As much as I like Luke Goode and his dependable shooting, when he is in with Domask, the defensive intensity is too lax to be effective...especially with a team like Oakland. Q and DD seemed to provide a problem that Oakland could not figure out. Illini need to be more aggressive with taking 12 footers with rebounders in position...and passed that up a half dz. times. Like the ball movement but would love to see CoHawk forget about feeding the offside wing under the hoop when he is covered like a glove...it has not worked for him in his career yet.

Oakland is a good and well-coached team. Our guys will be lucky to win. Defense is not an Illini strength as it seems so far and Oakland knows how to score. Fortunately, they cooled off some but as long as the game is close, it will be won between the ears.

Thank goodness we have this level of competition (aside from Marquette) early in the season because we lack chemistry, offensive flow and our shooting in all areas is horrific!

Something about putting on the Illinois jersey eliminates any given players ability to hit a free throw. It’s even a thing for transfers who shot perfectly fine at their previous stops. It’s insane. Brad pissed off whichever basketball god is responsible for this.

We are never gonna be a team that creams cupcakes unless they are in Kenpom 300+ range. On the other side maybe Oakland is just pretty good. They gave Ohio state a scare

We do not look dialed in at all mentally. Some good individual efforts on defense, and a couple nifty plays by TJ, combined with IDWTFIAW on offense. Ball movement is good at times and then 5-6 minutes of the ball sticking just long enough to cost us decent looks.
And the free throw shooting is just hot garbage.
Also, did anyone but the Krush show up tonight? SFC looks empty.

On the plus side, we're taking fewer threes. On the minus, we're 0-6. We're also, of course, 4-10 from the free-throw line. Nothing about that half was particularly good. I wasn't expecting this much hesitancy from a team with this much experience, especially after what we saw against Kansas.
I think the worrying thing about the threes is that 5 of those 6 were wide open. Our percentage on wide open threes thus far this season is extremely low, which is rather scary. Yes it's 2 games, but Ottawa and Spain weren't exactly inspiring either.

We didn't actually land a legit shooter. Our transfers are a bunch of okay shooters.
Our best two shooters are Goode (best) and Domask (2nd best). They are a combined 0-1 on 3s tonight, and 0-2 on all FGs tonight. So not good, but they haven't shot much.

since the Kansas preseason game where we went to the basket continually I ha ve been less than enthusiastic with our play. Whether it's coaching or ability or both , we do not look like a top 25 team. It's early but this will not cut it with the schedule we have. How about those free throws?

If we are in the bonus then I don't see how Ty can be handling the ball or on the floor. If we are in the bonus I would prefer Domask to do so and be more assertive. He plays pretty solid x should hit his FTs.

Oakland is projected to be a Quad 4 team. They might wind up being significantly better than that, but that's where they are projected. Marquette will be a very significant step up

You just made a big part of my point for me. If you have a real shooter, they find a way to get their shots (and make them).

Two games into the season and I am thinking we will be a better team next year without CH.

Instead of being a matchup nightmare for the OTHER team, he is a matchup problem for his own team.
I’ll openly recognize this is an unfair comment from my recliner, but I do wonder if CH’s play game to game reflects the visibility of the game. Meaning BIG+ streaming games aren’t motivating enough to give a winning effort.

Hitting 33% of our threes would be as valuable as hitting 100% of our FTs in that half.
