Hard to be a good shooting team when nobody runs plays or wants to pass the ball. I think even last year we had the potential to be a much better shooting team but never got close to taking good shots.

Job One: Fix 'The Culture'... 'We Are Fam-ah-ly' and all that.

Job Two: Fix The Offense You Run.

We know the Illini need that sharp creative point guard. But then what?

Something the legendary Triangle Offense revealed are certain roundball fundamentals that are the key to running a good Offense. Such as...

An Offense that quickly shares the ball with well-spaced players. An offense dominated by just one or two ball-hogs on the floor is shut down by elite defenders. And without fast, crisp ball-sharing any Offense bogs down and the defense gets settled in. Often resulting in a sad force-up shot with the clock running down.

There is no problem with ball spacing with all those Threes that are being taken today. Lots of room out there when you just get the rebound and run to your Three Line and hoist away. But where is the beauty of running an efficient, five-man floor offense that this Game provides? You can’t just shoot Threes all day every time down the floor and that kind of game would be boring as hell as fans to watch.

We can appreciate that so many guys can hit from Downtown these days. But when that dominates an Offense that is little more than ego-driven shooting demonstration better left to two guys settling a bet in a closed gym.

And guys who don't trust each other and who take desperate shots from whatever distance don't serve anybody's interests.

Not saying the Illini have to run the Triangle. But they do have to have those sharing and teammate-trusting elements (that have been sorely lacking) in whatever they run.

Getting players to buy in-to trusting and sharing the ball is the Stairway to Court Heaven. (Even a GOAT named Michael found that out).

I will say it if no one else will, this would be a really bad idea. It was pretty obviously not "Plan A" since Illini were pursuing RayJ hard, which makes this look a lot more like a desperation play than a concerted strategy. Huge difference between a 'Point Forward' that can run the offense on the break and putting a natural College 4 as the full time dedicated Point Guard. Love the confidence from Rodgers, I just don't think this is the right fit for a team trying to be competitive. If it doesn't work out, what do we do? Pray Nico Moretti can bring you something?
