No reason to rush back. The season is a marathon.
Yep, but that kid is a competitor, and tough as nails. He will try to talk them into it before it’s a good idea.
This is a really good team, although one with some obvious flaws, w/o him. We need him for the conference and for March more than we need to win these non-cons, no matter how hype is involved in a couple of those.
More of our youngsters will be tested early and often. That could pay off in March, but only if Mirk is back to being Mirk by then. There is no replacement for that dude.

Just awful. If it’s conference play, gotta assume there’s a chance he doesn’t come back and just begins preparing for the draft at that point.
The first few games of Conference play happen in early December. That jibes with a 3 month recovery estimate. Which, of course, is much longer than the 6-8 week estimate. Take a deep breath.

Feel like @ Duke November 17th is my over/under.

That said, following the Duke game its basically another week off then Winthrop and WKU until Uconn on December 4th...

If you're looking for a part in the schedule that makes sense for taking advantage of off-time and buy games, that's probably it.

Tiniest bit of positivity here but if hes going to be able to come back this year its better he got hurt now at the beginning of fall practice when there is time to adjust rather than right before the season.
It's also good that this is his 2nd year in system, so he won't be learning the full O & D on the fly, just the new stuff they implement this year.

I looked at games missed by players who average 10+ mpg for every team in the B1G dating back to the 2020 - 2021 season.

We've faired pretty well.

This isn't a perfect science. For example, I know that TSJ or Skyy Clark's missed games weren't due to injury. But I don't have that same knowledge for every team so I just counted games missed indiscriminately. Likewise, I know that Ty missed all of last season with an injury but I didn't include him in our games missed because he didn't fit the criteria of averaging 10 mpg and, I didn't want to go through the exercise of figuring out all the players on other teams who would've played 10 mpg but didn't because of an off season injury.

Here are the results in order of most games missed. (Do they have healthcare in the PNW?)

Washington - 326
Oregon - 310
USC - 262
Nebraska - 259
OSU - 246
IU - 206
Minnesota - 197
Rutgers - 178
UCLA - 169
-------MEDIAN------
Northwestern - 164
Michigan- 161
PSU - 152
Illinois - 140
Iowa - 126
Maryland - 89
MSU - 84
Purdue - 76
Wisconsin- 60

It's kinda like how every fanbase thinks officiating consistently goes against their team (often to the point of conspiracy theory). Everyone thinks their team has the worst injury luck because they are very familiar with the injury history of their own team, but unfamiliar with the injury history of other teams.

Brad is the head coach of a professional basketball team. Does he know that? Would an NBA owner tolerate the number of injuries we have seen just in practices?
Injuries happen in competitive sports. We're just more aware of injuries to our own team.

There are very few teams that can survive losing one of their top players. Duke can plug in another Burger Boy if they lose someone, but not sure there's anyone else that can.

I would rather have this injury occur now than during the season, If we can start phasing him into the lineup in November and be close to 100% by early 2027, that would be great. Just hope for no more injuries.

The only positive is the freshmen will het more PT that they otherwise wouldn’t have.
The negatives are obvious and multiple:
1. No practice time before games start and to build chemistry with what will be our best player and ultimate starting 5
2. We will not optimally perform in the non- conference marquee games without Mirk which will affect our NCAA seeding
3. All the work Mirk did with Fletch to get more athletic is down the drain. Can’t train your legs to be laterally quicker, quicker in general and better vertical during recovery from foot surgery.
4. He will likely need multiple games once he’s returned to get into top shape.
Arghh- this is so frustrating!!!!!!!

Of course it's terrible, but big picture we're looking at March/April as when we need all hands on deck and hope to make a run at a championship. If we drop a couple seeds we'll still be very dangerous with Mirk back. Ideal? Far from it, and missing a difference maker just isn't fun. But there is a possible silver lining with development and other guys getting minutes with him coming back sometime during the non-conference. Just hope he has a full recovery.

No way around it, this sucks. Add at least 4 to 6 weeks after his return to a game that our team will be up to form assuming no other injuries. Normally that wouldn't be as big of a deal but getting that number 1 seed and an easier shot at a tournament run was pretty reliant on us doing some damage in the non- conference. Facing all that talent early on with 2 healthy up to spead front court guys and it could ugly fast. If that happens your going to need michigan like dominance in conference games to get back to the 1 line.

this is great info.. can do the same with high impact players (20 or 25 mpg) as well. I'm not looking for confirmation bias just curious. I also thought we may be slightly over bitten by injury bug (or false allegation bug 🤮) but knew that everyone has injuries

I've hit my alotted Loyalty research limit for the day. But it would be interesting to see that breakdown.

For the record, I also expected us to be a little closer to the top when I started looking into it. I was mostly surprised though at the extremes on both ends. What is Wisconsin and Purdue putting in their water? And are Washington and Oregon practicing on a minefield?
