Steele just passed 200 career innings as a MLBer. 201 now. Has a 3.28 ERA.

Developing a nice home grown starter from a mid-round draft pick was the missing ingredient from the Theo era. A decade’s worth of being unable to develop home grown pitching made long term sustainability impossible.

Being able to count on 8 quality IP a week out of the pen from the combination of Thompson and Alzolay - 2 more home grown guys - is also very nice.

Steele WAS a mid round pick of the Theo era.

Same draft as Kyle Schwarber, a round ahead of Dylan Cease.

I know he was a Theo acquisition. I was saying that those Theo teams weren’t getting contributions from cost-controlled homegrown pitching, and that’s why those Cubs weren’t able to sustain their winning.

Steele is the only amateur draft pick or IFA from 9 years under Theo to hit 200 IP with the Cubs. Alzolay and Thompson are close behind him. Godley, Blackburn and - of course - Cease have all done it with other teams.

The biggest indictment of the Theo-era pitching drafting and development is how little is left in the pipeline from his time here. Pretty much all the top Cubs pitching prospects were acquired by Hoyer.

All true, though the major draft resources were used on hitters to remarkably good effect.

The Cubs are good this year.... right? Is this for real?
Define “good.” They’re certainly better.

I still think the bottom third of the line up could be scary bad and that they might need to bring up some of the kids making noise at AAA.

I don’t like how undefined the back end of the bullpen is right now. There’s a lot of guys who *could* get the job done, but little proven record of doing so. And it’s unbalanced. The only lefty in the pen has pitched a grand total of 1 inning due to injury.

But all of my reservations could be fixed via internal options. There are some really fun bats and left handed relief options at AAA.

Only one lefty, but Leiter Jr. is a rare righty who has a lower Batting Average Against, and higher K% facing lefties than righties.

One of the things Jed has consistently been able to do is cobble together a respectable bullpen. I think Hottovy is a heck of a pitching coach.

They are better as we have a solid top of the lineup and we have a solid pitching staff. Players are buying in to What management is selling. We have a solid middle with Nico and Dansby which saves runs. Bellinger is playing to his 2019 ability and Wisdom is seeing the ball and hitting the ball all over the field. I said we are a contender to win the division and Milwaukee does not scare me.

Who are these guys? Nearly a month in and I'm shocked as to how well they are playing. My prediction of 74 wins isn't aging well. However, it's still early...
