Sharing the load on recruiting across all 3 assistants would allow each more time for X & O …
It doesn't hurt that the NCAA is allowing for 2 more coaches...and roles could be changed for someone like Geoff, in order to bring in another recruiter!

The Council supported an increase of two coaches in men's and women's basketball. These additional coaches may engage in coaching activities but may not recruit off campus. The rules change codified a waiver in those sports that allowed noncoaching staff members to engage in skill instruction.

It’s been discussed all year … Not a done deal by any means but I’ve hinted at it many times … So has @illini0440

Brad and O talk pretty frequently … O is open to coming back …
And it seems plausible that Kentucky would see some appeal in shuffling some things around as well, which is likely a critical part of this.

And if Onyenso could be a part of the package that would be splendid. He and Dainja would be quite a duo at C.

Question on if O comes back. If there is going to be more of a focus on recruiting the portal going forward and the days of 5 man HS classes are probably more limited if not done, does that have any impact on who recruits well. Or is it if you are an elite recruiter you’re an elite recruiter whether at the HS level or through the portal?

Would be quite the uno reverse card to pull what Kentucky did (albeit smaller) to us. Move a recruiting coach to the bench and hire back Orlando.

I'd be willing to bet the 5 man HS class days are over. Like BU has said repeatedly, you want to get "old", and stay old.

Recruiting is all about creating, developing, and leveraging relationships. You are still going to have to hit the prep circuit hard. You only have 60 days a year to pull from the portal. If you don't have a prior relationship with an in-demand player, you'll be fighting an uphill battle to win those transfer recruitments.

Old and experienced aren't the same thing. You want to get old in the system, not in age.

Mr. Johnson, who committed to us decades ago ( humor ) has really gotten old in our system without even donning a uni yet ....I really admire a recruit like him who commits and stands by it ................can't wait to see him rattling some rims.....

From an article published this morning:

Underwood will be on the road more later this spring and in the summer watching high school recruits on the grassroots circuit. It’s something the Illini coach will continue to do even as roster building has changed.

“That’s becoming less and less a deal because, to be honest, everybody’s trying to get old,” Underwood said. “We’ll still do that knowing you may get them in the portal again. Right now, everything’s done through a lot of film. I’m probably watching as much or more film than I ever have. (Director of recruiting and scouting Tyler Underwood) is just stashing players on my computer.”

“I think one of the big challenges we’re all facing, if you watched this year’s tournament, is old won,” Underwood said. “The average age of San Diego State’s players that play is 23 years of age. That’s a big difference between an 18-year-old. We have two more years of COVID years. You have the widest discrepancy ever in age, and everybody’s trying to get old. Everybody’s entering and everybody’s looking, and it’s challenging.”

Now that Self has 100% confirmed he will keep coaching, I think the Underwood leaving rumors can be put to bed
