I mean never say never but that is the plan in place for UNC.I was really getting my hopes up about the possibility of Chizik here as DC...blah

I will say, as different as it may be to hire a near 70 year old HC, I like the idea of hiring an entire staff, or at least getting as close to that as possible, instead of getting the HC and then seeing what pieces he hires.I mean never say never but that is the plan in place for UNC.
I would assume that if we bring in a strong DC he would have a lot to about who would be directly under him on the defensive side. After all a lot of his job performance will be about how all of the defense preforms.Just a completely random thought, but if Lovie has good connections with Jon Hoke, maybe he'd consider Brady Hoke? Not saying I'd suggest or want it, and he has all of one season as DC experience, but he at least has a ton of college experience and I believe has been considered a pretty good recruiter. Would much rather bring in a proven college DC, but based on Lovie's comments, it sure seems like it's gonna be someone that will continue running the Lovie defense.
Other random thoughts: I kind of hope to see some staff turnover. There's 2 defensive openings, hopefully the non-DC spot is a good recruiter. Also, I wouldn't be surprised if Byrd or Clark are replaced, and they revamp the entire defensive staff. With the rest of the staff, I doubt this happens but I'd like to see Ligs cut loose, move Patterson to special teams, and hire a QB coach to work directly under Rod Smith. My ideal candidate would be Nate. Let him learn first hand under Rod, QB coach would be a promotion over RB coach, and hopefully improve the local recruiting. Just some random Monday thoughts.
Clark and Byrd aint going anywhere. There is even some thought that Byrd might be promoted to DC....Just a completely random thought, but if Lovie has good connections with Jon Hoke, maybe he'd consider Brady Hoke? I can live with the first sentence. I can't get behind the 2nd. Why would he have not been made interim DC when Hardy resigned? Byrd has never coached in college until this year, and has no coordinator experience. I can't believe Whitman would give Lovie the extension if he had no plans of finding a quality DC.Clark and Byrd aint going anywhere. There is even some thought that Byrd might be promoted to DC....
I completely agree with the first part. The part about Coach Clark... ehI would assume that if we bring in a strong DC he would have a lot to about who would be directly under him on the defensive side. After all a lot of his job performance will be about how all of the defense preforms.
Based on how the DLine looked this year I think Coach Clark next job will be elsewhere.
I am 100% with ya...doubt it happens but its been entertained.I can live with the first sentence. I can't get behind the 2nd. Why would he have not been made interim DC when Hardy resigned? Calvin Avery was a true freshman.I completely agree with the first part. The part about Coach Clark... eh
Bobby took a leap forward in just his sophomore year, and Calvin was just a true sophomore. I don't think one year is near enough time to see what his value is.
With regards to stability. This extension means nothing if:
1. Rod Smith is not retained
2. A good DC hire is not made
3. Other upgrades are not made to the coaching staff
4. We see significant transfers out
this recent season wasn't going to be very good no matter what
I think Lovie knew Clark needed to learn on the job and accepted that given this recent season wasn't going to be very good no matter what. So, hopefully Clark did learn, brings in a few recruits, and helps us become a bowl eligible team this coming year.
Correct, that was a brain fartCalvin Avery was a true freshman.

I have heard the extension was made because of specific aspects of 2, 3, 4, 5 and rumors are that we have some surprises coming our way.
Texas Tech ranked #110. Pass.David Gibbs out of Texas Tech became available after Kingsbury was fired. Has spent a lot of time between the NFL and the college game. Has had stops as a d-coordinator at Texas Tech, Houston, Auburn, and Minnesota. Haven't looked up his defensive stats at Tech, but did do some digging and was he is highly regarded with the Texas Tech fan base. Some folks on twitter want to see him stay or even get moved up to head coach and have him bring in someone to run the offense. Definitely has some experience game planning against the high powered offenses that we are seeing more and more of in the Big Ten.
Might be a good guy for Lovie to look at with his resume and the fact that he has been coaching/recruiting in Texas the past 6 seasons or so.
Seconded.Like good surprises or bad surprises?
If they're bad I may just need to check out now lol
Mack Brown was washed up 6 years ago. A mediocre broadcasting career isn't reviving whatever he had in the 90's and 2000's. He made a name for himself at UNC, but UNC trying to recapture 80's magic is only a step up from hiring a dofus outta Toledo.I can't get over how dumb this Mack Brown thing is.
