Haven’t been following closely thIs year. This thread was fun to read through. Thanks for the updates

No worries. Thought about doing a separate thread for the Gold Cup but at this point just having this thread is good enough based on how much reaction we get to it.

There's still more soccer to watch though involving the U.S. this summer. The women's team begins play in the FIFA Women's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand next Friday night against Vietnam with two of the 3 group stage matches airing in primetime (the third airs at 2:00 AM CT)

Any insight on why this particular roster was picked for the Gold Cup compared to the roster that we fielded for Nations League?

Haven't seen much discussion, but I thought Turner was at fault for both of the extra time goals in the last two games (Canada and Panama). The one against Canada took a bit of a deflection, but he still shouldn't have been beaten from that distance. Last night's was just a bone-head mistake. You can't come for that ball unless you are sure you are gonna get there before the attacker.

Still can’t believe they decide these games with these ridiculous penalty kicks. So stupid. The most idiotic thing in sports. It’s like putting a pitcher 30 feet from a batter in baseball. I know there is no way you have time react, so you’ll have to just guess where the pitch is going to go. Good luck!

Could anything be less satisfying than watching these amazing athletes compete for 120 minutes and then watch a goalie dive wildly to one side while a player literally rolls the ball in the middle of the goal.

Back the dot up 10 feet or 20 feet and make it a fair contest.

That is a bit harsh. Miazga invited the shot by dropping and the Canadian stuck the ball well. Deflection of not I don’t think Turner could have been expected to save that shot. Last night the right back and right center back did not hold the line and kept the player onside. Then Robinson did not come across but instead tracked the other attacker for some reason. He should have slide across to try and stop the guy with the ball.

imo, doesn't seem so bad when it comes to elimination matches. does seem pretty bad when a soft penalty is given.

KBLEE => spurs supporter
Turner => employed by Arsenal

Most of the top European players on the USMNT roster had to head back overseas to start prepping for pre-season training with their club teams (Premier League for example starts about a month from now). That, coupled with the compressed schedule that they had due to the World Cup last November meant that those players honestly just needed a little bit of a break. Turner stayed in the states since he's not the starting keeper for Arsenal.

The way the commentators of the game made it sound it seemed like it was a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" type situation. Turner probably could have taken the Panama player out on that play and gotten a red card but because it was outside the box, they wouldn't have been awarded a PK.

It's nice to be wanted by a PL club, but not getting regular starts is going to be to his detriment. Playing in random FA / EFL Cup matches is not enough to keep a player sharp.
