One mistake does not define Illini's Black

The university works with my school and brings athletes in to work with or talk to our kids throughout the year. Leron started working with the kids, fell in love with them and couldn’t get enough," Meyers said. "I don’t condone what he (Black) did.

"I’ve met a lot of athletes over the years, but none like him. He was required to do his 25 hours and did them rather quickly, then Leron just kept coming back. At one time we totaled his hours -- he was at 175. He would contact me frequently and ask to come visit the kids even when he was done if he didn’t have class or study hall.”

“Leron knew he messed up; he would be the first to tell you he was going to right his wrong. I remember a conversation where he flat out told me he has strong faith and would make it through this, but felt awful for what he put his family and teammates through,” Meyers said.

Really like Leron - my impression has always been he has a good heart - just made a bad decision.

Ditto. Hopefully, in addition to learning lessons from this incident off the court, it helps him on the court too. Needs to control that aggression. I think he'll get there sooner than later.

I agree. Making the tournament would be a massive jump in year over year performance. Not to mention we are losing are 2nd best player on the team. Unless Abrams comes back as an All B10 caliber PG, I see us struggling in conference play as we have done the last 3 years.

Tracy will do just fine - we all need to remember the intangibles with TA - most of which are in the gut, not the leg.

Sadly, we also need to remember that TA wasn't All B1G to begin with, and that many, many posters here complained about his play-making ability....
Plus, he has now sustained not 1, but 2, back to back serious injuries and hasn't played in competition for 2 1/2 years...

I don't doubt his heart or his guts, and I know he bleeds O & B, and that he will try his best to help the team all he can.... it's the 'all he can' that worries me... jmho

I'm with you on this. Tracy was a competent PG (but not much better than that) before his two major injuries. If he can somehow be competent this year, we should be a solid team. But that's hardly a given after what he's been through.

I've said it before, but it's worth repeating: the ACL should be a non-issue, but the achilles tear is a huge concern. There are damning statistics you can easily google that demonstrate how hard it is to come back from that injury. True shooting percentage, usage rate, and most other efficiency and effectiveness based metrics tend to TANK after an achilles rupture. Tracy was already an inefficient player whose primary asset was his ability to attack the basket. To expect him to play at a level comparable to his soph/jr seasons is likely wishful thinking.

Of course, we're all hoping he recovers better than most from the injury and makes up for inevitable lost athleticism with an improved jump shot and BBIQ. It could happen, but it would make him a major outlier. I'm keeping expectations low and hopes high.

Abrams looked pretty darn good last Saturday.

Derek Piper on Tay and Jay today was asked to rank the young wings 1-3.

1. Nichols-- liked his defense and physical play. Plus he can score a bit.

2. Williams-- expect him to make a jump this year

3. Jordan-- needs to shoot it better this year and improve his defense

I guess we need to ask ourselves what evidence is more relevant. The practice reports and scrimmage observations, or the studies on ruptured Achilles typically from old NBA players that are well past their prime when they return to play..

Just fine did not mean all big ten, but he was responsible for more than a few close wins and this team needs a leader with his tenacity. The tenor of this team over the last few years has been soft imo and 2 more years of maturity can only help. I think most complained about the play making, true, but his D was very good and we've missed having a point who could disrupt the other teams O. I have been more concerned about the D and grit of this team over the last few years. I think he'll be fine.

but you forgot about studies done on high school and college level athletes, conducted in the last 10 years...

I haven't seen such a study but I'd like to check it out if you want to post a link. You hardly hear about high school and college athletes with that kind of injury so I'd be really curious to see what they found.

I really liked the glimpses of strong play by Williams last year - showed some flashes of what he is capable of given more PT.

I would agree with this although I'd say Nichols can score more than just "a bit". DJ Williams looks to have made the jump and Jordan did seem off.

I really hope AJ can flip the switch and get his shot to fall. He was inconsistent last year and at the scrimmage. Hopefully the scrimmage was just an off day.

I was impressed with Pickett at the scrimmage more than Damonte Williams and that is saying a lot since I thought Damonte looked pretty darn good.

I thought that DJW looked like the best athlete on the court anytime he was on the court...not the best player but just a freak athlete.

I think AJ was trying too hard and thinking too much. Just needs to let it flow.

I think back when Abrams was playing before, we didn't have much in the way of outside shooters. Tracy and Ray Rice were slashers, so we'd see lots of teams pack the lane. Now that we have some guys who can make outside shots, I would hope the lane is a bit more open for Tracy to drive and dish (the latter wasn't his forte previously though)

There's a Wes Matthews for every Kobe you speak of.

....AND, we didn't have a 5 that knew where to be when the slasher hit the lane. Having someone like MT with a higher BB IQ will help with dumps and spacing.

I agree. The inside-out and outside-in looks should be as good as they've ever been. I also really enjoy when basic stuff works. A high pick and roll with Malcolm or JCL filling in behind should work wonders this year.

Saw today that Lindy's preview mentioned Malcolm Hill as a "potential B10 POY", and then went on to leave him off of their Top 25 Small Forwards list (and all of the other lists, in case you wondered if maybe they consider him a SG or PF). They also listed him as Third Team All-B10. No respect at all.
