Honestly, I think like a lot of formerly iconic programs, USC is doing everything they can to undo their legacy. I think it's hilarious that programs think they can just hire a coach and find instant success.

Maybe Lovie's program isn't where we want it to be, but I think the carousel is getting laughable and coaches getting canned because they couldn't beat a powerhouse is just sad.

I'm of the opinion that many on this board would start firing a coach after 1 loss in the first season... That's how bad the attitude is here...

I have no issue with successful high school coaches coming on as position coaches/recruiters like Patterson. However, straight to a coordinator is too much of a stretch IMO and the suggestion that a guy like Holecek would go straight to head coach is absolutely laughable. I don’t care how good of a coach he is, it’s a different world.

I’ve heard some rumors that we are eyeing some HS coaches to come on in some capacity. Holecek and Derek Leonard to name two. I doubt Leonard leaves Rochester, but he knows his stuff.

If Kliff and Fedora couldn't cut it at UNC or TTU it's laughable to think they'd just turn Illinois around in a snap.

Any defensive guys in the job market due to recent firings?

Mark D'Onofrio former Houston, Temple and the U DC. Not great imo

I'm starting to have doubts about Hoke coming here. He will be 62 in January and has spent 14 of the last 15 years in pro ball. Lovie seemed to have someone in mind though and he seemed fairly confident about it.

I think Helton is gone. He needed to win the Notre Dame game

Helton is back, per USC AD Lynn Swann.

A lot of speculation about USC targeting James Franklin, but probably mostly journalist-driven smoke without any fire. I don't think Helton will ever get USC back to glory, but it's tough to fire a guy after only one poor year after starting his tenure with 11 and 10 wins. JT Daniels is going to be a stud at QB in the coming years, and that USC roster is pretty young.

Here's an interesting rumor. Mack Brown coming out of retirement to go back to UNC. Would be a big mistake, IMO. They need to hire Satterfield from App State and be done with it.

Satterfield has really made that App State team into a contender. Reminds me of Brohm at WKU. I like that offense he runs as well.

Any movement on that Charlotte HC opening? I hear guys are lining up for the job. The Idea I guess is that its a new program with no baggage; good facilities.

My bet is on Bob Babich for Defensive Coordinator. Currently Buffalo Bills LB coach. He was the defensive coordinator for Lovie in Chicago from 2007-2009 and was demoted from calling plays after the 2009 season. Stayed on as DC and LBs coach until Lovie was fired. Head coach at NDST from 1997-2002.

Looks like Mack Brown to UNC is close to a done deal: https://www.newsobserver.com/sports/article222176520.html

Not if he brings in Chizik as DC and Kingsbury as OC.

Guessing Kliff's agent starts the bidding at $1.6 million to be OC and may reach $2 million before he signs a contract. I also wouldn't be in a rush because he'll have serious interest from NFL teams too.

Good call. I could definitely see this. Wouldn't be the worst we could do either (I'd take him over Hoke). One thing I do know is it's not going to Ron Rivera LOL.

I’m not sure we need another NFL guy as DC.
We need someone with deep ties to good HS Hooli programs that’s a great recruiter. Most NFL guys have been away from the college game for to long.
There is a big difference between coaching grown men that are paid to play and young immature college athletes.

A welcome reminder that this really isn't all that hard.
It is interesting to me that Brown is 67 years old. I know that most do not view Lovie as a long term solution here regardless of future success or failure, but if he only coached until Brown's current age, he would be here 7 more years.

I agree with you. Would much rather have a proven college DC like a Koenning of course. Just saying we could do worse. Hopefully Lovie realizes he needs more good recruiters.

Just a completely random thought, but if Lovie has good connections with Jon Hoke, maybe he'd consider Brady Hoke? Not saying I'd suggest or want it, and he has all of one season as DC experience, but he at least has a ton of college experience and I believe has been considered a pretty good recruiter. Would much rather bring in a proven college DC, but based on Lovie's comments, it sure seems like it's gonna be someone that will continue running the Lovie defense.

Other random thoughts: I kind of hope to see some staff turnover. There's 2 defensive openings, hopefully the non-DC spot is a good recruiter. Also, I wouldn't be surprised if Byrd or Clark are replaced, and they revamp the entire defensive staff. With the rest of the staff, I doubt this happens but I'd like to see Ligs cut loose, move Patterson to special teams, and hire a QB coach to work directly under Rod Smith. My ideal candidate would be Nate. Let him learn first hand under Rod, QB coach would be a promotion over RB coach, and hopefully improve the local recruiting. Just some random Monday thoughts.

David Gibbs out of Texas Tech became available after Kingsbury was fired. Has spent a lot of time between the NFL and the college game. Has had stops as a d-coordinator at Texas Tech, Houston, Auburn, and Minnesota. Haven't looked up his defensive stats at Tech, but did do some digging and was he is highly regarded with the Texas Tech fan base. Some folks on twitter want to see him stay or even get moved up to head coach and have him bring in someone to run the offense. Definitely has some experience game planning against the high powered offenses that we are seeing more and more of in the Big Ten.

Might be a good guy for Lovie to look at with his resume and the fact that he has been coaching/recruiting in Texas the past 6 seasons or so.

Spurrier evidently like Hoke to run his defenses. Pretty good indication he’s qualified.

I pretty much agree with you. However, I had seen that Lovie knows who he is going to hire, he has NFL background with some college experience, and Lovie isn't going to overhaul his system. Connecting the dots Babich fits those criteria.

I thought that too but after re-reading the quote I kinda wonder if Lovie was trolling the media there. Like saying yeah, I have one person in mind, ME!

I think it may have been more tongue in cheek since all the candidates are still likely employed currently

I follow Texas Tech, and we don't want Gibbs...his D was better than the previous 4 DC's at Tech, but there was not much to compare to.

My thought was Perry Fewell. He's coaching secondary for the Jaguars and the job security there is fairly suspect at this point in their season.
Or Steve Wilks...his job security is certainly in question in Arizona and he has a history with Lovie.
