Conference Realignment

The ACC is more and more looking like the unwieldy shot-gun marriage between football and basketball schools with Notre Dame half in and half out version of the Big East that half these schools fled to the ACC to get away from.

I thought the ACC wanted to get out of the deal
Most teams want to hold it together, but FSU, Clemson, UNC and Miami want to bolt - but I think only FSU, Clemson and UNC have guaranteed spots in the B1G or SEC - I think the B1G would love Miami too, but probably at a reduced share like Washington and Oregon.

the addition of Stanford , Cal & SMU just makes no sense in that it can’t possibly result in more money to the existing schools when all is said and done .

a conference with unequal members is a terrible idea and is doomed to fail fairly quickly .
this was orchestrated by ND , who is trying to buy more time , at no real cost to them except more airfare
I can’t remember if I read this somewhere or I made this up on my own, but I have a feeling this move was done for one reason only: to protect the ACC from complete collapse when FSU, Clemson, and UNC ultimately bolt (and they will).

They proactively added teams so they aren’t scrambling later like the PAC-12 was.

Are they the best quality teams? No. But they are three teams NOW so they don’t have to find three teams LATER.

That’s my feeling on all of this. I’m not sure ND has their hands in this as much as we want to believe.

If all the protected rivalries stay and the schedule stays at 9 games, Illinois will play the legacy Big Ten teams other than Northwestern and Purdue LESS than every other year.
Which is why I hope they go to more than 9 conference games. It seems a bit silly that we are playing Kansas tonight, but there are Big Ten teams we won't play all year. I'd rather play a Big Ten team like Mich. St. as a 10th conference game than Kansas in the non-conference. Or like last year, why play Virginia instead of Maryland?

Eighteen teams in 2024 - no divisions, 9 conference games, top two play for B18Championship.

Is it top two overall record, or top two conference only record?

Who will write the tie-breaker scenarios? and will they be re-written each week based on Ohio State and USC

A 10 conference games schedule is inevitable. The only question is when.

God, I would think it would literally dilute each school's payout, unless they are truly just SCREWING the three new schools, haha. That's really what I guess I still don't understand about conference expansion ... I guess "surviving" really is just a (short-term) end goal in and of itself, and only the Big Ten and SEC can afford to only add members that will actually contribute value.

Am I wrong but it seems that without divisions we could end up with 3 undefeated teams
at the end of a regular season and only two in a big ten championship game?

the only lens needed to view these adds is that it gives the ACC the buffer it needs when FSU, Clemson and possibly one or two more bolt. ESPN's contract will not be voided by those departures due to the backfilling of the 3 adds.

I'm thinking once we get to 20 teams. 2 10 team divisions, you play each team in your conference once and the the final week of the season is a cross division champ week, where teams play each other based on 1 thru 10 finish, however I'd make one exception, and I'll use East and West as our 2 division names:

Final week of season:
3E v 3W (better record w/ tiebreaks gets home field)
4E v 4W
.
.
.
9E v 9W
10E v 10W

Plus, the B10 Championship Semis:
2E @ 1W
2W @ 1E

Winners of those matches play the following week for the B10 Championship.

That'll get some huge ratings the final week of the season, make it like a mini playoffs, and it should get at least 2 teams in the college playoff every year, if not 3 or 4. It'll restore regional rivalries, reduce travel, and the fans will really like it for the most part in my opinion. That is until we expand to 24 soon after.
