At some point this team has to perform above expectations right?
2021 team did in the regular season but postseason :poop: the bed.
Last year disappointed majorly aside from the UCLA and Texas wins.

Why not this year be the year we overachieve?

I don't see Dain not starting, I believe he had the highest offensive efficiency last year. I also think he played well and exceeded expectations. For some reasons his mistakes are overemphasized and his contributions are minimized. I can see him not finishing games if his free throws are questionable or their are defensive mismatches. Coleman can play the stretch 4 to Dain's true Center big.

Thoreau said, "The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation."

Here on Loyalty......it's not so quiet.
Here on Loyalty, it often the feeling too much desperation and not enough QUIET.

I could see Domask or Guerrier starting and Goode or Dain coming off the bench.
So:

Ty. 6’7”
Goode 6’7”
Shannon 6’6”
Hawkins 6’10”
DD 6’9”

bench

sencire
shannon
hansberry
harmon
guerrier
domask
dgl

quite deep!
I wonder if we see Ty's and Dainja's time deliberately offset so that there is more driving room for Ty. i.e. If Ty plays 30m, and Dain plays 25m, then Dain is on the floor the 10m Ty is resting. This also keeps rebounding on the floor at all times.

Serious question here, did Ty do that much taking his man off the dribble and driving? Probably just getting old, but I really don’t remember that much. I do remember him backing guys down a fair amount when he was playing more at the point. Problem I had with that was it made him ball dominate and made things a bit one dimensional. I was encouraged by a tape of a practice that was recently posted where he showed some nice interior passing.

I’m not sold on the Ty experiment as I think it could negate some of the strengths he showed this past year. Hopefully an off season practicing at the point plus the game in general slowing down for him in his second year are enough to make him at least a serviceable PG. Can’t wait for the season to start if for no other reason than the discussion about whether this will work/is working will be based on a much larger and applicable body of work.

I’m big fan of Coolhand Luke. But I feel like
Domask has more offensive tools…more of a shot vocabulary and finishes better. He ain’t flashy but I think he has the more rounded game. (That’s based on limited info/sample size of both however. ) Guerrier is anybody’s guess. Will we get Syracuse Guerrier or Oregon Guerrier? or something in between? (The latter is my bet.) I could see him starting the game either early or late in the season depending on what plays out. Obviously, this is based on what we know right now…which ain’t much.

(I don’t believe Ty played point with Team USA the majority of the time.)

I think Domask starts just due to his ability to run a team. Dain starts as well, but way less confident in that.

I like the ability to bring in Goode and Guerrier as a first rotation for Domask/Dain. I think that spark of scoring could really be beneficial.

I’m interested in seeing how QG is used. If I recall correctly, he played primarily center at Syracuse. At Oregon he didn’t play center much. I could see him and Hawk taking turns flashing into the middle when they play together.

One thing I haven’t seen mentioned as a byproduct of Ty playing PG is that could mean Hansberry has more opportunities for minutes, which would be nice for his development. Any insiders have a report on how he’s looked thus far in practice?

I see a team with a variety of skills that are B1G versatile. How they fit together is...as it was last season...a huge question with anything but a simple answer. But they are basketball players who, if they want to win titles and compete in the NCAA tourney, will figure it out over the course of the season with the leadership of Shannon, Hawkins, and Ty.

This is the deepest roster of talented, B1G warriors I have seen in almost 70 years as an Illini fan. There may be questions at PG, but there are strong answers at every position for opponents to deal. If they play together and have each other's back, the sky is the limit. Yet, if there are personal goals that negate that in any way, they will instead move toward the back of the pack. It will certainly be one of the most riveting seasons in Illini history. Competition in practice should be brutal. Fan support and intense scrutiny of BU will be off the charts. Here's hoping they all find great satisfaction in winning and fulfilling their roles. Go Illini!!!

Personally, I think I would prefer that Goode could start. I think he will be essential in correcting two of last year's most pressing issues - shooting and consistent effort/chemistry.
I thought domask is supposed to bring those 2 qualities plus the ability help run the point/passing game as well. Didn't he average 4 assists last year?

Maybe he will; that would be great. But Goode has been here in the Big Ten for a few years, and he has impressed me greatly once he got used to the game and when not hurt (i.e., the end of the last two seasons).

Yes, Domask is more than just a pop up shooter. He can score off the dribble or by backing down defenders also. I believe he is going to be a pleasant surprise to a lot of people.

Well yeah, in a way. I feel his positivity/leadership will be huge. Plus, he’s been here and last year was a major bummer for him and us. Who doesn’t wanna see that kid do good after that? But I think you’re going to see plenty of coach ability and court sense out of Domask too. (Coach’s kids are often good that way.)

I just feel like Domask has the more rounded game of the two.

Still think he’s sneaky good pickup as a 6th/7th/8th man. Scoring guard with size. Think he gets hot off the bench and wins at least a few games for us.
Leading scorer (14.0 ppg) and 36 game starter for a Utah Valley team that went 28-9, 15-3 in the WAC, and made the semis in the NIT going 3-1. Averaged 20.8 in those 4 NIT games including a career high 32 versus Cincinnati. Great pick-up.
