ASSUMING WE WIN...................
What would have made this an even more impressive trouncing of the Cornhuskers is this. BTN pregame, I walked away to grab lunch while the crew was discussing black coaches in the NCAA. It was a very serious topic, of course, and they had numerous stats to show how minority coaches are often fired too early and seldom receive a legitimate 2nd chance in the coaching ranks. Mike Locksley was one of 4 exceptions to this, btw.
I walked back into the room and saw Howard Griffith giving a sermon to the other studio hosts, with veins popping from his neck. As I sat down to rewind and find out what specific topic had him so riled up, I heard Howard say (paraphrasing), "He's a great leader of men. People should give him a fair shot, and not judge him based on a relatively small sample size! Instead, judge the man based on his full career track record."
As I clicked PLAY, I thought wow, the former Illini great is standing up for the current Illini head coach. Impressive!! Way to go Howard!!! Give Lovie some love/respect on a national stage!
I then learned during the rewind he was talking instead about James Franklin of Penn State! So much for ruining the moment. And this victory could have provided a nice stamp of confirmation on Howard's otherwise eloquent comments!
Missed opportunity maybe.....
