Is that a real quote from Brad? I really can’t belive it. Tim Beckman all over again.
I'll actually step up and defend Brad a little for saying that we "If we're just 5 for 16 from 3 at half (32%), it's a 2pt game. I thought we got great shots."

Here's the thing, we actually did get great shots that entire 1st half. The threes we took were some of the highest quality threes we took all season. An average college player will indeed hit at least 5 of those 16 threes almost every night. An elite three point shooter probably hits over 50% on those type of looks most nights. But that's the problem. We simply don't have that player on the team. We have nobody who can hit an open three at even a replacement player rate.

Point is those 1st half threes are threes every single shooter across the country would be salivating to take. They were mostly wide wide wide open in rhythm. Duke had about the exact same quality and hit 50%. We hit 0%. The problem isn't the quality of shots we were creating most drives, it's that Brad somehow managed to build a team predicated on making threes and yet has nobody on the team who can do it, let alone do it consistently.

I have no problem whatsoever with most of the threes we took that 1st half. Hell, Jaxon freakin' Kohler a career 25% shooter from 3, shot 80% on practically as wide open threes as we got that half. I do have a problem with the fact that nobody on our team seems capable of making an open three and that our coaching staff hasn't adjusted to that fact and installed an offense that makes a much much much greater focus on us getting shots inside the arc.

The shots we got were extremely high quality for anyone remotely capable of hitting threes. Unfortunately we don't have those players, so it doesn't even matter that they're high quality. We can't make them. So Brad's not wrong in what he said, but I do agree it's missing the point in that why are we shooting threes so often when nobody on our team can even hit open ones. With Beckman, it was more like if only we didn't give up 4 of those touchdowns and we scored 2 of our own, we would've won. At least making 5 of 16 threes should be remotely possible even though it apparently isn't for this team.

2 thoughts/observations:

1) Been thinking about the NIL era... A team can't "buy" more than 7-8 high quality players, because #8, 9, and 10 will just check out and leave the next year. But if you miss on the evaluation of a few of the 7 or 8, 1 or 2 get injured, sickness goes through a locker room, plus 1 or 2 redshirt....... You have the perfect storm. Your season is toast.

2) Saw DGL and Trey walking off the court after the handshake line (on TV)... DGL looked sad and broken. As I posted before after his last postgame interview, I would be SHOCKED if he's back.

Understand that I am stepping out on a limb here as I am a frustrated fan and don’t understand all of the details of a collegiate program.but again, you got your assistant back, you got two first round draft picks for next year, you got a lot of great supporting players like DGL, KB and TW and others, and you still get beat by 40. Not 15 or 25, but 40+. There is a leadership component needed her when you have that talent. We went from setting a record for beating a team on their own home court to the worst lost in program history. Something’s gotta be up.

I like Brad but he’s far from an elite coach. He’s not even close to Painter. He’s not in the same universe as Izzo.

Tough to trust him to make assistant changes when he hired his kid. Is he going to fire his own son?
No, Kwa goes back to his original position. Hamer gets fired. Those two are replaced with a new offensive coach and defensive coach. Tyler moves to the end of the bench in a learning role. Anything less than this is Brad throwing his career at Illinois away. If Geoff goes, you need another guy that is a mid to top tier assistant.

He is going to be told he needs to switch his staff at the very minimum so lets see if he walks or stays. While Brad rose us from the dead he has done nothing close to enough to hire his son in his 20s as a full time assistant it was a joke then its worse now.

You are a top 10 highest paid coach in the country it is your job to build a staff that nets top 10 program results.

Let’s go pay that Foster kid, 12 points in 7 minutes..

#2. Routine is boring but it leads to perfection.

I would take everyone back but Booth. I would offer some more NIL than others obviously.
Get rid of 3 young assistants. If brad isn't willing to get rid of them, he is gone too.

I'm more concerned with our defense at this point to be honest. Everyone is lost or gambling getting back cut. That leads me to believe our team is just exhausted. We can't hit threes and we can't defend. Pretty typical symptoms of a tired team that has been sick, injured, and had healthy players withheld from playing due to arguments with the head coach or simply forgetting they were on the bench.

Oh wow.. Brad just basically called Booth Trash...Listen to this interaction with the reporter. Attached the link with the timestamp starting the conversation.

This is merely the culmination of excessive hubris from the leader of a program that has become far too comfortable. This touches every aspect of the program. Coaching hires, recruiting, roster construction, lineup decisions, press conferences, etc. Not uncommon for the coaching greats in college basketball, but certainly eyebrow raising from those with far less accomplishments.

The USC game is when we were exposed for being so weak closing off the lane. We have done nothing to pack the lane to prevent penetration since then. Other teams have been getting into the paint, at will, ever since.

#367
This is very sad that we don’t have anyone bigger with the guts or physicality to take him on.

#368
My main problem with this game is the metrics. That is quite literally the one lone thing that's keeping this team in the tourney picture.

How will a 43 point loss do for the resume???

#369
Oof. if you were looking for coach to take some accountability for the worst loss in program history, that presser wasn’t it. Missing practices, players not making shots, players not rebounding, players not tough enough, players not guarding well enough, blah, blah, blah…

My main problem with this game is the metrics. That is the one lone thing that's keeping this team squarely in the tourney picture.

How will a 43 point loss do for the resume???
Nobody's missing the tournament because they got creamed by the #1 Kenpom team in the country. That's why this was effectively a free game.

I don't get the one out of Boswell and DGL. We should be hoping for both. Same with ty and Davis.

The only players I want gone are booth and Ben. Perhaps white.

I'm hoping we can recruit after this debacle. but I'm very concerned. If you're a player I'm not sure how you look at BU and be confident that your playing time will be fairly and rationally determined.
lol come on man. Recruiting will never be a problem with Brad. Every single coach has off seasons, Brad is still likely going to be in MM.

#373
this game shows how very far we are from legitimately competing in the tourney, at least this year. 2 of 26 from three?? i don't care if they're wide open or not Brad we still can't hit them!!

Our defense tonight was absolutely atrocious. Downright embarrassing. Duke is a great team, but we didn't have a clue how to defend them or have even an intelligible gameplan. What was very telling though is seeing our starters just quit on the defensive side of the ball when Duke put in their bench and Brad didn't immediately pull our guys from the game for that lack of effort. You're down 40 at that point, the only thing left is play 5 guys who want to be out there. There's no point in leaving starters that aren't trying out there other than to embarrass them
