Samba is an international kid that arrived arrived at a high school in Colorado as a HS Sophomore, then transferred to Florida Prep, and then reclassified from '19 to '18. Needless to say, his transcripts were probably tricky.

Plus he took his SAT in Detroit.

Has to be Illinois issue. NCAA may prevent him from playing but isnt going to stop anyone from enrolling.

That sounds right. Bradley is in the same boat. They have a big that reclassified, also a foreign born player. He's enrolled in summer classes, but hasn't cleared the NCAA clearinghouse yet.

NCAA can stop you from going on scholarship.

If Illinois let him come all the way to campus, it's because they'd accepted him as a student.

That's Occam's Razor anyway.

The only way it's an Illinois issue is if in his last semester (acceptances are conditional on completing the requisite classes obviously) he flunked something that was Illinois required but not NCAA required. For a normal kid that's just the foreign languages requirement. But Kane has had a circuitous path, so who the heck knows.

Make this an Illinois admissions problem when you see him suited up at another D1 school.

Man, extra tough break for the “Ebo must have left because Samba was a surefire starter” crowd.

I'm still believing in BU, but this falls squarely on him and his staff. We've set ourselves up for this. You have to successfully recruit players that have little to no risk. The more frequently you load the roster with kids who aren't committed to the school, don't have the required skills, don't have a water-tight transcript, don't fit your style of play, etc, then the more frequently you'll have attrition that causes you to scramble and lower your standards the next year. They have to get it done. Loyola and lots of other schools do.

Josh Whitman is setting up a press conference later today to announce future plans to re-renovate SFC.

Yeah, this is a smart way to look at it.

I would say, don’t give up on seeing Kane in O&B just yet, though obviously if you’re looking to start a true freshman big, missing the summer learning and development period is a big problem.

It will be interesting if we hear what the hold up is. I'm pretty sure that someone on Underwood's staff has been in contact with Samba and also admissions before today. You would think that they would have had a decent idea on if there were any problems. As someone said, it might have been something from this last semester of school.

Looking at the Illinois AD directory, I would think it would either be under the Academic Services area or the Compliance area. I'm sure they are in contact with admissions all the time.

Between now and when the issue is resolved where does Samba go?

Since the plan is currently to still come back to Illinois, can the staff remain in contact with him, guide him/advise him etc?

Is this Illinois admissions not accepting classes or an NCAA eligibility issue?

If this were NCAA; they would say NCAA. This is obviously University of Illinois Admissions not accepting transcripts.

To be clear, you can't go into any degree of detail about this stuff publicly due to federal FERPA regulations. Kane could personally, but Underwood, Whitman, or other university personnel cannot.

Don't expect to hear any more details.

Yeah, good point. I should have know that after dozing off last week during my kid's orientation. I heard FERPA and immediately the zzz's hit me.

Seriously, anything academically should have been under review long before now. You don't bring the kid to campus then send him home if he doesn't have classes necessary.

They may have been waiting on his final transcripts. If they were waiting on something that was being finalized in this Spring semester, possibly.
