Wondered if he was a redshirt anyway. Wasn't here in the summer, looked out of shape and didn't see him getting time ahead of Kane or Giorgio or DeLaRosa when healthy. Not a bad thing to let him develop and contribute in the future.
I'm still looking for an explanation of the injury. Does anyone have that?

I'm still amazed at how hyped up Giorgi is. And all basically off a video of him dribbling around cones, dunking, and dancing.

Our frontcourt situation is terrifying.
Hard to predict anything since none of these guys have played college basketball before.
But if I had to guess logically what is going happen, I'm guessing other college frontcourts are going to destroy us.
I don't see how anyone could predict anything else at this point?

'Destroy' is too strong IMO. If you'd said we'll struggle to match up in most games, I'd agree, though.

On the plus side, getting De La Rosa gives us at least one viable option at Center, and he seems to have made the kind of jump last season that you hope your bigs make. Should be able to rebound, and made his FTs. Also I think he's hungry to come back and prove himself.
That said, it's not hard to come up with negatives: He tore his ACL to end the season, played like a traditional post center, and hasn't faced the level of competition we have. He didn't reach all-conference anything in the MAC, and fouls like an Illini (5.5 per 40).

While I'd normally say that's a glass half full situation to add depth, our front court turnover has made his addition quite valuable. Hope he's healthy enough to play with full confidence.

Assuming he's healthy, after ADR I'd guess the most game ready true freshman will be Giorgi. Kane is said to have a high ceiling, so I imagine the two will get plenty of minutes.

All that said, I would not be surprised if most of the BIG has a better front court than us. I just hope the gap isn't so much that we can't compete overall, as I think we'll have strengths elsewhere.

"Giorgi" guys... Not sure when "Giorgio" was invented but it isn't correct. Carry on.

They used to talk about the Curse of the Bambino in Boston for years...until the BoSox came back from down 0-3 and stunned the Yankees by winning an unprecedented 4 straight and then swept the Cardinals 4 straight, beating two teams that had won over 100 games.
Good news then. The curse only lasts like 80 or 90 years

Wow. Thats been a nationally televised game for as long as I can remember. Shows how low both programs have sunk.

I remember a Braggin' Rights game in the late 90s that was on ESPN Plus because I remember Altenberger and whoever the older PBP guy for the Illini was at the time calling that game when it aired on Channel 3 in Champaign.

It is a bad thing, he isn't going to get better sitting on his tail recovering from an injury.

If he is sitting, due to whatever reasons that would prevent him from being a productive contributor, then it is not.

Yeah...but that was what? 90 years later. I don't care to wait quite that long for Illinois to be relevant again.

BoSox lost 4 World Series all in 7 games in the span of 80 plus years, plus numerous other playoff series, so they we certainly relevant, just couldn't reach the Mountain Top until '04.

Disagree. Word from early practices is that He and Da'Monte were the surprises, i.e., that they were exceeding expectations. So it's not just off of some cone drill video.

Don't think Giorgi is a game changer but think he will contribute. Think he is equivalent to Mav as a junior. Not betting the beach house however.

Antigua is wondering the streets of Budapest looking for anybody over 6'6". :giggle:
He just needs to look in the phone book for anyone with the surname of Nagy. That translates to "big" in English. ;)

I hate to be a wet blanket, and I want it to be true, but I remember all the praise heaped upon Mark Smith before the season started. I WANT to be wrong in my comparison.

So we're all the way down to comparing Mark Smith.....a 5 star recruit with blue blood offers....and the subsequent expectations, with Giorgi.....a 3 star recruit that we are just excited to see contribute.

Stay salty IL.

It’s not comparing Mark Smith to Giorgi, it’s pointing out that pre-season expectations can be very iffy.

Maybe not a bad thing....redshirt...join up with Walker as a starting forwards next year.....lol

And sit Kipper and Jones? Not likely....but possible. Time will tell....and that problem may never be need to be solved. Or someone else, like Liddell or Timme, will have to be considered. I like the guys we have now as they are in hand and not the bush.
