the legacy of the Rose Bowl
"The legacy of the Rose Bowl" can mean a lot of different things to people, but if any of it is rooted in what brought the PAC-12 and the B1G together after World War II (seeing eye-to-eye on things like "African Americans should be allowed to play"), then you're taking the first steps towards joining me as a booster of the Greater B1G: America's bulwark against the SEC.

For everyone that is talking about the horrible travel for the teams since realignment, particularly the non-revenue teams.

The golf team goes (before expansion) this year:

September 9-10 to Washington
October 30-31 to California
January 27 to Florida
February 25-27 to Nevada
March 11-12 Georgia
March 25-26 Oregon
April 6-7 Georgia

Doesn't seem like they are too upset about traveling.

golf and baseball have always travelled south due to Jan-Mar weather in midwest

many other non revenue sports are indoors

swimming, gymnastics, volleyball, wrestling

Being willing to kill the Pac 12 and the legacy of the Rose Bowl just to make the next quarter's revenue projections is unfortunately something the Big Ten and Pac 12 have in common.
The Rose Bowl died with the BCS. Instead of being Tiger Bait in the 2002 Sugar Bowl, the Illini & Oregon were the first Big Ten and Pac 10/12 champions to not play in the Rose Bowl in 2002. Since then there have been only 7 seasons that have had the champions of the Big Ten and Pac 10/12 square off in the Rose Bowl.

This is extremely small potatoes and a different flavor than what we have been discussing: Will Ohio State v. Michigan stay in the final week of the year? Lots of tradition holding that game in place but expanded playoff and diluted value of winning that game this late into the season makes me wonder if momentum will build to push it earlier in the year. If you're guaranteed a playoff spot, or both teams are, why not just rest your starters?
scUm and OSU should play last weekend of the year since they have since 1935. Certain games should be played certain weekends ie the the red River should be played during the Texas state fair. Other games like Illinois and NW can be played any weekend

Why would that be any different than the B1G having schools on both coasts? Just because they’re called the Atlantic Coast Conference? The Big TEN has 18 schools.. are they universally laughed at for that?
I think its funny that the
1691796680791.png

has 18 member instead of 10.

I remember when Mike White was coaching and we were suing the NCAA and B10 to let Dave Wilson play that we were so mad people said we should quit the Big 10 and join the Big 8 turning them both into the Big 9

^This. The Rose Bowl is set to be one of the CFP semifinals (along with the Sugar Bowl) this upcoming season and will be one of the quarterfinal venues (in years when it's not a semifinal venue) in the expanded CFP playoff after the 2024 season.

OK. What am I missing here? ND
won’t join the ACC or any conference but is criticizing them for leaving Cal and Stanford out. Meanwhile ND is expecting 3X more revenue in their next media deal which is totally independent of the ACC media deal. It’s arrogant articles like this that make me think when someday ND asks to join the BIG, the BIG says, “Nah, we’re good. Go join the SEC”.

Yes, I don’t buy all the media fuss about extra travel adversely affecting student athletes. On a plane when traveling for work I can get decent food, sleep, and catch up on computer work or read. It should be considered an extended study hall for student athletes. This is extra time for coaches to make sure student athletes are staying on top of their scholastic duties. That’s how the business world works so student athletes should consider it part of their educational experience that most other students don’t get to experience.

Actually, I think it's a great question because the next dominoes to fall will be scheduling. The bottom line will be, well, the bottom line. What are fans willing to pay for? If gaming the playoff becomes a bigger consideration, they'll probably move it. I suspect those teams will have more to lose than gain, but it's hard to say. Look at this year for example. Michigan has a really weak schedule among contenders. Do teams target just getting in, or will they take risks in the schedule to be in the top 4? Lotta opinions and philosophies on scheduling. There's going to be a huge difference in seeding starting next year.

And once they have a 12 team format, do they expand further risking the value of the regular season? I feel like I already know the answer, since every big $ sports league has gone the route of diluting the regular season in favor of more playoff money.

It'll never happen, but I sometimes wish that too. What a flex move that would be. I'd love it even better if the SEC said no, too. Like, the Power 2 basically just tell ND they're tired of their antics.

The funny part of this article is that if ND agreed to join the ACC, they absolutely would take Stanford and Cal as well.

But yes, pure altruism here from ND. 😁

Looking ahead to a 12 team format, thought I'd look back at the past 2 years avg for 2024 conference affiliations of the top 12:

(5) BigTen
(4) SEC
(1.5) ACC
(1) Big12
(0.5) Other

It's difficult to see the BIG not having 4+ between USC, UM, tOSU, PSU, Washington, Oregon, and the rest of the mid-tier teams that cycle up and down. SEC obviously has had more elite teams and championships, but the depth seems to be as good or better.

Probably not too far off. If the past is a good judge of future predictions, counting up the number of top 12 teams each conference has had in the final AP poll over the last 10 years, and assuming everyone is in their future conference, you wind up with:
40 entries from SEC
38 entries from Big 10
19 entries from Big 12
18 entries from ACC
4 entries PAC4
1 entry AAC
There have also been 42 universities that have had at least one year of finishing in the top 12 of the AP poll over the past 10 years. The breakdown by future conference of accomplishing this feet is:
12 schools from SEC
13 schools from Big 10
10 schools from Big 12
4 schools from ACC
Stanford/Wash St. from PAC4
Tulane from AAC

… and yet it still draws over 90,000 live spectators and impressive TV ratings every year. Maybe tweaking some “traditions” will NOT kill the sport. 🤔

Did I miss a discussion on why the BIG would not want Stanford and Cal?
