The next time we play I invite everyone to watch our players off the ball when we're on offense. Thats all i did in the last ten minutes of that game. It's eye opening. Groce has no idea what he's doing.

Funny, I did the same thing and came to the same conclusion.

I'm watching MSU against WSU, and what I notice most is how they adjust from the previous game. They learn, and Izzo never stops talking to them on the sideline when they come out. He coaches and teaches in real time so the players can make adjustments during a game. I don't know that I have ever seen Groce do that. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I usually just see him clap and say a quick word as they go to the bench

Honestly - do you think that this is what Groce teaches? I actually don't know and was watching the same thing. They just stand around. I find it hard to believe that this is what he teaches them, but I don't know. We are all in agreement that if this year isn't a good year that Groce is gone - but I am wondering if the players are not going all out as well (coaching obviously influences this).

Good God, that was an awful final 10 minutes. (Not that the rest of the game was great, either)

Not only do we have no offensive flow and a terrible defense, but JG is coaching dumber than rocks.

Best players on the team:
- Lucas
- JCL
- Hill
- Black
- Thorne

ONLY TWO OF WHICH STARTED!

What the crap was he thinking with that zone, too?! They were eating it for lunch and he refused to stop using it.

Dumber...than...rocks.

How many times can our deep wings in the 2 - 3 stand and watch while their weak side guys sneak in for dunks and rebounds?

Such a huge recruit for Lou at the time, along with Audie Mathews. Neither was a great payer, but they got the Lou bus rolling recruiting wise.

Yeah...it started the Chicago connection. Imagine what Lou could be able to do with this year's team vs Groce?

Which sucks because he's one of the few guys with athleticism on the team. No reason for him not to play today. NONE. :tsk:

Look at black and tejons stat line. They also passed the eye test. Get them the ball!

TJL and Black absolutely a bright spot.
At this time of year I often ask myself so...
I think three things the Illini will be at on feb 1 than dec 1 is ??

(Mainly because I don't want to think about the dozens of things that are unlikely to get better.)

This year two of those things are
- point guard play will be better on Feb 1 because TJL will be playing more.
- rebounding and put back points will be better on Feb 1 because Black will be playing more
After that......not sure what I got. Maybe..Thorne will get more comfortable?

Unfortunately way more things that are unlikely to get better and we will still struggle a lot.

When you have me,a lowly medical student, never played competitive basketball... telling this board who should be playing ... and then Groce after game says "hind sight is 20/20" something is wrong.

With the game on the line, I'd honestly trust the ball more in TJL's hands than Hill, Abrams, or anyone else. He can penetrate, hit a three, has a beautiful floater, and is smart enough to pass the ball when nothing's available.

I did an analysis of how much TJL dribbles the ball every time he gets it vs how much Tate does.

It really wasn't that different as TJL dribbles on average 9.9 seconds when he gets the ball and Tate averages 10.45. This includes bringing the ball up the court as well as any time the ball came to them in the offense. I think if I did it again I would only include them initiating the offense.

Some takeaways: It's not so much the player as it is the offense. TA would take forever to initiate it as well. Groce allows for 1/3 or more of the shot clock to be gone before the offense starts plus all the dribbling allows defenses to get set. We don't move the ball and then have to rush shots or take bad shots.

Now, the reason the offense seems to flow with TJL in is because TJL is the PG Groce has been looking for. (Frazier is as well) Tate passed the ball on 9 of 11 times he had the ball. The other two (that I saw anyway) were an assist and a T/O. TJL on the other hand passed on 11 of 18 times he had the ball. He shot the ball 5 times (made 3), got an assist and was fouled shooting on the rest.

That ability to create is what makes the offense have to guard you and opens things up for other players. Tate doesn't have that and shouldn't see any meaningful minutes for the rest of the season.

Silver lining...Kipper suits up in a couple weeks :thumb:

The state of things is such that I'm left hoping irrationally he'll turn out to be the obscure 3-star recruit that explodes in college and becomes a lotto talent. It happens at other schools from time to time.

+1....the offense just flows better with TJL.

Interesting, can you also explain what Groce's "offense" is? :)

:)

But we're Illinois, so from time to time doesn't really apply.

Hopefully not. Groce will be gone at the end of this season, and DJ can start over with a new coach, and not have to sit out a year.

How much Xanax do you take when Tate dribbles vs TJL?
