For sure. Theirs was the optimistic one.

Being down by four scores to the 2nd worst team in the conference was unintentionally accurate.

At the college level, a team that isn't clicking is less than the sum of its parts. Trying to predict this game by comparing stats, strengths, or defense vs. offense was a fool's errand because reasonable performance expectations are gone, completely replaced by head games. Unlike at lower levels, individual performances are unlikely to make a dent. When a team really sucks, there is no floor.

It’s a good thing I like spending time with my wife. The season tickets, the gas, the hotel… Perhaps we should have done something else with our retirements.

We’re all very disappointed in what we’re seeing but I do have faith in Bret. Rebuilding Illinois, like life, is not a straightline upward trajectory. Obviously this year is a step back.

It’s one thing to lose. It’s another thing to get completely embarrassed by a first year coach. Afraid of the impact this could have going forward.

Yeah, this is a devastating loss. It’s not one we’re likely to bounce back from this season. It’s going to be a long painful season, and then we need to somehow be successful in the transfer portal.
