taking SMU is all about access to Texas and the media markets there , especially Dallas and Houston
SMU is probably the 5th most popular football program in Dallas behind Texas, A&M, Oklahoma and TCU. It’s probably not even the 5th most popular program in Houston.

I don’t know how much of the market SMU actually captures or even how relevant that is without a dedicated network like the BTN attached to its conference.

I think there are some notable issues with any "college football fan map" based on social media or whatever, including this one using 2021 Twitter followers, but according to this:

Dallas County, TX
14.0% Texas
10.8% Texas A&M
10.8% Oklahoma
10.3% SMU
9.7% TCU

Tarrant County, TX
40.3% TCU
11.5% Texas
10.1% Oklahoma
10.0% Texas A&M
7.9% Texas Tech

Collin County, TX
17.5% Oklahoma
14.7% Texas A&M
14.2% Texas
10.6% Texas Tech
9.0% Baylor

Denton County, TX
31.2% North Texas
15.4% Oklahoma
12.3% Texas
10.2% Texas A&M
9.1% Texas Tech

It seems to have a weirdly paradoxical bias toward both the "local team" like UNT, SMU and TCU in their home counties and also rabidly followed teams like Oklahoma. I'm highly skeptical that there are more OU fans in Collin County than any of the Texas teams and I think it's a lot more likely that they just have a robust Twitter game, but I admit I'm not that familiar with Dallas.

every other "big" school is spoken for, and SMU is the only school not in a P5 league.
its their only option to get into those markets. its obviously a lousy option, but TV is probably telling the PAC its better to go after SMU, than Boise or UNLV

Correct, it's:

Houston: 29.4%
A&M: 18.2%
Texas: 12.4%
LSU: 10.9%
Alabama: 5.6%

I guess my sarcasm meter is broken, although with Gritty, it's hard to tell... ;)
Gotta keep those sarcasm meters well oiled and calibrated folks!

Anyway, I think Boise State would be a smarter addition for the Pac 12 than SMU if their intent is to actually build an athletics conference with a reason to exist and a coherent identity, but that's not the way the industry thinks anymore.

Of course, but $50 million each for one year is a heck of a dollar figure.

They'll be taking a net financial loss despite joining a much richer TV contract. But they have their reasons. Sensible of the Big 12 to take the cash.
how do we know that ESPN isnt funding all or part of it ?

The $100 million will be a deduction from their yearly distribution over the next two years. Most will be distributed to the other 8 legacy schools to offset the decrease in conference revenue.

It doesn’t seem like SMU could possibly be a better candidate for the PAC than an additional MWC school after San Diego St.

If they’re going to grab a school just for its media market despite being bad at football, wouldn’t UNLV be a better fit for the PAC 12 by pretty much every possible criteria?
Problem is unlv has already had the ufc $$$ as well as The Sanchez. Didn’t work. Program a lost cause despite valiant efforts

Moderate basketball success when Kruger was there, but that was the last bright (low watt LED) spot they’ve had in athletics since the shark.

And no, bobby petrino’s 2 week stint doesn’t count

If you’re going straight for Vegas market… it’s like LA, if the teams don’t win no one will pay attention. Other things to do

PAC 12 needs Boise and San Diego state. No one else, even smu, should be considered.

My personal non-expert opinion is that it would work out well if that’s what the pac 12 (10 again ?) did

I would love to elaborate as to how I’ve come to that conclusion, but I did that on an earlier post

What is the point on waiting around for the best brands out there? Pac schools maybe dont make as much sense if the SEC is focused on geography but if the B1G is interested in Virginia, UNC, etc., why wait? Just seems like it gives the SEC more time to potentially claim one of the schools we might have wanted.

They're not interested. B1G is only interested in schools that will increase it's per school payout. Not many more schools outside of BIG/SEC fit that bill.

maybe Va and UNC fit. Maybe. Trouble with any ACC school, save ND, is the grant of rights buy out is too steep for them to do it.
those two schools are perhaps the only schools from pure ACC that work. But they arent going to the SEC anytime soon.

Im not sure that any schools in the PAC move the needle for the B1G. There is no reason for the B1G to move quickly here.
Its all about money AND fit. Fla St may move the needle on money , but not sure.
I just dont think the B1G is excited about them unless ND was part of it.
And I dont think ND is ready to join up yet. May never be. In the meantime , they cant afford to hire an OC from Utah. So who knows

Major metro areas B10 is missing in TOP 15. Have to bring new market to be accretive. Rutgers did not bring NY metro. However it gave excuse to show B10 network to alums who live in NY
#5 DFW - TX and TAM already SEC
#6 SF - really pro town - not sure Stanford or Cal get you this market
#7 Atlanta - GA already in SEC, not sure GTech gets you much
#8 Houston - not sure what school gets you this market, Univ Houston has never been big player. I think more Alums from TX and TAM
#10 Boston - really pro town
#11 Phx - take ASU
#12 Seattle - take WA
#13 Tampa - FL SEC, FSU -ACC

Sounds like B1G needs to get Texas A&M, Florida State, Washington, Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia Tech, Notre Dame, and some else (Oregon, Colorado, Stanford, Cal?) to maximize revenue (B1G, NBC, Fox, CBS), gain better access to good recruiting grounds, and encirclethe SEC. Does anyone know if FSU is working to join the AAU?
