Technically he did suit up for the IW game. Went through some pregame stuff. I think last I heard he was cleared for practice but not contact? Even if he does go in Maui, I wouldn't expect much until December
According to pre-game thread, now cleared for contact. He is listed as day to day.

Boy it's tough. He's needed so badly right now, but he's also needed so badly at as close to 100% as we can get him for whatever length of time we can have him.

Keeping the margin respectable against Gonzaga isn't worth losing to Minnesota in February.

Just gotta listen to your doctors and training staff I guess.

But it's good news that he can practice and show our guys an experienced big body at the very least.

I'm sure they won't, but I hope they don't put him out there before he is 100%.

He's not going to be truly 100% until next year, and in a very real sense he's not going to be 100% until he's been out there playing for a bit. Playing is part of the recovery process.

It's not cut-and-dried. And you can just imagine that Adonis really, really wants to play.

I wish people would really think before saying things about "future pros" on a team. I just watched Jalen Brunson the other night & he was the National College POY /2 time NCAA champion point guard and he wasnt even drafted in the first round! If even one of Ayo, Tevian, Griffin, or Kipper get drafted in the current two round NBA setup I would be thrilled.
Lots of great college players never make it in the pros while there are many college players who were not superstars who find a home. Walter Berry another Player of the Year in NCAA who failed in the NBA. Different game, different skills sets.

It all depends on what is meant by "future pro's". There are about 75,000 people who earn their living playing basketball worldwide. They are all professional basketball players. If you are limiting it to the 300 players in the NBA, it's a much different conversation.

Depends on his health. If he can play, it would be hard to hold him out. We are extremely thin on the frontcourt.

Regardless of this, I don't think this kid is playable this year? Seems to have come in with more than a few issues needing resolved, it is reported he is working to catch up etc...but catching up is not generally what one does in a Power 5 conference... redshirt, especially in light of all this and the (class) for next year as of now?

What issues are you talking about? If you're talking playing-wise, he does seem like a raw athlete but even then...he's a heck of an athlete. Like maybe most athletic on the team. We could use his rebounding immediately

EDIT Nevermind, Tevian is by far the most athletic. My bad

How many rebounds would an out of shape, behind the curve, freshman give us?

Him coming in overweight and out of shape is a concern. I almost didn’t recognize him.

I don't know if this article has been posted, but the Inside the Hall (IU) preview of the Illini below seems pretty even-handed.

https://www.insidethehall.com/2018/09/27/2018-19-ith-season-preview-illinois-fighting-illini/

My favorite (and realistic, IMO) part is this:

Bottom Line: The preseason prognosticators aren’t high on Illinois, but the Illini have to a chance to be dangerous because of their guard play. Frazier has significant upside and Dosunmu will be one of the league’s best freshmen. If Feliz is able to reliably act as a facilitator for both players, Illinois will have two capable playmakers on the wing. The roster attrition is also likely to be a net positive for Illinois as Underwood and his staff now have a roster better suited to their style of play. Last season’s roster was put together hastily after the job transition and this year’s group should have pieces that fit better together. It’s a stretch to project Illinois anywhere other than the bottom five in the league, but this is a group that should improve as the season moves along and could produce some upsets in the State Farm Center.

Dunno, but I think Mr Basketball will have a hell of a time against the pressure and length.

Or he knows exactly how to attack our weaknesses. I have a few Miznoz buddies and I'm not saying anything until we actually see what happens on the court. Hopefully I'm the one talking trash at the end of the game.

But it would perfectly sum up the past 5+ years of Illini athletics if Smith, Tilmon, and Pickett beat us or even worse run us out of the gym.

I don’t care what MSmith has done over the past 9 months to improve he won’t be able to guard Ayo, Trent or Andre in space. He physically just doesn’t have the hips or foot speed. God didn’t bless him with the gift of anything lateral. That’s why he was HORRENDOUS on D last year.

Now- Tilmon does scare me. He and GB may be a war of attrition to see who can stay on the court longer without fouling out. We need the three headed monster to take it to the cup and go right at Tilmon. It should be a good one this year.

i totally agree on IDKWMSI...his lateral movement on defense had me wondering if he was injured somehow , but he was continually 1-2 steps behind his opponent with a dazed look on his face after being called for a foul....seems like he couldn't guard and watch ball movement at the same time....

They only beat central Arkansas 68-55 and mark smith had to go off for them to win. Our team looks much more cohesive and our system is night and day better
