Game story and post-game press conference for those interested.

Kendrick Nunn recorded a double-double, scoring 40 points and grabbing 10 rebounds as the Oakland men’s basketball team cruised past Central Michigan 108-88 Sunday afternoon at the O’rena during its hurricane relief game. Nunn also dished out eight assists and shot 13 of 16 from the field including eight of 11 from the three-point line.

Wow. Would be shocking if kempe develops nunn into an NBA player. Would think even less of groce as a coach than I thought of him before. Rooting for nunn, despite his horrible and indefensible situation here

I think KN has as much talent as BP his sr year...loved his toughness and D. would really like to see a success story with him. I think he and MH would have gotten to the tourney if he didnt have the regrettable incident. pulling for him.

Nunn has a good/quick elevation on his jump shot and has good athleticism. But he needs to improve his ballhandling to be considered for the NBA.

BP3 has much better handles, which is why he eventually made it to the NBA. Groce started playing him at PG later in the season. Nunn had no right hand and isn't quite as tall as BP3. But you never know, in the year off he might have worked really hard on his handles.

Unfortunately, Groce's offense depended on guys winning 1 on 1 battles. Only BP3, Rice, and Hill were good at that under Groce. Everyone else was kind of left out. His offense didn't take advantage of players strengths.

That's what I'm looking forward to with BU. He constantly talks about taking advantage of mismatches. He's going to get each guy on this team in a spot on the floor where they can excel. A big guard like Damonte or Smith will get touches in the post against smaller players. This is something Hill should've been doing constantly. And the high post is an area that Groce almost never used. I can't wait to see smart basketball again.

What would you choose between:
Groce + Tilmon or BU + Ayo. I think both will get Smith because of Walker. JG

Totally meaningless comparison. First, Ayo himself said during his commitment that he really liked Illinois even under Groce. Second, what are we comparing? A class of 1 (Ayo) versus a class of nobody (under Groce)? Maybe Groce would have gotten some players too.

It is meaningless, Groce left. We have enough problems figuring who will join Ayo, let alone trying to hypothesize about a hypothetical class under another coach.

Agree with this 100%.

Groce ran the worst offense I can recall seeing at ILL.....and that goes back 40+ years. Hoping for a little more of the 2004-05 offense this season!

I heard that DaMonte started today and has been tearing it up.....

Glad we have him man if hadn't gotten hurt he might won Mr. Basketball or been a legit contender

Thanks! Anyone else hear anything. Scrimmage has been over for hours and all we've gotten is that Illini ended up with more points (don't know if that means anything or not) and that DaMonte started.

Guess I'm not used to operating under a coaching regime where "secret" things (e.g., secret scrimmages, recruiting) are really secret.

I've think I've heard more about "secret" national security issues today than we have about the secret scrimmage.

At least Weber had a cohesive offense that wasn't best described as "herding cats."

Re: Nunn. I hope he does well. I don't have many good things to say about men who act violently against their s/o, but I also believe in the ability of people to turn around. I remember Melvin (Nunn) making some sort of comment about Groce not being tough enough on the team, and that Kampe would be good for Kendrick.

As for this year's Illini... if DMW turns into a sleeper star, that means that we're going to be able to keep up a sustained guard-led attack throughout the game, as our stable is pretty deep currently. That's exciting!

I don't know what your definition of mistake is, but didn't he assault a woman?
misdemeanor battery.

Not excusing it but I probably did worst to my sister when I was a kid after my big sister scratched the heck out of me. KN deserved the punishment but he is not a felon.

Every young person deserves encouragement and 2d chances. My dad encouraged me after my family fight. He still believed that I was still a good kid....but only after the belt I got (so I had an arm full of scratches from my sister and a sore rear end from my dad). Different strokes, but I try not to judge kids from one incident.

I would be surprised if Damonte isn’t our best overall defender on this team. He has a very nice jumper to go with it also, smooth just like his pops.

Trent Frazier--14 pts on 4-8 3 pt shooting. Heard he hit 15 three's in a row at practice this week.
