With all his scandals and their nature, how has he not become the Tricky Dick of this generation?

They've already been injected into the story by multiple media outlets...

The school was not named in the FBI report. Why feel the need to rush to toss out a boiler plate statement based on the simple reporting that Evans worked under BU for a year? Either stay out of it, or make a substantive statement. This "we are monitoring" middle ground looks defensive, makes it seem like JW felt pressure, but did not want to get caught later having taken the wrong side/backed an incorrect statement.

Statement or no statement. Separate the federal case and Underwood, and what could be NCAA involvement and Underwood. Underwood having worked with Evans will not bring him into the federal investigation unless he was also taking money or directly involved. If/should the NCAA get involved, then I see possible reason to worry with the Underwood Evans connection. Head coach can be held responsible and sanction can follow him to new school.

The NCAA component of this won't come for awhile. They'll obviously be forced to tackle this Louisville piece first, as that's the biggest fish in this whole thing. Then the national attention will shift to Arizona, then probably Pearl and on down the line. Evans and Oklahoma State was the smallest part of this whole thing, the NCAA will be forced to take action on the preceding schools first (if they don't clean house first on their own accord).

Really, we shouldn't be worried about this at all. The likelihood that Underwood was a party to Evans' dealings is so low. Why pay 2 guys on the same staff to do 1 job?

I think your PR 101 class textbook is outdated.

You're right. Innocent people not yet named in an investigation make official comments drawing attention to their potential involvement all the time in legal situations. Makes sense. The prudent advice would never suggest that a potential ancillary target of said investigation be quiet and stay out of it.

See, that's not how it went down, though. It wasn't self-injection into the narrative. Underwood became part of the narrative immediately upon the revelation of charges due to his HC job over Lamont. Thinking otherwise smacks of naiveté.

This. And if you think it's just the Chicago media, you're kidding yourself. For starters, the media in every B1G town is going to get to this if they haven't already. And remember, we're barely 24 hours into a story that's going to dominate the media for months or longer. More names will come out and the people who are associated with those names will be under suspicion. It is what it is and it's not going to go away so brace yourself.

It is the wrong move. Makes it look like they are trying to get out ahead of something negative. Public Relations 101-do not inject yourself into the narrative if you are truly not involved. Also looks panicked and reactionary.

Of course. People are trying to make a case that we should issue a statement because Lamont Evans was one of the candidates for an assistant's position, despite having never been associated as an employee, coach, player, or administrator EVER at UI. A self-admission of guilt, as if you admit you knew of all the improprieties when you tried to hire him. Smart...

Maybe we should issue statements on Derrick Rose cheating on his SAT, Cliff Alexander having dealings with agents, or Corey Maggette receiving payments while in HS as we did recruit all of those too :)

3. They can do what they did. Make a quiet statement acknowledging questions have been asked, that the story is fluid, and that you are monitoring developments. That is called transparency, and that gets my vote.

What is fluid about this story? What further developments have come about? What needed to be monitored? Their statement sounds like they know something, but it is not directly related to yesterday's allegations.

Does he have to remove his Louisville tattoo? Anyone knows?

The whole Lousville staff will probably have to go too. At least 2 of the current assistants are directly caught up in the Bowen thing.

I agree NCAA will come in later. And I actually said in a previous post the same thing on why pay 2 guys on the same staff. I think the only worry for Illinois is when NCAA gets around to Evans, do they hold BU responsible as the head coach on staff. The rules now clearly state that a head coach can't claim "I didn't know that was going on" as an excuse. They also can take punishment on coach at the school he is at currently, not just where the violation took place.

You mean like Pitino and Jurich? Think about it.

Exactly my point. They are not innocent people, they knew it, tried to get out in front of it. Tried to shape the narrative for their purposes BECAUSE THEY WERE INVOLVED. We did the same thing, that is why it was a mistake.

Man, if they do play this year, who would even coach them? Or would the school forfeit the season? Just a wild story.

Interim President Postel won't comment on status of Jurich and Pitino. Says 1 pm presser planned.

They were not named. They were not part of the indictments. They are simply linked to NAMED defendants. Just like BU is linked to a named defendant.

You are not getting me. We responded the same way as Louisville, and you are arguing that said action was the right thing to do? If so, then you must believe we are as culpable as Louisville.

They could get someone like Crean who isn't working, or just grab someone from a small school as a one-year stopgap.

Hardly. The FBI allegations implicated UofL with getting a commitment from a 5 star recruit after Adidas paid him to go there.
