I will always depressingly wonder where the 2021 would rank if we just survived Loyola and at least made the Final Four. Do I think that team was better than 1989 or 2005 or even that close? No … but do I think their level of play in early March through the BTT final was among the best I’ve ever seen from an Illini team for a span of time? I might quite honestly say yes.
Agreed

Hey Pru. In case no one said it, thank you for diverting everyones’ attention away from Podz for a couple of days.

Massive disappointment that Tyler is taking one of the new spots.

Shades of Lovie for sure now.

Hasn’t Tyler been working as an assistant to the coaches for a few seasons?
Isn’t just about every coach worth hiring already under contract with someone for the coming season?
Did Tyler get a multi-year contract?

To me this is a nothingburger with a side of yawn.

So, with respect to Tyler, the guideline would require Brad to recuse himself from the hiring process or influencing others involved in the process.

The expectation should be that that’s how it played out.

I think it has already been observed, this is not a new hire. The NCAA just changed the rules regarding the number of coaches who can be in the gym for practice. Now, instead of being in the gym only when the other assistants are out recruiting, TU can now be in the gym even when all the other assistants are present. He cannot recruit off campus. Shauna Green just “elevated” her two assistants who were in the same position. But please, don’t let me stop the complaining by those who are interested in seeing corruption wherever they look.

I’m all for giving Ty a shot but isn’t this why Jaylon Tate was not successful? Great handles and passing but zero threat of a shot allows defenses to sag off significantly?
IMO this is a horrible comparison. Tate couldn’t shoot, he wasn’t a rebounder, he couldn’t penetrate, dish, dunk or defend with very limited athleticism or size. He wasn’t a threat inside or out and he didn’t make others around him better.

It was a just bad combination having the weakest Illinois basketball coach of all time with a PG with limited skills. Tate’s role was usually nothing more than walk the ball up the court (eating valuable seconds in shot clock) and making the simple pass to a wing. The wings then started the offense.

Ty is a beast. He excels at breaking people down off the dribble, distributing and scoring … and rebounding. Ty has a very high basketball IQ. And he can defend and dunk in your face.

The only similarities I see in TY & Tate is the poor outside shooting. But Ty still has time to fix this. I am a huge Ty Rogers fan. I will just leave it at that.

I don’t really think you can treat Frank’s alpha status on that team as something working AGAINST him in this comparison but rather something in his favor - at least for those stats. No disrespect to those great early 2000s squads, but Deron shared the ball and spotlight incredibly equally with Dee and Luther, and that’s what made that team so great. Senior year Deron on the 2006 team had he come back would have had some crazy stats.
I totally agree. Bruce Weber Saw it, NBA scouts saw it, I saw it, as did most coaches. Deron was a very very very rare talent. He was the heart and soul of the O5 team. He made Dee great. He made Luther great, he made EVERYONE better .. even Bruce Weber.

I loved watching Frank, Gill & Anderson. They were my favorite Illini of all time & then along came Deron. And then came Aoy. 😀

Thanks for the endorsement Francis

It appears that Green set herself up nicely by having two excellent college players on staff that she could promote. This change has been known. In April we could have been recruiting coaches to fill these spots that offered more than these two.

Why do 2 college players work for Green but not for Underwood?

Yeah they way this whole thing went into effect halfway through the offseason I can't imagine anyone was really raiding other staffs to add big name assistants. If there is a question about whether to add big names to the expanded staff next year, it means Brad likely did his job and got this team to have a solid enough year to merit keeping his job. In that case, we will likely be fine either way.

Today I’ve talked myself into DGL being awesome and our roster being okay.

Obviously we came into this offseason with a glaring need at PG. Of course this falls on BU but I do think he’s actually recruited the PG/lead guard position well and has just had some bad luck.

Senior class- Belo and Ace should be seniors this year. Belo looked like a future AA after his freshmen season but has since flamed out spectacularly. Ace was a top 30 recruit but of course transferred out and statistically was one of the worst guards in P5 last year. As upset as folks are now they would be LIVID if that was our starting backcourt this year.

Junior class - no PG taken, presumably because we thought Belo had that spot locked up. I don’t believe Podz was taken to be a lead guard but he’s certainly shown he’s capable. A miss from BU for sure for not keeping Podz.

Sophs - Skyy and Jaden were both highly rated recruits but one flamed out and one got PO’d and transferred. If you want ding Brad for not keeping Jaden around I won’t argue with you.

So really we are somewhere around 0/4 or 0/5 on PG/lead guard the last few years. Law of averages says BU is due for a hit. DGL was a 5 star at one point, seems to have taken it personally his ranking dropped so much. Very possible he winds up a better player than Jaden. Certainly a better athlete and looks to be a 3 level scorer like Jaden.

And this is where I think it’ll be okay: let’s assume both turn into 15ppg+ scorers who are in college for at least 3 years (likely given their size). As good as they both are I’m not sure we want such a small starting backcourt, so maybe from a roster fit perspective there’s only room for 1. Sencire and Ty can cover up for one smaller player, I’m not sure they could cover up for 2.

So, summary, we only had room for 1 small bucket getter, DGL looks to have a higher ceiling than Jaden, and law of averages says BU is due to hit at the PG spot. I’m ready!

Thoreau said, "The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation."

Here on Loyalty......it's not so quiet.
Lol, being the "best program to never win a National Championship" and going from a stretch of absolute dominance (2000-2006) to utter futility (2010-2019) to a meteoric rise (2020-2022) and feeling like we don't have the NCAA results to show for it ... leads to an interesting fan psyche. :ROFLMAO:

While it went into effect on July 1 it was announced in January. This wasn't some surprise.

I think we had some serious deficiencies on the coaching side this past season. This move by the NCAA gave us an ability to try to fix that. Instead, we just have the exact same staff.

I get that this was not going to bring us a big name. That's not what I'm asking for. I'd like a person added who can help fix the problems that we're obviously seeing.

I could be wrong. Maybe moving Zach Hamer from the back room to the court will correct our deficiencies and we'll be worrying next year about how we can replace him after he gets stolen from us by Kansas or Kentucky.
