Need to rattle off about 8 in a row to stay in it before the deadline.

To what end? Trade any pieces with short-term value and start looking forward to next year and the years beyond.

To what end? What every team tries to do.
Making the playoffs.
Having a winning season.
Being an entertaining team.

That time has basically passed unless they do something remarkable right freaking now. They have a week to save their season.

I'm more interested in seeing what the Hayden Wesneski's and Miguel Amaya's and Matt Mervis' have at this point really.

It's not really a matter of going into the tank. Guys like Stroman and Bellinger are impending free agents anyway.

Jed seems to want to be late-breaking in putting those guys on the market and that might be strategically smart, but go get what you can, add to a very strong farm system, and let's start seeing what some of those guys can do.

The Cubs will have buckets of money to spend in the offseason again, reuniting with guys they trade the next couple weeks is definitely possible.

When they sell, I want Barnhart and Mancini launched into the Sun. There will be literally no reason whatsoever for either guy on the team. (Unless Gomes is one of the traded, I guess, and then Barnhart backs up Amaya.)

Wesneski has been very good since going to Iowa. I want to see more of him. We’ve been well past time to bring Mervis back up.

While Tauchman has been a nice story and I have no problem planning on him being the 4th outfielder next year, I think he needs to give up at bats to Velazquez and Preciado the rest of the way. Frankly, Suzuki should probably ride some pine, too.

Cubs just traded for PJ Higgins this week. He can back up Amaya and play a bit of 1st as well.

Went to my first game in 2 years last night. When you can't hit (a pitcher who was 0-7), you can't pitch and you definitely can't field, there's a pretty decent chance you're going to lose. Totally flat.
Stroman had no defensive support but he seemed to just lose concentration. Only 1 good start in last 5.

Should have traded Stroman while he was hot. Now the return has lessened.

I generally agree with everything except Mervis. I had him in my Fantasy farm system and have watched every AB since I activated him the day he was called up to the majors. He really looks overmatched thus far at the Major League level. Hope things turn around for him.

The only thing that is keeping him in the minors is the success of Tauchman. if he wasn't playing well, Belli would have to play center and we would have no legitimate first baseman. We have to find out what Mervis can do this year so we can plan for next year.
If we sell, we have to play Mervis everyday.

They re-vamped Matt’s swing when he was demoted. They want him to get locked into it before promoting him again, Though it looks like he is getting comfortable again.
I wouldn’t be surprised to see some PJ Higgins at 1B, if/when Belli is dealt. Amaya seems to be ready for prime time. He is deserving of a major role moving forward.
How many catchers do we need? We might be able to get something for Gomes, though I hate to see him go. Seems to be a great clubhouse guy and resource for our pitching staff. I doubt anyone will be beating down our door for Barnhart at this point. He’s been very disappointing, at least in the batters box.

Well, we have a much easier schedule than both the Reds and Brewers over the upcoming pre-deadline week. This race may get much tighter over the next 7 days.
