Reality is Bielema was probably right. He needed the offense to chew up almost all of the clock. Worse yet is that Illinois started that possession with 6:06 on the clock, Duke had all three time-outs, plus the two-minute warning, and Illinois needed a TD (not a FG). The offense had to do a million things right on that final possession beyond score a TD. The run game had not been that effective all game, which made their task all the more challenging.
Generally speaking it makes sense to keep the ball out of the other team’s hands. But the defense got stops on the 4th quarter. Offense had three chances to take the lead and couldn’t get it done.

A salary cap won't solve the issue. Some teams will just ignore it - much like they ignored the earlier rules prohibiting payment to players.
Exactly right. It would be just like before NIL with certain teams paying paying players.

Nick Saban: “We’ve (SEC) already got nine teams in the top-25. It’s not like the Big Ten, where there’s three good teams at the top and then nothing.”

That’s the rep that the Big Ten generally has these days. And it’s not inaccurate until and unless another Big Ten steps up its game and raises its profile. And that includes the team in Orange and Blue.
The big ten is undoubtedly down THIS year.
But the for the last 3 before that…the BIG 10 has obviously been better than the SEC.
Period.

Total collapse for the Fighting Illini. Three point second half. Missing a WIDE OPEN receiver in the end zone. Unable to get stops when needed. This team may win three games playing like this....

On to basketball....
Agree. Houser not worth the money. Not impressed with him or any of our running backs. Give Boyd the keys, play the young guys and move forward. You need talent Brett. Not D2 transfers in the portal that nobody else wanted. This is the life of an illini football fan. But of course, look at that scoreboard. Its so big.

Yet somehow it works in pro sports. Why not try what’s proven effective? Or am I missing something? Does it not work in pro leagues?

You could actually wager $100 to win $110 by picking Ohio State to beat us on Sept 26th. That feels like a good way to earn 10%. I mean, can anyone envision us beating OSU this year?

If the NCAA had a track record of fairly handing out penalties to programs who cheated, I'd be all for it. Pro teams that cheat get generally hit pretty hard.
Then it could be done if the legal constraints were removed and if the NCAA recognized the threat. But I’m skeptical that they sense the looming crisis arising from a heavily tilted playing field and volatile rosters. They just see dollar signs.

Without caps, unchecked spending destroys sport, for many schools and fans anyway. I’m braced and ready to walk away at some point, as I have other interests competing for my entertainment time and money. I find the idea of watching the have’s hopelessly thump the have-not’s, with outcomes driven by budgets to be . . . completely uninteresting.

I’m sure there’s a better phrase to describe it than “uninteresting”. Unworthy of fan energy? Predictably boring? It starts to resemble a WWE match when the outcome is preordained, whether by a script or by money. Without reasonably even competition there is no sport.

Both statements are true. At first NIL did level the field. Then it exploded to create the have’s and the have not’s, tilting the field to the greatest extend we’ve seen (yet).

Stay tuned. It could get worse before it gets better. Some sort of effective salary cap would truly level things.
Sucks for football, but we seem to be a “have” in basketball. I’m okay with it. For now.

Lots of doom and gloomy. This is Week 2 and Duke is possibly a pretty good team as well. I mean they've won 5 straight dating back to last year including over Miami.

It was a disappointing result but Im not ready to say they won't still win 8-9+ wins. As you can see this season has already had many unexpected twists and turns. You just never know.

Hauck just seems to be darn happy making a ton of money before retirement. Guessing he grows the santa beard next, while talking nonstop about our darn good defense.

I don’t like to the defense but to be fair no defense would look good with this talent. What’s a major concern is our experienced and highly paid secondary has not looked good.

This isn’t the same duke team from last year. They Mensah and a lot of very good players. Realistically this is a game we should’ve won. We made way too many mental mistakes and played undisciplined. Hopefully that improves.

They caught him, so in that sense it 'works'. But in no way do I think the Clippers are the only ones doing it.

oh no I agree the talent is not there. I just don't want to hear how well we tackled, when it is clear that we have been among the worst in the country at tackling.

I think it was 20 missed tackles last week. Not tackling in camp doesn’t help but Kreutz is in his 5th year of college football. This still shouldn’t be an issue for a lot of these guys

Does it? Take the NBA as an example. They have 30 teams and a dedicated enforcement staff, yet they are currently dealing with an infraction. The NCAA, by contrast, has more than 1000 basketball programs (360 in Div. I alone) and a skeleton enforcement staff. That same staff must also oversee thousands of athletes from 20, or more, other sports. A salary cap might help, but it won't level the playing field.

there are ways to govern this properly
it involves
1. a players union & a CBA
2. players agreeing to submit tax returns & bank statements
3. schools agreeing to audits from CPA firms

Did Duke make a defensive adjustment at half time to take away the slant? It was sick how easy that yardage was in the first half. Did we complete even a single slant in the second half?
The biggest adjustment was to take away Dixon. If you watched, they always had a safety over the top. We needed to find a way to get other receivers open and not force it to Dixon and beat them that way. 2 total catches for TE's. 2 for RB's.

Dixon is going to see a lot of double coverage going forward. He's a beast and will get the ball but Houser is going to have to stop forcing it to him until they're forced to zone or single coverage because others are open.

In fairness, it seems Illinois is slightly ahead of the Broncos.
