If he hits north of 45% the next two seasons, I will buy it. But 42.2% and then 38% don't warrant such lofty praise.

JCL has the most career 3 pt'ers made in the country for any Soph. from P5 teams.

And has he attempted the most also? Or no? Would love to see the stat link if you have it.

EDIT: Eh, I take it back. Percentages aren't everything. He hoists em up quite a bit.

You'd think the season-long failed attempt to nickname the '05 team would have cured us of this.

I guess I have to ask again, why is everybody writing off Frankie Jr (Damonte)? He had a knee injury not an amputation. He would have competed for Mr Basketball this year had he been able to play so I think that assuming he is going to just lie down is making a mistake. .

Yes, everyone is assuming he's going to lie down. That's what's happening. Worst part is, it's not simply an innocent mistake made by lots of people. It's a massive conspiracy. You're on this one like Alex Jones.

I imagine you're looking at a starting lineup of
Smith
Lucas
JCL
Black
Finke

I'm curious to see how Lucas plays off the ball, because it sounds like Smith will likely start as our point guard

I imagine Frazier and Kipper will come off the bench and play prominent minutes

My guess is a grad transfer or first year post player will fill the role of coming off the bench and playing the remaining prominent minutes

DJW, Jordan, and Williams will likely fight for the few minutes that remain.

I do think that if Williams recovers and plays up to his potential that he could see some bigger minutes later in the year.

It's really quite sad people convinced Tilmon that he wouldn't be a good fit in Underwood's system because there is so much available playing time next year. On top of that, Tilmon would have a plethora of good guards to play with that can get him the ball.

How about a nickname for our incoming freshman instead? Mark, Trent, and Damonte - MTD - Rollin' into town! I can see their pictures on the sides of buses all over town.

Ok, redoing my rotation after Mark Smith's signing (I'm sure Coach Underwood will be taking notes :D). In order of PT:

PG - Te'Jon Lucas, Mark Smith, Trent Frazier

SG - Jalen Coleman-Lands, Trent Frazier, Aaron Jordan

SF - Mark Smith, Kipper Nichols, Aaron Jordan, DJ Williams

PF - Leron Black, Kipper Nichols, DJ Williams

C - Mike Finke, Leron Black

A few things: In BU's offense, the SG and SF are the same, so I started MS at the 3 based on defensive matchups. Also, although I'd start MS at the 3, I would still have him initiate the offense regularly, especially when TJL is out of the game. The same goes for Frazier.

The 4 is also essentially a wing position in this offense, so while I think Black will start there, I think we'll see a lot of Kipper at the 4. In fact, I'd expect a fair amount of Kipper at the 4 alongside Black at the 5. I also don't think Finke plays anywhere but the 5 given our personnel.

I just misread something in an article--funny font or something. And what I saw was "Frightening Illini." Though maybe we ought to save that for football, maybe the O-line or D-line or linebackers, whenever they're ready for it.

Frying Illini?

My bad!

Maybe to start the season, but depending on what they do with the remaining scholarships you probably have to stagger Black and Finke. Also, Underwood runs a 4 out offense, which makes me think Black and Finke won't spend that much time on the floor together.

With that in mind, I think you see Kipper in the starting rotation as your "4" or DJW if the light goes on.

I just wish I had more confidence in JCL.
I have that same little prickle of disquiet when I consider JCL. The defense and handles are in the back of my mind. My rationalization of it is that hitherto he has been playing under a coach who does not develop players. This is sure to be a trend Underwood bucks.

I hope he does. We have a full stable of guards that could all end up being pretty danged good.

Kipper is gonna find a way into this lineup.

Lucas/Smith/Frazier, JCL, Kipper, Black, Finke.

Same with JCL. I hope Underwood is able to develop him and play to his potential. I've been disappointed with JCL so far. It says something that I don't feel particularly comfortable with putting him in my starting lineup.

At OSU BU had 3 players average 30 minutes per game. Two were 6' guards, the third was a 6'6 SF. There were another 7 players between 13 and 20 minutes. One 6'9, one 6'8 and one 6'7. Of the other 4, one was 5'11" and the other 3 were 6'5-6. They were essentially the same size as us next year. We also had 10 guys with 13+ minutes, but only MH, at 33, played more than 25 minutes per game. Of course, we were most successful when only 7 guys hit the floor...

I was just looking at their stats old man... you beat me to it!

Starting lineup beginning of season:

Finke
Nichols
JCL
Lucas
Smith

Finke playing the pinch post. Either one of Smith or Lucas can initiate the offense. More than likely Smith, so he can post up as the 2nd cutter after the reversal. If they have a smaller guy on him he can do some damage down there.

P g will be by committee. 7 secs not long for someone to roll ball up court. OMG I still remember Lucas doing that. Think BU will be like a traffic cop waving guys in and out. Pg won't have ball in his hands very long, it will be in the basket.

I just watched the video interview with Underwood where he called himself a "fundamentals guy." I like that. Yeah, the playbook is fine, but what does that matter if you can't execute? Fundamentals come first.

Also mentioned, that he doesn't concern himself with positions but rather creating mismatches. I like that too. It plays off the fundamentals. You get the fundamentals and you can adapt. You take the initiative and take it to the other team. Let them try to figure out what the heck you are doing.

Yep. It potentially cost Oregon a national championship this season. BU's ability to adapt has me very hopeful. Systems and core principals are great, and probably very necessary, but basketball 101 still matters and you have to be able and willing to adapt to your players' strengths, and expect them to be able to adapt to changes.

Feels like that video belongs in this thread rather than the recruiting thread.

Anyway, this quote from Underwood made me happy and hopeful as well: "I've loved what I've seen out here in terms of our guys competing and trying to get better."

Underwood mentioned Kipper has one of the highest 3pt % on the team so far from the skill workouts. Kipper has to start IMO.

And mentioned his ball handling ability. Kipper could easily start at the 3 if BU believes he handles the ball well enough.
