BUT, we do have some guys on the team who can and should be better at shooting, so I would amend your statement to We're not an elite shooting team, at this point. I think ColeHawk will shoot in the mid 30's %, Guerrier should be better when and if his wrists get better (He has historically been a much better 3 point shooter), Domask will shoot at higher percentage as well - (this is an outlier), DGL apparently torches the nets in practice (remains to be seen if it will translate to games), Harmon is also historically a much better shooter than he has shown so far.
We are not an elite shooting team, period, whether Brad said it or not. Elite to me means consistency, and the only one with that is Luke, when he's healthy. TSJ is beautiful when on but is still flashy from outside.

Domask, Guerrier, Harmon, DGL...all shot those percentages outside the B1G. We'll see if they improve in conference, maybe the B1G being down will help, but historically the defense is much tougher in conference.

Coleman...no way. He is who he is.

unfortunately Hawkins shouldn't be anywhere near the 3 pt line. 3+ years of shooting % evidence to prove it. But then again not a good driver either.

I disagree, I think if he gets a good look he needs to take them. If he doesn't hit one of the first 2 or 3 then he should dial it back and be very selective from then on. For our offense to work he needs to be able to draw the other centers out of the paint to open up the lanes for the others.

The clock is really ticking for Coleman. I would like to give him more chances but is he a pumpkin at this point?

I hear what you are saying, but I still think that Hawkins will shoot in the mid 30% range, if he is taking open look shots in rhythm, which he should be doing with this offense. Previous 2 years, he took far too many pressured shots, out of rhythm. This was often due to the offense sputtering and him chucking up shot clock beaters. Also, ColeHawk passed up far too many wide open looks last year which may have improved his percentages. He needs to take those. Brad said he wants him shooting more, so there must be something there that he sees. Also, I have watched him pregame practically not miss an outside shot, so the kid has the ability.
It remains to be seen how this team will shoot for the rest of the year. The potential is there, but will they play up to their potential? I guess we will see....

100%. Coleman Hawkins is a mismatch nightmare when he either pulls the other teams center out of the lane or is guarded by a smaller player. He should have the advantage in both cases. This largely is dependent upon his ability to pick and pop, hitting open looks from the top of the key. His ability to do this is his ticket to the league, and it is within his skillset. I agree that his numbers don't show it. The staff seems to think that he can do it, so I am going to go with the guys who get payed to make the calls.

We haven’t shot the ball better than last year, but we’ve taken better shots. I consider that progress.
A few of our guys are definitely due for some positive regression.
DGL hit one late against WIU & was visibly excited and relived… it was kind of a surprising reaction considering the game was over by then. I surmise he’s been in his head a bit about his shot. I’m excited for the day it all finally clicks for that kid.

Well I suppose it makes sense that telemarketers are knowledgeable about hawkin stuff.

The question at this point is not "should" Coleman have the offensive advantage, but can Coleman execute on that advantage. He seems to do okay on catch/shoot 3s in rhythm. Once he stops to think -- about the shot, whether to pass, anything -- it is all over. I'd also expect lobs for him, either on cuts, or on a give/go. They don't seem to be in the offensive sets.

"Illinois has played up to expectations so far. As expected, the defense is elite. As expected, the offense can get shaky and a little stagnant with no true point guard and the continual free throw woes. But an elite defense with a Big Ten Player of the Year-caliber stud like Shannon can carry you an awfully long way in a Big Ten that has a host of questions after Purdue. No one is on Purdue’s level right now, but Illinois might be the best bet to finish second because the defense might be that good and Shannon has no business playing college basketball right now. He's a complete, utter manchild who is playing violent basketball. Shannon is the best wing in the Big Ten by a wide margin."

We all wish we had better shooters and a point guard. We don't have them. What we do have is one of the best defenses in the country and the best player on the court just about every night. It's not perfect, but don't let perfect be the enemy of good. This team is really good and if things break the right way, can make some serious noise in March.

I remain optimistic we will continue to climb both defensive and offensive metrics.

Defensive as we continue to build rapport and connectivity.

Offensively as we get some positive regression from our transfers who are career 35% 3 pt shooters but according to the article are shooting just 16% so far. Additionally, at least in the western game it looked like we had more of an emphasis on offensive rebounding. If we focus on offensive rebounding, and getting out in transition, those along with improved shooting should get us to the 30-40ish range on offense.

My favorite line about Terrance: He's a complete, utter manchild who is playing violent basketball!

Love it!

Our transfer shooters aren't hitting the 3 ball as consistently as they have on other teams. I go back to that Marquette game where the game plan was to let us shoot the 3 ball, so we did. We had many open shots that we missed, and still had a chance to win it at the end. We won against Kansas, because we were hitting the outside shot fairly well, and the Marquette game would have been a win as well.

He's been very durable so far, but as much as he hurls his body around (and at the speed he does it, mostly), I get anxiety every time he attacks.
Yup, Look for Sissoko to take his shot like he did with Ayo.
