether he will or wants to) he, or his shiny new employer, will pay us something north of $9,000,000 and even in the big money world of NCAA sports that is not an insignificant amount. It would at least go a long way to setting up a proper replacement.

That said, I hope BU stays and gathers a Natty. Or three.
I'd settle for getting out of the 1st weekend...

If we get a new staff and the "rock star" staff mentioned all comes together, does Chet stay with BU or does he venture out again. Chet seems to have connects everywhere. Seems like such a good dude, I hope he can plant roots somewhere.
I am starting to hope he leaves so I will quit hearing the term "Chet." Nobody ever called him that as a player, an adult, a coach, or anything except on this message board...o_Oo_O

More The burbs or Chicagoland versus downstate. No?
Either. West Aurora grad here. We always used chants of downstate. It’s only Chicago myopia. Same mentality that sent the sewage downstate when they reversed the flow of the Chicago River

Random Thoughts:

* Sean and Brad are both exceptional coaches and we would be lucky to have either…given they want to build something HERE.

* IF Brad doesn’t want to be here. I’d rather have someone who does/at least pretends like he wants to be here. You’ve gotta be all in.IMO No, I haven’t been a D1 coach. BUT..it’s just too hard to fake it in my experience. Whether it’s coaching the Illini or teaching 5th grade. These kind of things have a way of going downhill fast. I guess that we can hope he wants to improve his own stock from last season and will try extra hard despite being unhappy?? Hoping someone wanted to at least improve his stock…didn’t work out so well with Matthew Meyer.

* Sean has been at Xavier for 1 year
And he’s willing to at least entertain the idea of coming here. Yet, at the same time that’s what frustrates some of us about Brad…discuss…

No, Carole King…no one does stay in one place anymore…Not players…not coaches….nobody.

* I think it’s interesting about how all the talk of Brad being an “analytics guy” just kinda fizzled out like a stale fart after it became glaringly obvious that we were going to continue to shoot high volume, contested threes all season long. Kinda shoots the hell outta that argument being the only thing that governs coaching decisions…doesn’t it?

*I still don’t understand the people that think Brad is a bad X’s and O’s coach. He’s not. I don’t care if you’re Gentry or Cohen or…whatever so-called crackerjack wunderkind of the month. If you don’t have control of your team…none of it matters. If you wanna be critical of Brad’s coaching be critical of his lack of control.

(If control is an illusion…it’s a helluva a illusion…watch any functional, cohesive basketball team.)

The hypothetical isn’t firing him in the traditional sense, and then having a coaching search to replace him. This would a bird-in-hand situation where SM feelers were sent out while BU had his feelers out, and SM willing to put ink on paper. If you’re JW you need to pull the trigger in that situation, imo. Otherwise, yes I agree, that firing BU then searching for a coach doesn’t make sense.

Also, it’s not just the yelling and lack of tourney success for BU. Look at the program from an impersonal perspective and the program is in a bit of chaos, beyond the new normal of the portal.

3 Top 50 guards have transferred, as well as players like Alan griffin and Podz who would’ve helped their respective teams. No surprise guard play has been a chronic issue.

BU’s entire coaching staff quit on him one year. Red flag?

Come on guys, everyone else outside the fanbase can see and make sense of this.

Brad's a smart guy. He's well aware of his job security here. Firing him would be an absolutely ludicrous decision. Annoying as it may be, he's going to keep his eyes on the coaching market. Can't blame the guy, he's got hand.

Yeah I'm not sure I agree with this either. And to be clear, my preference is very much keeping Brad and I hope he's here for a long time and continues to grow with the program.

That said, he's gotten 3 contract extensions in the last 4 years and still hasn't made it past the first weekend. So while I would not support firing Brad, I would totally understand Josh at some point drawing a line in the sand. Are we really gonna keep doing this same dance every offseason where his job security and salary keep going up despite not breaking through competitively? When he's already one of the highest paid coaches in the country? At some point I could justifiably see Josh saying "Thank you for everything and best wishes in your future endeavors. Nothing personal, but if someone else is willing to make you a top 3 paid coach with a top X buyout figure, then by all means take that."

So the question is, is Texas or whoever really willing to make that kind of offer? I honestly have my doubts. Sure the whole college basketball world has seen the success that he's had here, but they've also seem the flaws/question marks. Should Brad be a top 3-5 paid coach in the country? His results are certainly not top 3-5.

And again, I like BU a lot. I just think there's a point where you have to be willing to walk away as opposed to handing out a new extension every year on the basis of perceived leverage that frankly might not currently exist and most certainly will not exist next offseason if this team doesn't break through.

Care to link some articles or something? JW cannot fire Brad after he's completely resurrected the program from the Groce era. He just can't. Aint nothin' you can say. He just can't do it. The needle will have to point further downward and for a lot longer time than 1/2 a season for this to happen. If you want to bet a large sum of money on whether Brad is fired in the next 0-6 months, let me know and I'll send you my info.

Or he just doesn’t extend his contract any longer and brad sees the writing on the wall.

At that level of pay and visibility, both the terms “firing” and “justifiable cause” often become a grey areas. If their relationship has soured enough, Josh has options…just might take some time to execute on them.

frankly, another season like this one (lower half of Big ten, out in 1st round) is probably enough ammo.

I’m not wagering because the hypothetical is dependent on Miller being on board, and I have no real idea if he’s even interested.

Theo Epstein cannot fire Joe Maddon after he led the Cubs to their first World Series title in over a century. He just can't.

Adapt or die.

(I am not trying to say we need to adapt at this time; just that we can't use this excuse not to move on if it's plainly time.)

1. That isn't true at all.
2. The program isn't in a bit of chaos
3. Griffin had to leave, Podz wanted playing time and Miller's had no issues with Brad and really didn't want to leave
4. Coaches and ADs don't think anything you said is true.

So you are outside the fanbase? Why are you here then? Go away.

You think Miller would enter situation where the previous coach took an absolute dumpster fire and turned it into a B1G leading program in a matter of 3 years, but was then fired after a 20 win season with a NCAA berth?

The Texas thing rubs off on you very quickly *if* you relate to the mindset and vibe, and I imagine it would be no different for coaches and recruits... I hope Underwood stays, but I could also see him falling to the allure of Austin/Texas and what it has to offer that Champaign does not... Y'all look me up if in Austin and we'll go bbque hopping!

Texas BBQ? To borrow a line from a movie we all know... 'Is This Heaven?' Answer: YES. It's Texas BBQ!

If Coach tastes the real stuff... that's just not playing fair.

Pro sports vs college seems a little apples/oranges to me. Do you think it's time to move on based on his performance? That's the gist of my argument.

I literally said in the post you quoted that I am not advocating firing him at this time. But the notion that we can't at some point just because he resurrected our program is silly.

Guenther held onto Weber for far too long because he took us to the championship game and they were buddies. If it becomes plainly time to move on, I don't want us hanging onto Underwood just because he resurrected us.

I also don't think it's apples and oranges. Both college and pro sports involve large sums of money driven largely by having a winning program.

You read my message and thought I meant he gets a lifetime pass? I don't think you really thought that... did you?
