I have no problems with cupcakes, especially considering the big game matchups that are also a part of the noncon schedule. Gives the team a chance to get acclimated playing together with little pressure. Also gives the opportunity for everyone to get some tick. I know that there is a contingent that seems to believe the rotation will be 9 or 10 on a regular basis, but I’m not buying it. Hopefully gives Harris, Perrin and Lieb — as well as any other player(s) that might see limited minutes during the competitive portion of schedule — some good chunks of time.

The desert
Thinking back to that Zona Home and Home and the road game at Cameron (albeit without any fans) were fun. Although, I am not mad about getting a spot in the Jimmy V Classic
It happens. But the Duke matchup was part of the B1G/ACC Challenge, and we just happen to be at home for it this year.

Agreed. Though it's not like he's ever been in that good of fitness since he became a coach.
I don’t know what has happened since then…and this doesn’t make him a marathon runner. But to his credit he was able to lose 135 pounds back in 2010 or whatever it was.

Matt Mayer cut the mullet ... Highly disappointing lol ...

Dainja looks the part ... I got to see a little preview of a side-by-side comparison from when he got here until now ... WOW, I hope Fletch posts that one

I think for me I expected Skyy, Ty, and Epps to all be ready and they look ready ...

The biggest surprise to me is Harris ... He might be the most athletic kid Brad has had and he is so freaking long it's insane and he loves to talk trash and isn't afraid to back it up ... Kinda like Trent in that way ... May not be a major player right away but Harris is gonna be a fan favorite ...

If I had one thing to kinda nitpick ... It would be Hawkins ... I just wish he would take the next step as a leader ... I mean he is the most experienced guy in terms of being at Illinois that we have and he spends a lot of time just clowning around and not being mentally freaking focused ... I know we have been blessed with Trent and Ayo and DMFW but I really thought Coleman would step up and it's just not the case ... Goode, and TJ were probably the most vocal guys ...
Appreciate the updates, as always! Lot's to love but can't be all sunshine and rainbows re:Hawkins. Not everyone has that make-up to be a leader hope he can keep himself in check and stay motivated with his own play hopefully seeing the dog mentality the freshmen bring checks his attitude some. Awesome to hear about Harris going to need that length once TSJ/Mayer move on.

Did commentary for a couple of games when L-ville played us. Marty was always a big boned kid but also a no-nonsense, smooth player who was tough to get up on. It hurt me to see him balloon up to having a big health issue....but I am just as glad to see him shrink back down. Good for him!! And good for him.

Marty is a good friend who I have known since he was born. His family is originally from my little hometown of Allendale (population 500) as was Ricky Leighty’s family, both their dad’s went to Allendale High and were fabulous basketball players. I played ball with a couple of Marty’s uncles and another was like a big brother to me…and I mean big. Marty’s dad was also a big guy. So he comes by his girth naturally.

Gotta make that money for the university's athletic program.

Plus with how down the OVC will be with Murray State and Belmont leaving, might as well load up on some marquee non-con games while you can. Them getting ISU at home is interesting though. Could be a two-for-one deal similar to what they did with Bradley a few years back.

Final Kenpom standings of 2022 for our opponents:

Home EXH: Quincy- DII
Home Eastern Illinois- 357 (out of 358...)
Home UMKC- 214
Home Monmouth- 158

Neu UCLA- 11
Neu Baylor/Virginia- 4/72

Home Lindenwood- DII
Home Syracuse- 69 (nice)

Neu Texas- 15
Home B1G Team TBA?
Away B1G Team TBA?
Home Alabama A&M- 314

Neu Mizz- 137
Home Bethune-Cookman- 333

Cupcakes to start and a good warm-up. Gets serious quickly in Nov with 2 possible Q1 opportunities. Have to not choke on a cupcake and convert on probably 3/4 of these bigger neutral site games and we will be in great shape to start the Big ten schedule.

I see 11-12 wins (+1counting exhibition), which would be good starting position for us.
All I care about in the early non-con is how well it prepares us for the tough games. We go from DII to 357 to 214 to 158 but it would be nice to work toward an opponent ranked about 50 in the 4th game leading up to the big opponents. The new guys have to get some tick but it's tough to go from the rhythm you develop against 4 cupcakes to being tough as nails and 100% focused for a challenging opponent.

The Groce years have done a number on you
Thought I didn’t even need the /s on this one, but apparently so….

Awesome to see how much further this program has come since Brad’s first game. Am as psyched for this season as any in recent memory.

I understand neutral games is the norm but man I hope that changes.

I remember playing @ Arkansas, Seton Hall coming to town, playing at Texas, @Geoegetwon home and home with Memphis. Those were fun times

From the Fighting Illini sports web site. I don't think it has been updated for a while. No pictures of the new players and Perrin is not listed yet. Also, since it appears to not have been updated for a while weights might not be accurate and uniform numbers may change. I did not realize Mayer is 6'9". Also, bonus, how many times will Mayer be misspelled as Meyer (see Weber, Giorgi and some others I can't remember offhand)?

Average height of scholarship players: 6'7.2", adding in Serven and Warden doesn't change that much.
Average height of scholarship players last season: 6'6.6"
Losing Payne and Kofi and gaining height is impressive, and shows how much length we've gained in the backcourt
