The time frame for naming a DC is very troubling.
Team after team has named assistant coaches and here we sit with nothing. Lovie better have a exceptional name in mind or everyone will be disappointed.
This has gone on way, way too long.

I think we go into the fall a couple of coaches down. Like the fans, no one is interested unless we make a bowl game this year.

Although I wouldn't go so extreme as this, I definitely think that we are having challenges filling the role with someone that fits the bill

It’s 100% clear we’re having major issues filling the DC role. Being handed a 100+ ranked unit, with no control and no stability is a brutal sell no matter how much money you throw at it (and we aren’t throwing near as much money as people think).

Your vision is lots better than mine.

Coaching is not a profession for anybody valuing job stability. If you do well you move up, if not you move out. I'll bet there are MANY young up and coming coaches that would love to have a year as Lovie Smith's defensive coordinator on their resume.

I admit I have absolutely no inside information. Where at I wrong? I just use all the evidence around. Having a coordinator position open for 100 days and another assistant position open even longer sure gives the appearance of lack of interest. Also, all the new hires last year were for first timers for those positions, hardly high salary guys. The ranking of the defense, job stability, and play calling and scheme control are all facts or near certainties.

Everything you stated about the defense is true. But the chance to have a D1 coordinator title/job isn’t available all that often so there will be plenty of people interested in it. Also we have some money available to attract guys you think of Nate picks up the call and wants to come back we aren’t going to up his current salary significantly? Also Lovie just isn’t in a hurry to hire anyone he is telling recruits everything they need to know about the process and who the next coaches might be. Heck he may have hired someone from within too. I hope not but it’s a possibility.

So I guess we just have different ideas on how a hiring timeline should go. I’m assuming Lovie has been interviewing candidates, as the season has been over for 2 months, and 1 month for bowl teams. If he has, then obviously he has yet to find someone to accept the job. If he hadn’t been interviewing, well then it’s systemic and a very weird strategy. Both options would seem to be “not ideal” and point to some issues.
I agree with you that it shouldn’t take this long haha. But Lovie doesn’t really care what we think. But yes he has conducted some interviews and stuff of that nature.

I really appreciate your info. Awesome that you share it. Has he not offered the job to anyone yet? That would be as concerning as being turned down. Unless the interviews you’re referencing are Gil Byrd and Miles Smith.

The thing about such a tightly sealed program is that no one has any idea what is going on except those within the program. Given the recruiting push that was originally made to close out the class, I wasn't shocked by a long wait. I am sure that Whitman knows the situation and has been providing his input. So, ultimately, I am not too concerned. I just wish that information leaked more consistently and reliably because at this point, I just want to hear something. I keep hearing rumblings of a coaching hire, but then I can't find any information anywhere.

I don’t even care what gets leaked or not. It’s better for the program that there are no leaks. I care about tomorrow being February, our last game being in November, and somehow we still haven’t hired a DC, let alone 2 other assistants. I’m sure when the announcement eventually does come, Whitman and Lovie will talk about doing a very thorough search and being able to find the perfect match for the job. I just know I’m not gonna be buying that at all.

I guess it all depends if the quality of the hires seems to justify the wait, which considering the recruiting successes I feel there has to be some weight to my feelings.

Haha yeah. Illinois could hire Saban as DC and people would say, "but it took too long!!" /s

IMO, this is a bit of an overreaction. Lovie Smith needs to win more games. He knows that. If we get a good dc, or not, won’t change what has to happen this year and then again the following year. This is Lovie a team, and he is coming to the end of his contract. So, at this point, let the process play out.

I thought Whitman extended his contract.

I believe Lovie was enticed to take the job with a promise that he would have the time and resources necessary to succeed. I'm guessing that Josh's pitch to Lovie was basically, "Build your legacy here. Show the world that the Lovie way to football is a winning way to football." A place where he can make all the decisions and build the program the right way.

Lovie 100% understands that some of his hires were not able to execute his vision, and now there isn't time to get staff wrong again. A failure at DC is the end of the Lovie Football Legacy dream.

So why is it taking so long? I suspect it's because Lovie wants his new DC to be the best possible fit for the challenge and conditions. And given how successful and non-traditional the recruiting season has been, I'm perfectly okay with Lovie taking a non-traditional approach to these hires, too. He may want the DC on board before pulling the trigger for hiring the position coaches, too, to ensure they're all on the same sheet.

In Lovie I (continue to) trust. <Crosses fingers>

Now that Julius Peppers is retiring we are obviously going to get him and Peanut Tillman as assistants.............I know we all love that former player angle :)
