I hope people are a little more realistic than that! We won one game against bad/depleted competition. Let’s see what we do against G-town and how we compete with Gonzaga before bandwagon jumping starts.

(With that being said, I do hope your band wagon becomes reality :thumb: )

Let’s not discount the mental impact of basketball. Playing defense against elite players is much harder than it looks; there are a lot of fundamentals involved, especially from a team defense standpoint.

I’m not saying MS will ever be a lock down ball defender, but the kid was late to the party, received a low amount of coaching, and was used to bullying his competition.

If you’re second guessing mentality at this game you are going to look a step slow. Let it play out before making point blank statements about this kids ability. Nobody needs bulletin board material

Maybe I am out of the loop, but I only just learned that Alan Griffin played for Oak Park River Forest for 2 years before his family moved. I hadn't realized he played half his high school in Illinois. The relationship makes much more sense now.

I agree, nobody should NEED bulletin board material. I get the expression as it is used regularly, but it is hard for me to wrap my head around. If a player needs more motivation for a game like the Braggin Rights then I would really call into question how motivated they are to play the game of college basketball at a high level night in and night out. Despite my critique I think MSmith and company will come in with plenty of motivation.

I understand your point of the mental aspect and there is truth to what you are saying. There is also observance of physical ability/limitation that is valid as well. “Horrendous” may have been too tough of a word, but his physical abilities on D last year were heavily exploited by our competition.

I feel like we have a few guys with "elite" skills in a few areas.

Frazier has elite quickness which shows on D and his ability to drive and get off quick shots.

Ayo seems to be elite in transition. With his quickness and that Euro step he seems to be near the top percentiles in converting on the break.

Jordan is an elite shooter. I know people say he didn't shoot well in 2nd half of year, but he shot 46% for the season from 3 I think, which has gotta be
near an Illini record (didn't look, but maybe Jamar Smith was close to 50% one year).

That is your starting backcourt and if they can be put in position to maximize those elite skills we will be very good. I can already see with the 3 point guards
ability to get in the lane and kick it out that Jordan will have many more open shots than the pass around the perimeter offense of last year.

Frazier's quickness is really just dependent on his effort, which doesn't seem to be an issue.

Ayo's quick hands and the other guys ability to force bad passes should get him a few break opportunities per game.

Hopefully in another year or two we can say we have other guys's with an "elite" level skill.

Tevians athleticism? Giorgis footwork (looked amazing moving down the lane following his guy)? Alan's jumpshot?

Guys like Kipper and Feliz are very well-rounded also.

I just hope coach figures out the way to maximize their strengths.....game 1 was an optimistic look at the future.

$60/seat in the upper level? Really?

Demand has gone up in the last few years. Season ticket holders on both sides take up almost all of the seats (which is great), so there are limited tickets available to the general public.

3rd party sellers last year only had tickets close to over 80 (before taxes) a few weeks before the game. Was going to go down, but decided that was too steep to watch them lose (hindsight though ;))

I AM getting old. There's no way I'd pay $60 for an upper level seat to a college game as much as I love the O&B . . . .OK, maybe I would . . . I paid more than that for upper level seats when we played WKU in Portland in 2009 after flying down from Anchorage. But in my defense, the last time I had seen the beloved was in 1984 . . . .

Can anyone recommend any bars or restaurants in Champaign which provide shuttles to State Farm Center for basketball games? Thanks in advance for any information. Go Illini!

IDK if they still do, but Fat City used to do something like this?

Joke, right? FWIW, I'm staunchly in Underwood's corner. He's an excellent coach and I believe he's going to get it done here. That said, our Plan A recruiting has been a long series of whiffs.* It is what it is.

* save one

I am starting to question his coaching after the Georgetown game. At some point the team needs to show some sort of defense. Your defensive philosophy cannot be get a turnover or allow a lay up. It gets pretty frustrating when it looks like your team cannot keep anyone in front of them and cannot get past any defenders. Especially true in late game situations which is why the vast majority of close games in his tenure have gone to the other side.

Isn't this a product of covering up for a lack of frontcourt defense and presence in the paint. This was the adjustment we made against MSU last year. Turn up the ball pressure to a crazy high level, because we can't defend you when you put the ball in the paint. If you think the D looks bad now, wait to see how we look if we relax on the ball pressure and let teams run their normal offense.

Yup. We are still lacking a couple of rim-protectors to clean up mistakes. Really hoping Samba gets up to speed.

Once it was shown that we were giving up too many layups/dunks, we should have made an adjustment. Some zone or at the very least, keep Giorgi in the paint, not trapping at the top of the key. What we were doing was not working.

Not really because it's not like teams are dumping the ball into the post and letting a big man destroy the interior. If that was the case I would say fine. What is happening is that the opposing guards are just blowing by their defenders and either getting a lay up themselves or dumping off for a dunk when someone slides over to stop the drive. Basically all the opposing team needs to do to score on every single trip down the court is avoid passing around the perimeter or making an entry pass both of which can lead to steals by the pressure defense. If the ball handler just drives they either get a lay up, an assist for a dunk, or a wide open kick for a 3.

They need to at least be able to keep a dribble drive in front of them half of the time. If it means less steals live with it. Right now they are giving up over 30% of shots at the rim at a better than 85% conversion. They shouldn't win any games with those kind of numbers.
