Unless the other team is playing positionless basketball, too. Then they'll just match up randomly on every possession.
Better for Illini in that case imo. Kip not having to defend in the post or GB not getting constantly stuck defending on the block would be a good thing. Versatility and length help us out.

Ayo (1) TF (2) DW (3) Kipper (4) Giorgi (5)
Undoubtably that will be right at some point in a game during the year, but no one will play 40 minutes & we often spend too much time worrying about who starts. The way I see it we are 1,2,3 heavy & 4, 5 light. How many minutes do you think Giorgi will be able to play? Adonis/Higgs are hurt/recovering; if practice reports say Kane isn't ready, divide the readiness number in half for a ceiling. I don't expect much from Kane/Higgs this year at the 5, who knows with Adonis, but if you told me he could average 20 minutes for the entire season I would take that in a heartbeat. If you told me I could get 15 quality minutes from Giorgi I would take that in a heartbeat as well, but I expect less from both. But with that logic it means Kipper is a 5 for 5 minutes a game, I'm guessing it will be more, so if Kipper plays 30 mpg, now we have to find another 4 for 15 mpg. Before Giorgi ever plays a 4 or Kipper plays a 3 we need a minor miracle to fill the 5 minutes.

I know how we defend the other team's frontcourt is a huge concern and rightfully so, but we don't factor in what a smaller lineup does to the other team. They have to figure out how a traditional big man is going to have to defend Kip, or a smaller quicker player. Can we draw fouls and take them out of the game? Can we force the other team to play smaller just to defend us? Last year we got a lot of zone because of that. If we can hit a better % of 3s and can take them out of the zone, we might force teams into lineups that are easier for us to defend.

The "positionless" term gets tossed around a lot and I don't know if all take it seriously, but the above lineup and position next to them is who those guys will be asked to defend.
Agree on the defense, but I think offensively there are also some skill sets involved, you don't want to throw five 6' guards out there if you expect to get many rebounds around the basket, it would also be nice to have someone capable of posting up at some point and draw some fouls on an opposing big.

People seem to be really high on Adonis. Purely based off of paper, I don't see a guy who can give us 20 mins a game. 3.6 fouls/game in the MAC and coming off a knee injury late seems like a bad combo for a team in desperate need of a defensive guy up front. Hope I'm wrong, but we've seen first hand how that kind of injury completely changes a player.

First of all, Thorne was a diabetic. They don't heal as well as most lids do. Second, Da'Monte was coming off of a knee injury last year and was solid on D and in rebounding. That's what we want from DeLaRosa.

Hi everyone, I recently made a film room style blog focusing on Chris Beard and his Texas Tech motion offense. I am going to make my next project about BU and his Spread Offense but would love some feedback first to know what you all would want to see. Thank you in advance! https://t.co/RocYzGcN7S

Once Adonis is back come December, Kipper plays the 4 and no where else, so we need 10 minutes at the 4 and those come from Trevian and Griff. Giorgi, Adonis and Kane divide the minutes at the 5. Play the ho hand.

Does anyone know if Higgs is likely to play this year? I am guessing not, but the coaches seem mum about the injury, etc. Maybe they don't want to talk about it because of hipaa rules? Even if he was cleared to play tomorrow, he appears to have a long way to go to get in shape.

I can't imagine they would just write off the possible availability of a tall person. But I don't think he's going to be available any time soon.

Thorne had almost a year to fully recover, but I wont argue with his metabolic disorder affecting his recovery time. I still think he's a valid data point that shouldn't be thrown out (just as DMW is). IIRC, DMW tore his ACL early his senior HS year. Let's say thats November, Adonis was injured in March. Thats a third of a year longer DMW had to recover than Adonis does. Also Adonis probably carries close to another 75 lbs, thats a lot of extra work for knee.

Honestly, I think Thorne was a better player before injury than Adonis was. DMW was also a much better player overall in HS. Of course, transitioning from HS to college is a big leap. What I'm trying to say is this, that people who are expecting 20+ minutes of solid 5 play from Adonis are probably going to be disappointed. Of course I don't know whats really going to happen, but he was extremely foul prone at KSU and his shooting numbers don't exactly jump out at you and factoring in a late season knee injury, there's definitely more going against him than for him.

Is this part of the positionless motion scheme ?

Jon Rothstein tweeted the 10 most impactful JUCO's and Feliz' name was on the list. Austin Trice, too. Rothstein must have watched the secret scrimmage.:)

Let's keep imagining and guessing and suggesting.

It's a top 25 class. That's it.

We will have another top 25 class for next year.

And we will be a tournament team next year.

And I will continue drinking Orange Soda instead of Orange Kool-Aid.

UMMMM, We have a tournament team THIS year! We're going to surprise a lot of teams.

Was there a ruling on redshirts for basketball too? Or just football?

Da'Monte played a couple games iirc, so late Nov., really probably December for his surgery. The Illinois website says Adonis is 260 and Da'Monte is 200, but your point is valid re extra weight. I figure 15-20 mins/game for him and Giorgi with Kane getting the rest. It's good to have multiple options anyway.

Feliz drew 11 fouls in the scrimmage. Nice little stat!

The same as a forced turnover, right?? Not sure that is kept as an individual stat but taking 11 charges is impressive. Also heard he was the leading scorer.

I don't believe all 11 were charges (that'd be pretty incredible). My understanding is between charges and getting fouled driving/attacking the hope he got vandy to commit 11 fouls against him.
