My impression of Ayo was lifted considerably with his recent showing. Didn't think Trent was a true point guard but Ayo definitely is. They will make each other better and was ecstatic to see him play defense. Tough to judge the rest of the pieces but think they have the physical tools.

It’s likely that Ayo and Frazier will start as the wings with Feliz running the point. That’s what Feliz was brought in to do. Three point guards starting has worked well before.

I don't know, but do you really think Feliz will start over Damonte? I guess if Feliz is better than Damonte, then we'll have a decent chance to surprise some people.

I don't see that one at all, not even remotely the same position...Feliz may start early giving Ayo a learning curve till conference...maybe even then, he wont start in place of DaMonte however imo.

He would start in place of damonte in that it would shift Frazier and Ayo. But I think either way it’ll be either damonte or Feliz starting but not both at least to start the season.

Good problem to have. Feliz was brought in to run the team. The coaches are high on him in that role. I guess we will see how it shakes out.

All speculation but after the initial run with 3 pgs how often do you think we’ll see that lineup as opposed to like 2 of the 3 while one rests?

I’m guessing if coaches like it that much we’ll start and end with it if possible

You don't run a guy off that started 19 games and averaged 20+MPG if you don't think his replacement is better. El General will start!

Last year's starting lineup at beginning-Alstork, Black, Finke, TJL, & MSmith
Last year's starting lineup at the end-Alstork, Black, Frazier, TJL & Nichols

Don't see giving up the length but sure a lot of combos will be tried. Probably depend on matchups and chemistry and may change as the season progresses hopefully.

 You can't see Damonte starting in place of Feliz? So you don't see how TF, Ayo, and DMW can play together? But you can see Feliz, TF, and Ayo?

Awesome. Hope he is able to be an above-average B10 starting PG.

I haven't see Ayo play a ton, but it seems like he is a guy who is at his best with the ball in his hands. Maybe not?

Sounds like a Lonzo vs Lebron type discussion brewing...?

I am so, so confident that this will not happen. Even if Underwood himself thinks it's going to happen as of right now, it still won't happen.

I know you're trying to be funny here, but not sure I get it.

I think Feliz, Ayo, and TF will all be able to play point for long stretches and TF and Ayo will be able to play on the wing for long stretches as well.

Another poster tried to make it sound crazy that Damonte and Feliz could possibly battle for a starting position. I think Tevian, Damonte, Feliz, Griffin, and Jordan will all battle for a starting spot, that is essentially the same starting spot. Could see all of them starting at some point.

Ayo, TF, Kipper, and a big are all probably pretty safe bets to start most or all games, IMO.

agree alot of possible combinations. I think its somewhat futile to guess on starters considering BU started 10 different players LY ... minutes were fairly evenly distributed from 15 to 25 min (TF highest at 26 min per game). Many starting combos ahead. MS started ahead of TF early last year and we know how that ended up.

Ima go ahead and say I think its a good chance El General wins the Mark Smith award for most overhyped Illini in the preseason in 2018. That's really based on not much other than the inauspicious nature of where he came from and some not very thorough examination of youtubes videos.

100% agree. One might also add his being stuck behind the best player on the team.

After I posted it I knew I should have been more clear. I meant that on a game basis and not seasonal.

Trent Frazier is really good with the ball in his hands.

You’re aware that in the base offense once the ball is entered to the wing the 4 outside guys all do the same thing?

Also, imagine if you will, he catches the ball on the wing (particularly left wing) in our lifted spacing. Now imagine him driving baseline. Now let your imagination run wild.

Since we're doing guided meditation here I don't want to give anyone a bad trip by causing them to picture Trent, Feliz, Ayo and choose your Illini "bigs" out there trying to guard anybody.

I am confident our guards/wings can guard well

I'm relatively confident we can achieve adequacy in that department, but that's because I'm projecting sane lineup construction.

If you add up the minimum amount of game time and stat contribution from each player necessary to avoid snark and eye-rolling gifs from this board, I think we're going to be playing games that are about 75 minutes long and scoring roughly 280 points per ;)
