After last night's game, Kofi is now the nation's Dunkmaster Supreme

OK When was the last time we had a guy leading in this stat?

I'm only using Torvik, which doesn't provide all historical stats (not even sure when dunks became an "official stat"), but I pulled some tidbits for you. If I had to venture a guess as to when we last had a guy leading the nation in dunks, just flip the pages back to the Flyin' Illini.

2011-2012Myers Leonard51/56 (rank #23)Anthony Davis was #1 - 96/98
2010-2011Mike Davis41/45 (rank #33)Mike Glover (Iona) was #1 - 71/71
2019-2020Kofi35/37 (rank #49)Obi Toppin (Dayton) was #1 - 107/115
2010-2011Mike Tisdale28/29 (rank #85)Mike Glover (Iona) was #1 - 71/71

Edit: Kofi has more than doubled his dunks made per game vs. last year - and still has a bunch of games left to go (we've got a lot of tourney games, right?)

Guessing Battle or Anderson would have been leaders in 88-89 and would bet the team would have had more even with Ayo now making significant dunks. Did see that Anderson had 32 blocks and Hamilton 31 blocks and Kofi currently 32 with Giorgi second with 7. Team “Flying Illini” great stats but no one like Kofi.

I haven't read this thread so I don't know what you guys are talking about but I just wanted to say that Ayo is special.

Some nice stats on Kofi's performance thus far:
  • He leads the Big Ten in rebounding, averaging more than 10 rebounds per game.
  • He averages a double-double per game, with 17.2 points and 10.4 rebounds entering Friday’s contest.
  • Cockburn hasn't had fewer than 10 rebounds since Dec. 23 against Penn State, and has finished with fewer than 10 boards just four times all season.
  • Cockburn has over 80 dunks in his career, an Illini record — and his 40+ this season is near the tops in the NCAA.

Kofi already has the Illini record for career dunks and he hasn't even finished his sophomore year yet. Wow.
Last Illini to avg. a double double was Weatherspoon In '73

Not sure. Dunks were banned between 67 and 77. Don't remember many of our guys dunking before that.

Curbelo going through some growing pains? He’s had a really tough stretch of basketball. Hawkins is looking pretty solid.

So...how many more losses can we afford if we want a 1 seed? I’m thinking 1, MAYBE 2 max (if the second one is in the BTT finals). But I feel like we might either need to win out the regular season or win the BTT.

I’d say that sounds about right.

Ohio State doesn't seem to have too many losses left on their schedule.

Right now we would want them to beat Michigan at Ohio State but by the end of it, I could see Michigan losing some unexpected games in their tight schedule.

Based on what they have left, they might be the on paper favorite.

May well come down to Illinois @ Ohio State in the last scheduled game of the year.

Two more losses would give us 7. Has there ever been a #1 seed with 7 losses?

None. If we win out the regular season we can afford to lose one in the B10 tourney if its played.

The only sure way to be a 1 seed is to win the rest. Otherwise you are putting it in the hands of the committee. Kind of like counting the refs to make the right call at the end of a close game.

This is far from solid detective work, but there are a LOT of open slots coming up NEXT week (i.e., after the weekend of Saturday 2/20), with a few teams having zero games at all. I would not be surprised if there is some big shaking up of the schedule to get some makeup games in. Howard of Michigan has already issued his public condemnation of making Michigan make up every game, but if they don't play us, there will be a LOT of questions for the conference to answer. I would not be shocked if our Minnesota game got shifted to play Michigan that week, too.

Yes, in fact we were one of them in 2001.
I don't think Michigan will keep their #1 seed. They have a really tough schedule remaining. We may in fact claim their slot by the end of the day - today. Ohio State looks to be more assured of a Top 4 ranking than the Wolverines.

Lots of basketball yet to be played. And those Lunardi brackets look a lot friendlier if you can avoid Baylor/Gonzaga until the Final Four.

I expect so much better from you.

Over the last couple of years, we have ended a lot of absolutely obnoxious streaks. Are there any more out there?

We need to finish no worse than 15-5. I think Michigan will be hurt by the rescheduling of their games. I believe Michigan could lose to us and OSU and possibly Iowa if Iowa gets healthy. That would mean the B1G will come down to the OSU Illinois game for the 1 seed.
