"The panel determines that a postseason ban would unfairly penalize student-athletes for the actions of coaches and staff who are no longer associated with the program"

Had to laugh/cringe when I read that. When have they ever cared about athletes that had nothing to do with a schools violations?

This punishment will have lasting effects, sadly.

I would now submit that all the work that has been done to come to an agreement over revenue share/NIL will be all for moot.

If Texas Tech wants to pay high school kids 5 million dollars to come to Lubbock...screw your 3rd party valuation we can pay whatever fine you levy. When actual cheating is punished with financial penalties --no Postseason ban, no vacating, no scholarship reduction....

How could you ever levy a serious punitive judgement on a school ever again?! You gave out a 20 million dollar fine to a school with a 17 billion dollar endowment.

Also, millions if not billions of dollars were wagered over those games... it's hard to claim NCAA is maintaining Institutional control over the sport if they slap you on the wrist for what is clear and present cheating.

IANAL but could someone sue Michigan over cheating in a sport where betting is authorized through the leagues affiliation with the sports betting platforms?

IANAL, but I have a hard time seeing anyone being successful in a lawsuit you describe .

really hard to prove what caused the financial loss in this scenario . cheating in sports is done all the time by players , coaches & mgmt .

Its a common acronym that we have held over from our time litigating Terrance Shannon's case.

I don't even like thinking about that dark period in Illinois fandom. Worse for the incredible young man who had to endure it

scUM appealing it won’t pay a dime
Not vacating wins is a stupid decision by NCAA. Wtf! USC had to vacate their BCS title because Reggie Bush's parents got money from an agent. That didn't give USC any competitive advantage on the field. Michigan's sign stealing scheme DID give them a competitive advantage. No wonder people think NCAA is a joke!

Forfeiting wins does nothing. They got the wins whether a record book admits it or not.

The obvious answer is forfeiting future post-season play. That has the greatest impact on the program and is the best deterrent to future cheating. The NCAA has said they considered a post season ban, but decided against it to protect the current players who were not involved in the sign stealing scheme.

The easy solution to that is begin the ban the following season and allow players to transfer out ahead of time.

How in the world can the NCAA let Michigan decide what games he will be suspended be suspended for? Shockingly he will be on the sidelines for both Oklahoma games.

100% agree with the sentiment. However, I think the same way you see plea deals in court that shock the conscience, the NCAA is no different. They know programs can and will fight back, so they bake that into the punishment. Flexibility in the suspension is just a way to make it more palatable to the target to try and make the punishment stick.

For clarity, the comments below aren't to defend Michigan, since there's evidence there were violations. I'm going off second-hand reports, but I'm told that programs have known for a looong time that there's scouting of signs, so the smart ones don't use the same ones from game to game or even drive to drive. And sign "stealing" per se is not the issue, but the way they went about it. FWIW the Wikipedia entry on this talks about several BIGTEN programs doing the same and even sharing signs of Michigan's with each other. The claims of how much advantage they had seem wildly exaggerated IMHO.

For those that think a $30 million hit isn't a deterrent, I think you're smoking something. The infractions were before the Natty with the BIGTEN investiagation starting mid-Oct. If they hadn't gone all the way, they'd presumably still have the bill and had to finish the season. I would think it could also backfire for teams that knew how disguise signaling or use it against them. If you want to buy a Natty, tOSU is the way to do it --get yourself a Yankees level roster.

In my observations, the NCAA comes down HARD on anything that threatens their business model. Keep in mind that the NFL moved to more expensive helmets so communications were more secure. It's been brought up with the NCAA but hasn't been adopted. The sport really needs more consistent practices around punishment and enforecement, but we've known that forever.

28? Why not 32? Or will the B1G have 28 teams by then, and we just play each other. ;)

Edit: I think 16 is too much, personally. I think 8 makes more sense, but that likely would not help us.
a 28 team model will give the conf champs of each P4 a bye week while the other 24 get narrowed down to 12 , and then the 16 teams play the next weekend

In modern football with free transfers this is BS by the NCAA. Maybe wait until next year for ban as it is late to transfer this year.
