This thread is getting really annoying... make one about bars and get off this one please! Be considerate of the people who choose the recruiting thread to discuss the new recruiting news.

Used to make the ice cream drinks at Eddie's, then sneak up the back stairs of Mabel's to catch the band's last set (or at least a song or two). What was the bar called across from Katsinas? Used to see Pork and the Havana Ducks there.

Not sure about latter, but in my day it was Panama Red's I'm pretty sure.

Anybody here old enough to remember Bidwell's? It closed at the end my 1st semester freshman year and there were lots of tributes. I guess it was kind of legendary. On Wright, just north of Green. Replaced by Whitt's End.

Yep. It's been gone for well over a decade now.

Figured as much. That was mainly for the lol effect. Spent a lot of time and dough there. Not sure which was better: the music selection or the chicks. RIP.

Boni's and Red Lion ceased during my stretch (77-81). Can someone fill me in on when Treno's and Round Robin went under? Loved Treno's. RR was just another bar. The Rave (band) @ Red Lion provided a lot of blurred highlights. Little King Nights at Cochrane's were the bomb. Transitioned to Murphy's my upperclass years. Oh, yeah...Mabel's. Opened a couple of years in. Pretty popular. Went there a lot. What happened?

I was R&R on Friday afternoon for Happy Hour, Cochrane's, Skylight (for the one year it was open), Murphy's at the end of my three years there, Deluxe for fish on Fridays. Some Illini Inn for mug club. Some Chin's for volcanoes and Eddie's for ice cream drinks. EDIT: Mabel's as well. Loved a band called Modern Humans. Check my avatar!

One time at Skylight, a friend and I walked in about 11 pm or so and there were 5 people deep at the bar, all around the bar. He was a bit bummed that it would take too long to get a beer. "Hold on", I said and took out a huge 1 dollar cigar that I promptly lit up. It was a like a parting of the Red Sea. That cigar smelled so bad and tasted worse... but we got to stand right at the bar. :D

I had a Spanish class that the TA had us meet every Friday at Trenos. Had to speak only Spanish during the class time there. It became progressively easier the more pitchers of beer we had.

Little Kings night.....3/$1.25. I remember when we broke the record for cases served in a night....beating a bar at tOSU which was 650 cases. I think Cochran’s served over 1000 cases. Many brain cells ago...

They also did a 3-2-1 night where you would get 3 bottles of Old Milwaukee, 2 bottles of MDG or 1 bottle of Heinekin for $1.50.

Went to summer school 1979 and it was the BEST as far as the bars went. It seemed like every bar near campus had some sort of food and drink special. They staggered nights so it ended up that you could subsist on very little money. Round Robin had nickel hot dogs, White Horse had some sort of special and someplace had quarter slices of pizza (I don't remember where). Oh, and the drinks that went with the food were cheap too!

Wow. Four pages in and no mention of Stan's? Couple doors down from Kam's. Frat rat bar pretty much, but I spent a good bit of time and money there.

Yes! '79 summer was my only summer school. 2 300 level CS/EE/Math classes, so that kinda sucked, but the bar scene in the summer was great. Thanks for reminding me.

My only summer school also. Organic Chem, matrix algebra and economic history. Had to have bar time to recover from those classes.

There was a semester somewhere in 1986 or 1987 where I spent more time in R&R than I did in classrooms (I actually tracked it for a while). I'm guessing it was around the time they started serving lunch, so show up around noon, stay til I needed to be somewhere else, then come back later in the evening and close the place.

My GPA confirms this.

And
This board is truly an amazing group. In about a week we have gone from complete despair with no hope for the program to a position where we may need to decide which two Five Star wings we will have to turn down. All this with a tour of every sleezy college bar in the Midwest thrown in too.

I just got into town, and you degens (total joke) convinced me to take a stroll down memory lane. At Murphy’s right now...many thanks!

Last time I was in town, took a stroll around campus then made my way to Murphy’s for a burger and beers.

Went to Stan’s with my dad for Dad’s Day, fall of ‘70. Played the pins for hours...

We called them "the dings". Had a frat brother who was a junior who suddenly started playing the dings at Dooleys most of the day, every day. Left school at the end of the semester. Guess he'd had enough. Moved to Texas, got married and went to work. Has done quite well.

Reported location at the corner of 1st and green where the dominos is... Hard pass. Truly a shame for students, but this move probably brings in an older crowd.
