Not really sure where to put this, but thought it was relevant to Illini fans.

Dee Brown posted an Instagram picture of him, Deron and Luther saying "three headed monster" with a caption. Who comments? Charlie Villaneuva, saying "I'm missing from this pic lol coach self fault"

Oh what could have been....

instead of predicting wins for a schedule we haven't fully seen yet...how about go over the games that we know we are playing?

Miznoz-likely a loss, theyre going to be really big and talented, but we'll see
Depaul-I'd say about a 75% chance of a win-we are way more talented and will want that in-state win at home
New Mexico St/NewMexico?-should be a win, hopefully the UC games are games wecan look foward to from now on
UNLV-50/50, they have some really talented guys coming in, one is a All-American center, they'll match up with us well on the perimiter in terms of athleticism and size as well

If the misery game was a month later I'd like our chances better. Although our team has talent . They're young , unfamiliar with new system and each other

I don't know anything about DePaul but JMO, if we only have "about 75% chance of beating them at home", then it's going to be a longgggggg year.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the guards in the offense actually do post up, but not the five

Guards will post on the second cut. Bigs will roll then post off the back side pick/handoff and roll. If they're not open they'll repost for a high low on the first reversal pass to the slot. When that's not open they'll reset to the high post.

Did some digging into BU's coaching career and saw some interesting stats..

While at Kansas St they ran BU's offense and in 2011 had a roster with only 3 players over 6'8 but finished 9th in the nation in offensive rebounds, and 39th in total rebounds, and shot 44% from the field, and 63rd in the nation in points scored

In 2010 they had a similar roster with only 4 players over 6"7 and finished 4th in offensive rebounding, and 7th in total rebounds nationally, and shot 46% from the field, and 4th in the nation in total points scored.

I think the narrative that we will struggle with a small lineup is overstated, the offense puts guys in position to crash the offensive glass, with guys like LB/KN who have a knack at getting loose balls, and big guards, I think we will actually see improvement in rebounding this year even with the loss in size. Just my 2 cents...

They return everyone from last years team, and gave good games to teams like Butler, Xavier, Villanova,Providence,Seton Hall...I think they're going to give us their best game.

Missouri will be super young as well. They will have considerably more talent than us but young and maybe even younger when it comes to key minutes being played.

You're forgetting Black would also have to handle and pass at a guard level if he's playing outside. He hasn't shown the ability to do that yet. It will be a lot easier for him to play the high post. He can hit elbow j's, and set good screens. Scoring off one dribble from the high post is an easier skill to learn than guard level ball handling and passing.

In theory, but at the same time he will likely be covered by the other teams 4; so I don't think the bar will be as high as the true guards that will be working against defenders more comfortable defending the perimeter. If they cover him with more of a wing, then rotate the offense so he gets more post ups. He may do just fine at the 4.

This - they will be relying on Freshman - Porter & Tilmon a lot and good chance they haven't figured out much by December. We lost a lot of minutes, but Kipper/TJL/Finke/Black/AJ all have started a game in the B1G, Alstork is a 5th year, we are less dependent on any one freshman

Yup, it's all speculation. My sense at this point:

1. Biggest concern was the gaping hole at center, and we have one. A true freshman is going to get beat...a lot. But the idea of having Finke/Black as our only defense for the 5 made me cringe.
2. BIG will be competitive. MSU looks like they should be set for a FF run. After that, I'm not sure. I've seen early top-25 lists that include Maryland, NW, Minny, Mich, Purdue, and MSU.
3. I'm not excited about our overall talent level this year. When I say talent, I don't mean long-term potential, I'm just looking to optimistically project our guys relative to the upper half of the BIG. Longer term, I think we have a pretty decent ceiling.
4. I think talent will be ok, and we'll perform better than the sum of the parts --something that's been epicly lacking for years.
5. We're going to see a lot of minutes with young guys. Even our upper classmen are in a new system, and the changes are dramatic. Remains to be seen how tough they are on the road or during difficult stretches.

Regardless of what happens, I think we'll be fun to watch, and we'll see guys and the team develop.

DePaul lost Billy Garrett, Jr., arguably their best player.

I don't think we talk enough about how good Kipper could be this year. He's a potential second team big ten guy in this system

Anyone who doesn't believe playing small ball works need to watch more basektball. Not only are many college teams going small (see Nova) and winning, its also some what of an epidemic in the NBA. Teams are more and more reliant on the three and high percentage inside shots, which aren't just reserved for 7 footers.

I'm not worried about scoring, BU will figure out a way. Will we be a top 10 scoring team? Maybe, probably not, but we have a better offense than last year. My only hang up is going to be our defense. Kipper and TJL seemed to do well enough but if we are riding with Black/Finke/Ebo at the 5, theres gonna be some rough games. I think Finke will have more rebounds and pts than Mav did, but Mav actually developed into a half decent defender. Need an Egwu on this team.

Highest 3 pt percentage on the team last year ;). If he can defend the four effectively, I agree he can explode.
