Anyone else concerned with how out of shape Mayer appears to be?

We were probably pencilling him in for ~30 mpg at the 4/5 spots, and that was before Goode got hurt. I like Dain’s potential but I don’t see him as ready for a steady rotation spot until the game slows down for him a bit which will hopefully happen later in the season. Means we are probably going to have to lean pretty heavy on Rogers, which I do think he can handle, but he’s a freshman and will probably have games where he’s in foul trouble.

All of a sudden we don’t look as deep as I thought, particularly at the 4.
I don’t think his fitness was my main concern. He looked extremely disinterested on the defensive end 75% of the time. There were at least three times where he didn’t close out his defender shooting a three with a hand up. I get being beat and not overselling but he just kinda stood in front of the guy. It was weird stuff, especially from a guy who’s defense is supposed to be a strength.

Gross. There is no way a rivalry with this kind of history between teams from the Power 2 should be relegated to a regional network.

From 2003 (as far back as I could track it) to 2015 we played on ESPN2 every year, except once we played on ESPN. Since then, we have played once on ESPN2, and twice on each of ESPNU, BTN, and SECN. This is one of the top annual non-conference rivalries in the country. Why has this turned into a TV _______ match between the B1G and SEC? Ridiculous.
From 2003 to 2015 at least one team if not both were nationally relevant. Since then both teams were irrelevant until our comeback

Probably the only one who outplayed my expectations. Think he will see significant time this season. TF tenacity and quickness with more length.
I think people might want to slow their roll on Sencire. Having seen a couple of his Ohio HS games on TV last year, it does not surprise me that he had a strong game against Quincy — he was a top 125 recruit after all — nor that he is becoming a fan favorite. Just remember that Paxton Warden would likely be a key rotational player if not possibly a starter if he was on Quincy. I also wouldn’t be shocked if Sencire has a good showing against EIU or some other cupcakes. And the silver lining to Luke getting hurt is that Sencire will have increased opportunities in those types of games. But if he’s seeing significant time once we hit the meat of the schedule, It probably means we’ve had another injury or someone like Epps isn’t playing as well as we’ve hoped. And I say that with probably being as bullish as anyone on Sencire’s career potential. He’s tenacious, high energy and by all reports a hard worker. I’d look for him to see some time when we get into the conference schedule as an energy guy when team looks sluggish, but not significant minutes.

I'm not sure people need to slow their roll on Harris - if he plays tenacious defense, doesn't turn the ball over and pushes the pace on offense - he will play

That is literally all you need to believe - he doesn't need to be a good three point shooter or even a scorer. I agree Epps will likely get more PT early on because of his scoring, but Harris is going to be in the rotation and the better defense he plays, the more tick he will get

not one bit. he's a natty winner playing in an exhibition game against a d2 school. when the lights are bright this year, he will show up. I promise you that

If he does all those things against good competition, sure he should see minutes. But the original poster is ready to anoint him significant minutes based on 13 minutes against a Division 2 school that is picked to finish 2nd to last in its conference. And against that stellar team he fouled out in those 13 minutes. So, again, might want to slow the roll until we see your IF happen against good or at least decent competition.

I suppose it depends on what one means by significant minutes and “in the rotation” too. Are 5 mpg considered significant? 10 minutes? 15 minutes? Again, I like the kid’s game and think he will have very good career. But to anoint him significant minutes based on an exhibition is going overboard to me. I mean it’s not like he went 3 for 3 from three in an exhibition against Lewis or something.

Actually be a lot less impressed with 3/3 as that can go cold as ice instantly. Effort and quickness fueled by energy are much more dependable. Defense will always earn time. By significant I was thinking 5-8 mins.

I was joking about the 3 for 3. That’s what BBV did in his first exhibition and go read the posts about him right after that game if you weren’t on here then.

I can see him averaging 5-8 mpg (thanks for clarifying that). I’d bet on the low side of that though — probably more like 4-5 mpg. And I wouldn’t really consider the low side as significant minutes. I think Podz averaged about 4.5 mpg last year, and though he was kind of in the rotation for a bit, he had a bunch of DNPs. Like I said earlier, I can see him getting some minutes as an energy guy, and that could certainly be 1-2 minutes a half. Looking forward to seeing him and the team play Monday.

Go Illini

Goode and RJ both averaged less than 9 .

I know. Barring another injury or someone not playing as well as anticipated, I don’t think Sencire will average the 8+ mpg those 2 did last year.

Hey, I absolutely could be wrong. The good news is that though we won’t know the final answer for awhile, we start the journey of finding out in 6 days.

Well I think I have a good sign for things to come, just had our 2nd boy. His name is the best part though, Illias. I have been talking to all my family that are Illini fans and we have already started the I-L-L-I-A-S chants. Wanted to have a name start with I because our other boy's name starts with I but the wife came up with the ILL part when we changed the spelling. Can't ask for more.
