Former Illini in College Hoops

Possible solution to college basketball. Superpowers and major conferences agree to rules along with NCAA. NCAA owns the NCAA tournament and I believe the NIT as well.

Superconferences and major conferences could possibly have their own tournament and invite the good teams from weaker conferences as needed.

But I think most would want the NCAA tournament in the current format. Conference winners+40 at large teams.

I dunno. With the money grab the way it is, nothings off the table imo. If the super conferences think they can grab 75% of the revenue on their own they will bolt. It all depends on the TV money being offered. Ultimately they control the cash flow and will dictate what they want to happen. Maybe they like it the way it is. Football is a different animal because the underdogs don’t have the opportunity they do in basketball. I certainly hope it stays like it is.

They will adjust. One way is back loaded NIL contracts. Make offers that pay well if they stay all 4 years (w/exceptions for those who go pro early). Care will be required for those who don't make the grade and are "encouraged to go elsewhere".
Or 2-3.

Judge invalidated the NCAA's rule on sitting a year for two-time transfers. Many here see this as another step towards the end of the NCAA altogether. Can they govern anything at this point, and can anything they do be construed as a restraint on the player's ability to earn a living?

And what are the limits on player movement now - again some are foreseeing mid-year transfers if a player gets a better NIL offer, or if his/her current team stinks. Would have seemed unthinkable a few years ago but now, who knows?

Higher rated recruits will demand more upfront/guarantees and this will have a trickle down effect through the system. Same as any arm's race.

The true point of no return will be that players won't even need to actually be enrolled as students in the University as it will be left up to the university themselves to determine who is eligible to represent the University on their athletic teams and they can use contracted employees if they wish. Think the UNC sham classes without any pretenses.

I kinda like the idea, which does not originate with me, of there being BAs in Basketball (or whatever sport).

Cynics might say that makes a mockery of tertiary education, but it needn't. I mean, it's still education -- into not only the pick-and-roll, boxing out, and zone defenses, but potentially all the other things related to the game.

For the 99.9% of CBB athletes who have no possibility of going pro, I would think they would have interest in the principles of things like refereeing, sports agent-ing, sneaker design, conditioning, mentoring youth players, etc. etc.

For me, there still has to be some connection to the university and some form of educational attainment required.

It may be worth paying a 5 star FR. After that, I suspect the way to win is to be the poacher. Don't spend money on FR. Save the NIL for proven transfer players. Don't spend NIL on anyone who doesn't play at least 5m/game (i.e. players 9-13 on most teams).

Sigh. That ends up sounding awful close to how to build an NBA roster. (Drafted players that are home grown are cheap, so effectively no NIL.)

Pretty sure that is exactly what Underwood is doing. Notice the recruiting class for next year. Morez (5ish stars) and 2 guys who need a year to develop that aren’t likely receiving NIL as freshmen. If they develop and stay, great. If they move on, only cost us a scholly.

Curbelo and Miller playing for their third teams as part of the court ruling. To think they were playing as Freshmen on a 1 seed. To put it bluntly, what a waste. Good luck to both.
