Yep … If Self calls it a career, then it’ll be Oats …

Oats is also about to hire a major Big Ten assistant to his staff …
What are the odds Self retires this offseason? You would think if he was planning to he would have done it by now. Has he not fully recovered? I thought I read he was with KU in the shoot arounds before tournament games but wasn’t on the bench. I assumed that he wants to coach

I think if he is able to coach he will. He obviously doesn’t need the money and has already proven he is one of the top coaches in the modern era

We will find out in 2 days. He has a press conference

No, I'd want to, but I'm not firing a guy that brought me a National Championship, 8 Final 4s, and 10 Big Ten Championships. He gets to retire on his own terms.
I agree…
Oats resume is not as impressive as people like to think it is either:

you risk getting yourself in a Boeheim situation in a real hurry with that mentality. You give a lot more slack than anyone else ever would, but you don't let it happen on entirely their own terms.

Boeheim had 9 rough seasons to end his career, best year in those 9 was 7th in the conference. That said, in those 9 rough years he made a Final 4 and 2 Sweet 16s. What really hurt Boeheim was the recruiting fell off.

The last 3 seasons for Izzo have not been the greatest, but before that he won the Big 10 3 seasons in a row. For recruiting, Izzo continues to recruit at a high level and has 2 5 star guys coming in next year, though I don't think Fears is a 5 star guy regardless what his ranking says. And of course, he was a whisker away from an Elite 8 or better this season. So no if I'm MSU, I'm not worried about Izzo.

Boeheim in recent interviews has said what hurt them recently was the transfer portal(cites Pitt and NC State as examples of teams who had worse rosters than Syracuse but got better due to the transfer portal). Boeheim didn't play that game as much so that's his reasoning. He preferred continuity and thought he had a decent roster coming back for this year(might just be wishful thinking on his end)

And just got another top 50 kid committed yesterday in 2024 …

Izzo doesn’t like the portal but he still kills HS recruiting …
Though Izzo has had some highly rated misses. I think Fears could be one of those guys, we'll see how his jump shot comes along, but Max Christie, Pierre Brooks and Sissoko have been meh, Rocket Watts underperformed, and even Malik Hall is much less than I expected him to be. His top 2 guys this year were from the portal.

I mean we’re talking about top 50 talent … Half the battle is just landing those kids …

Christie got drafted … Booker will get drafted …

Izzo came into Illinois and Indiana and took a MCDAA … That’s not an easy thing to do …

Simple question bro...............are you worried at all about next season's fighting Illini roster ??......................I know it's a broad spectrum question , but i guess worried as will we have any weak spots on the roster like this last year with Skyy leaving mid season and showing a depth issue at PG........

I'll hang up and listen !!!!!!!!!

They will be the prohibitive favorite to win the conference next year

Not if Edey comes back
Eh, I think it would be close ... people might be somewhat soured on Purdue, given they looked a little more shaky toward the end of the conference season and then became the second #1 seed ever to lose in the First Round. I would bet on Purdue getting only a few more votes than MSU, with the Spartans having an outside chance at being the favorite.

The interesting thing would be where we would be ranked if we got everyone who hasn't currently entered the portal back (especially Hawkins and Shannon) and supplemented those two with a couple of good transfers. On one hand, people might be a bit jaded that we "didn't live up to expectations" this past season (some publications had us as the preseason Big Ten favorite and most had us top three), but the whole "everyone has another offseason together" often leads to higher expectations, too (see a Bubble Indiana team in 2022 being the clear league favorite in 2023).

Purdue started 2 Fr guards, including a Fr PG. Do you think those guys are going to get worse? They can return literally the whole team, but my Purdue grad buddy thinks they will lose a couple of transfers to Notre Dame, 1 being their highly rated guy sitting because of Edey, Trey Kaufman.
