What’s the point of this? You think we are better without TSJ?
I think teams have us scouted and we’re struggling to adjust is what that shows on Defensive side. On the positive, the emergence of Hawkins who has been phenomenal shows on the Offense. Also, pre-suspension is essentially non-con so half of those games are fluff.

BU gets a lot of criticiso for his strategy and in game coaching but his work with Coleman has been great. Coleman tragically under rated by fans and media.

Yeah, the data tells a story.

We've had three different identities this year.

Pre suspension we were solid offensively, great defensively, and played fast. Without Shannon, we became elite offensively while playing at a more methodical pace, but the defense became somewhat pedestrian. Now, with Shannon back, our offense is still pretty elite and we've picked up the tempo again, but our defense is bordering on bad. Is Shannon the reason the defense is bad? No, because the defense really started its decline when he went out. As @Saturdaze pointed out, it's probably more to do with the fact that there's plenty of film out on us now and we no longer get to beat up on cupcakes. And I don't love the pairing of a high tempo with a bad defense. We're playing with fire in that regard.

But the reason for posting is to track our progress toward returning to our non-con form, which I think is the best version of this team. As the data shows, the thing holding us back is defense. And our decline in that department is kind of remarkable. Any concerns about what is happening on the offensive end is just noise, IMO.

That’s not my interpretation of those stats or the situation. A lot of things could play into them, teams you play, other players playing up to their ability, we’ve changed or defense and it’s gone to crap, etc. You didn’t post anything other than the stats, so I’m trying to understand what your point is?
Might have something to do with level of competition

Not so much with Ty

I honestly think its interesting. I think it's a good post. I like to see data like that. I'm not sure what it means, but its kind of crazy.

Does there have to be a particular point?

It's a fact. Discuss as you want.

I agree it’s interesting. Which is why I was I was interested in some commentary on what it means.
I feel the most important column headed toward the dance is the “defensive rating” / trending down - it’s possible our 7.5 man rotation is getting tired .

The numbers don’t lie , but you can still make a lot of different points with the data and support or dislike various aspects of the team based upon them

I believe @IllGuardU already pointed to defense , so … yes it’s a concern

100% The defense is the issue and needs to be fixed. I made my first comment because that data seemed to me to be slanted to say we are better off without TSJ.

If you watch a game, there’s no way you can think this team is better defensively without TSJ playing defense. IMO he’s played the best defense on the team the last two games.

That data was too simple IMO, because there are so many other factors that could contribute to it. Strength of schedule, schematic changes (or more likely lack of them), or other players defensive ratings over those games.

Me simply watching (I’m not an expert), I think teams have more tape to scout what we do and we struggle to make adjustments. Teams know we are going to switch and they exploit that to get matchups with quicker players on Domask and Goode. I could be wrong, but I don’t see us making adjustments specific to the teams we play or their game plan in game. I do see that in our offensive game plans.

Also, I love Domask, but feel like his defense (along with most of our team) has slipped since early in the year. Like you, I think that is probably due to fatigue.

Now that I've stepped back from the ledge after the MSU game, I really do think we will win the next five. Yes, I think we will finally slay MD in College Park. MSU is much better than their record, and we simply made mistakes that allowed them to win...it's not like we got drubbed by 20 at Rutgers (feel the burn Bucky). I still believe this team can make some noise, even if that only means making it to the Sweet 16.

The interior defense just needs to get better. We allow too many buckets in the paint, whether that is Hawkins being pushed around, or guards just slicing through the lane. I don't pretend to know the answer to that, but if we can shore up the middle, we can compete with almost anyone. I'm not even that scared of Purdue. I wouldn't want to play UConn early though...they look like the favorite to me right now.

We aren't beating Maryland at their place if the defensive tactics are the same as last time we played them. Hopefully adjustments are made and we force one of the worst shooting teams in America to actually make outside shots.

I could see the conferences saying: Here are our rules. If you want a chance to compete in our tournaments, you need to follow these rules. They might also announce the rules, say they are adopting them, and put them up for adoption before threatening a split. I suspect that any rules they adopt will force 50-75% of the schools out of Div I due to the cost.

As for the rules, I expect something like a pro like blueprint, and then seeing if other conferences adopt it prior to making any "threats" of splitting off. e.g. Schools will sign FB/BB players as employees. The schools own the NIL rights. There is a hard salary cap of $BB for Basketball and $FB for football. There are minimum salaries in each sport.

Any tax accountants out there? If the players become employees, do all of the other benefits, e.g. room/board/trainers/tuition become taxable benefits? If so, those salaries are going to have to be huge.

This is obviously a weird situation, but I'll go out on a limb and say that the tax implications won't have a meaningful impact on salary decisions for student-athlete-employees..

There is a specific exception allowing exclusion of lodging from taxable employee benefits provided by educational institutions, so I don't see any problems here.

The cost of trainers seems to me to be what's called a "working condition fringe benefit", meaning it's not a taxable benefit. The trainers' salaries are otherwise deductible to the university/DIA, therefore they're not going to get added to the athletes' taxable income.

By "tuition" I assume you mean scholarships that the student-athletes receive to cover tuition. I don't see any reason why the taxability of scholarships would change just because the student-athlete also becomes an employee. If a student becomes employed by the university library during his/her enrollment at the university, his scholarships don't all-of-a-sudden become taxable. Same situation, I believe, for potential student-athlete-employees.

End tax geek-out.

That explains why the local universities, and school districts are building apartment complexes for the teachers. A ~32% saving on the marginal tax rate (22% fed + 9.3% state + 1% medi) is the equivalent of a 16-25% raise given that housing typically runs 50-75% of the budget locally.

Good points all around. Especially about exploiting the switches.
