HC or bust. And I think he'll be picky.
Yea I will agree on the picky.. Have had the opportunity to talk to Tim and I really wouldn't be surprised to see him at Illinois down the road when Brad retires. He loves it at Illinois. But he knows he needs to take that next step when the right job comes along..lets just hope that holds off for 3-4 years first. Oh and he wants that first NCAA title before he leaves.

Thoughts:
It cannot be over estimated the value of our coach's ability to adapt the plan yearly to the talent he has on the roster. I see this as a regular failure for other coaches / programs all the time.
So cool that he caught himself and expressed that the program is not satisfied with just a BIG title, reaching for national champ status.
Once again reminded all that we have the nation's best strength coach, the unmatched Fletch.
Got chills when he spoke of Ayo's skills as a player, but more so his accomplishments as a quality person.
This coach impresses me regularly.

I'd add to all that, that this was no easy rebuild. Lot to be happy with as a fan.

Wait, he, Torvik, predicted Indiana to go 13-7 in the Big Ten. So how can Illinois finish second in the Big Ten? Or am I missing something here?

You Sir are extremely observant. Great catch. He does have Illinois at 14-6 and IU @ 13-7. His projection order is based on his National projections. The key is he is first predictor to have Illinois winning the BIG at 14-6. I hope he's right. Go Illini.

He’s always been a good recruiter, but this is his first high level success and he’s making far more than he has anywhere else. I’d expect him to stick around for a while. While the job he has done is amazing, I think what he is learning from Brad is important for his long term future. 3-4 years would be great if we can keep him that long.

Well if he wants a title and the HC timeline is 3-4 years that would make all of us very happy.

The ol' basketball side of the message board has been dead most of the weekend. Impressive what a good start to the football season can do.

We're picked second in the unofficial preseason media poll:
  1. Indiana, 43 (19)
  2. Illinois, 81 (6)
  3. Michigan, 92 (1)
  4. Michigan State, 139
  5. Purdue, 141 (1)
  6. Ohio State, 167
  7. Iowa, 185 (1)
  8. Rutgers, 218
  9. Wisconsin, 229
  10. Maryland, 267
  11. Penn State, 304
  12. Minnesota, 334
  13. Northwestern, 362
  14. Nebraska, 378
And The Athletic ($) picked us to win with Michigan second and Indiana third:

"1. Illinois

Everyone agrees the league is wide open. Comically so. For that reason, I’m just going with the most on-paper talent here. That’s the Illini. Yes, Brad Underwood loses a ton, but Shannon, Mayer, Melendez, Hawkins and Clark might be the best top-five in the league. It might take time for the Illini to figure things out, and reliance on youthful depth will take a toll, but in the long run, I like Illinois."

"3. Indiana

Yes, IU is widely considered the league favorite. It’s also essentially the same team that finished 48th in KenPom’s efficiency ratings last year. It’s the same team that needed an epic collapse from Michigan to reach the NCAA Tournament. It’s the same team that shot under 32 percent on 3s. There’s talent, though, led by Jackson-Davis, and the league’s best returning defense."

I do not understand the Indiana hype one bit. I am far more scared of Michigan and Purdue.

One person voted us 11th??? I didn't realize Seth Davis voted in that poll

Looking at breakpoints in the total ratings points:
- Top 3 (IU, IL, MI)
- Next 4 (MSU, PU, OSU, Iowa)
- Next 2 (Rutgers, WI)
- Next 2 (MD, PSU)
- Bottom 3 (MN, NW, NE)

Interesting that there was a single first place vote for Purdue and Iowa from the second tier.

Hard to quibble too much with the overall bunching, but do agree with the Athletic's rank order of Illini and IU in the top tier.

lol yeah and imo they are going to get their wake up call early when they have to play Arizona and UNC. I keep hearing all the talent & experience they are returning but its the same talent that finished with a losing record in BT conference play, was one of the last four teams to be selected for last season's Big Dance, only to get utterly destroyed & ran out of the building 82-53 by the St Mary Gaels:ROFLMAO:
Like damn, you would have thought a beat down like that to a team with a really goofy nickname would humble them somewhat but it looks like it hasn't. I shouldn't disrespect St Mary's nickname here since the nickname of Hoosier is 1000 times more goofy & stupid sounding.

On the flip side, I can't wait to see our new look / reloaded team. Should be a very entertaining season.

Ill take 2nd in the league after losing so much talent. Wiscy and Ohio St always seem to do better than wgat they have on paper.

I'm getting Talen Horton-Tucker vibes from Ty. Sounds like the high motor player who can get into the lane and create space with his size.

who would be so hateful that they would somehow think illinois is the 10th or 11th best team in the big ten?
A Hoosier i guess to make sure they we #1 preseason. Indiana in basketball is sort of like ND in football, the
talking heads want them to be good because "its good for the sport" and over rank the team and their recruits
every year.

I must admit that, as much as anyone, I can't wait to see this Illini team play for real. From top to bottom, the roster is filled with skill and athletic talent like seldom seen in C-U.

However, like a few who have seen many very promising teams struggle to find leadership, chemistry, motivation, timing, and ultimately wins, my enthusiasm is somewhat anxious. There are too many new cogs for this wheel to come out purring. There will be some head shaking moments and a loss or two that will glow in the loss column until selection Sunday.

The point? Don't load this team up with superlatives and declarations. They have talent and solid coaching but no history and will put much dependence on young kids who have never played a college game or in an Illini uniform. But those talented kids are eager and determined to prove they are winners. It will take time, but ultimately, after a few weeks, the boneheaded blunders and the weight of elite expectations should be coached and trained away and...maybe...disappear. If and when that happens, let the superlatives fly!

I think the seasons of both Indiana and Illinois heavily hinge on their respective freshman 5ish star guards.

If they don’t perform it doesn’t mean they finish outside the top half of the league, but getting good to great play out of them is something that can really lift their teams up.

The Penn State writer picked Illinois 11th.

The Rutgers writer picked Illinois 8th.
