Here's a short write up about the scrimmage on the U of I basketball sports site. At least it gives some specifics about how the scrimmage was structured:

Men's Basketball October 22, 2022 Illini Scrimmage Kansas

ST. CHARLES, Mo.– No. 23 Illinois continued its preparation for the 2022-23 season on Saturday, facing No. 5 Kansas in a closed scrimmage at Lindenwood University's Hyland Arena.

The programs squared off for nearly 3.5 hours on the afternoon, playing a variety of formats including a 20-minute game, then three 10-minute quarters, followed by four 4-minute situational periods, and concluding with segments against zone defenses.

"We got exactly what we wanted from today," Illinois head coach Brad Underwood said. "It was good to go up against a different jersey for the first time and play out a number of different situations. Every game went down to the wire, which was a great experience for both teams.

There were a lot of things I saw today that I liked, but also a number of areas we know we need to improve upon," Underwood continued. "This is why you have these scrimmages; to learn about yourself and get back to work."

Illinois will make its debut at State Farm Center on Friday (Oct. 28), hosting Quincy in an exhibition game at 7 p.m. Tickets are available here.
Serious question on these - have we ever heard after one of these scrimmages that we didn’t either win or look rock solid another competitive unit?

Even before the past 3 years I feel we’d hear how we won these types matchups.

There might be a tacit agreement between coaches not to treat it too much like a game, so both sides have "wins" they can talk about. Different line-ups, some of which may be experiments, a series of short games with multiple formats, etc.. There's nothing on the line here except maybe fan pride --coaches just want to motivate the guys and try things out.

To answer your question, I don't think I've ever heard much negative spin out of one of these scrimmages. I think it's fantastic that the guys are going at it with another national caliber program.

Ty could be the best defensive player we have seen here in a while. As a team overall as well this could be a top five defensive unit in the country.

True. I will say that Kansas sources are saying Illinois won the scrimmage.

But the most important part of these is working against a different team. It’s a glorified practice and important for development more than the score.

I'm pretty sure we lost to Vanderbilt in 2018.

I believe Dayton dusted us atleast once maybe twice in this secret scrimmage. Back in the Groce years.
