Hopefully this is the year we don’t get screwed over by the tournament committee. Drawing Loyola as an 8 seed when in reality they were really in the 4-5 range, drawing Houston as a 5 when they were really more like a 2, and having Wisconsin get a 3 seed with a very easy draw (where they still had a quick exit lol) vs us getting a 4 when we were clearly the better team not only based off of the H2H but in terms of resume has certainly not been the best case scenario.

Good article! The Illini are once again relevant in College basketball. My brother was just up to visit and his son (my nephew) went to Baylor. They showed me a video they did of Mayer. My brother told me that they could not believe that he was coming to Champaign. I told him Believe it! We finally got a coach. I am old enough to remember past successes back to the 80's. Some of the younger fans on here that are just getting into the Illini need to chill and be patient. Good things are coming. In closing I would like to state that Brad deserves a Balls of Brass award for not only fishing these guys in but for extracurricular Pizza Hut activity on the side. Well done SIR! There will indeed be more hardware coming to Champaign!

The very reason that you are posting about this is because WE HAVE A CHANCE! Thinking about Weber and Groce years just makes a guy sick.

So, am thinking about this coming year's Illini Inter-squad games.... might be better than the inter-collegiate schedule!

There could be some real battles! I'm not sure that a potential first team of Clark, Shannon, Mayer, Melendez, and Coleman would dominate a team of Epps, Harris, Goode, Rogers, and Dainja. It might come down to whoever had the hot hand for the scrimmage. I would LOVE to be there to see the effort needed to win!

So what WOULD make the best starting five? Can you really keep Rogers off of it? Or Dainja? A five man substitution every 5-8 minutes?

I for one have never seen our team so deep with truly talented players.

Comments?

Think this depends on a lot of variables...who's our opponent, who's hot offensively, who's hot defensively, are we wanting to slow the pace in a particular game, or do we want to play uptempo more..do we need more rebounding??...maybe we want to play full court pressure def...maybe we want to play some half court trapping def......I would think the starting 5 will be constantly changing depending on what our needs are.....I know some people put a lot into who the starting 5 will be.....but for me I hope it changes throughout the season....you know at some point there will be injuries....the more people that are comfortable playing the starting role ....the more flexible and resilient we will be as a team....jat

I agree…and it probably will be defense that will determine who plays. That’s why Ty may play a key role.

Don't really care who the starting 5 is - more interested in matchups and the closing 5.

Piper is pretty spot on with all of his takes here, I really don't like MSU at all this season and OSU is a team that scares me a bit. Even the bit about Indiana being favorites *cringe*, I like us better by seasons end, but they'll likely be a bit more consistent on the way there.

Calling it now ... your 2022-23 Indiana Hoosiers are going to pull a 2010-11 Illinois Fighting Illini. And it will be delicious.

Look who has the 24th ranked backcourt in college basketball!!!

By year end I would expect our back court to be ranked in the top ten. They will be defensive monsters with talent to score from all three levels, and the personnel to stay fresh and run the other teams ragged, And they're tall and strong!
