I'd be curious to know why JG would draw up plays for players he didn't have (at the time he drew up the play)?

I just got word today that Darius Paul is at Robert Morris. The NAIA one. Crazy.
He drew up plays that work. Lesser players aren't successful as often as better players. Percentage of success is lower. Fans remember the unsuccessful ones.
It's really pretty simple. You have to have players to be successful at a high rate.
The only good thing about last year is that players got court time who will make up our bench this year. That should make us better, especially since several of those were very young.
I certainly agree that you have to have players to be successful... I'm guessing by your answer that you didn't really understand why I was curious...
So I am still curious why JG (or any coach), who should know who is current players are, and should know their capabilities, would draw up a play that only better players had a chance of success at completing... I mean... Why not draw up a play that fit the players you have at hand ? ?
(display amazement and sarcasm simultaneously)....
You're still missing the point.
Or mayyybeeee, some of you aren't getting his point.

Offensively, we should be good. But I'm more concerned about our defense. That has to really improve. Here are my way-too-early scoring predictions for the season:
17 Hill
12 JCL
9 Thorne
8 Black
6 Finke
6 Morgan
5 AJ
5 Abrams
4 DJW
3 Lucas
2 All Others
----
77 Total points per game (a rather lofty total)
I hope Lucas surprises me and ends up being a double digit scorer. I'm really anxious to see who's going to step up this year. Go ILLINI!

Which campus is that? Chicago?
I think having our 3 best defensive players that we were missing last year will help a bit.Offensively, we should be good. But I'm more concerned about our defense. That has to really improve.

I was hoping to see Darius Paul in an Illini uniform. Thought his interior passing and toughness would of greatly helped us. Unfortunately I think his recruitment and that of the Crosby set into motion the problems we had the last 2-3 years. Crosby was supposed to be a solid shooter and possibly back-up pg. Paul cost us 2 years in a position of great need.
Would he need to sit out if we need a transfer next year?Ya, if he stays out of trouble he should dominate. This robert morris is known for having a few "trouble makers" or however you want to categorize it. Hope he stays away from the trouble.
I mean, you can gain that respect through hype, but look at it from an outsider's perspective. Various combinations of this roster have been terrible over the past three years and Groce has no track record of anything other than mediocrity.
We're making preseason predictions based on the narrative turn many of us believe the Groce era is about to take. It's conclusion-first thinking, even if it's a well-argued, high-information conclusion. Neutrals do a ranking and are just reacting to the fact that we've done absolutely nothing to give anyone faith that we're going to out compete Maryland or Iowa or Purdue or Michigan or whoever. Everything they have seen refutes that conclusion.
I imagine those plays just weren't executed well and probably weren't anymore complicated than what is expected of high level basketball teams.
I prefer that approach than trying to play for a 40 point game. I'm still sure the playbook was reduced when all the injuries occurred.
I get your point and is a valid one. Given current players on the team, a good X's and O's coach will try to draw the best plays that fit the players that he has. Not plays that would work IF he had better players.
Of course, there is a natural limit on the abilities of the players, so even the best plays that could be drawn for those players will not necessarily result in wins. An argument could be made that last year personnel gaps were so great that no matter the plays drawn, Groce would not be able to win more.
Putting last year aside, however, the question remains: Has Groce shown so far in his tenure at Illinois that he makes good in-game decisions and draws plays that maximize his players' set of abilities? I think opinions will vary on this one.
