Was it asinine when more fouls were called against our opponents when Kofi was on the team?
Kofi played 95 games for the Illini. In those 95 games, we had...

- A foul advantage in 64 games (67.4% of total).
- Even fouls in 7 games (7.4% o total).
- A foul disadvantage in 24 games (25.3% of total).

And our games vs. Purdue:

2020 W vs. Purdue: Disadvantage of 6.
2020 W at Purdue: Advantage of 1.
--- Zach Edey joins Purdue ---
2021 W vs. Purdue: Advantage of 5.
2022 L vs. Purdue: Disadvantage of 8.
2022 L at Purdue: Disadvantage of 4.

So overall, we had a disadvantage of 12 vs. Purdue during Kofi's tenure. And either way, whatever advantage we had in fouls while Kofi was with us is practically nothing compared to that Purdue stat.

Anyone who follows NBA and their draft process, is CoHawk getting any first round chatter?

Nope ... Everyone I talk to NBA wise is saying second round as of now ...

There are a few teams who do not have him on their board for one reason or another ...

Coleman is one of the most misunderstood guys ... I have had to sell him to a few scouts ... Which is just crazy to me but that's the NBA nowadays ...

It's always good when I get to remind these guys and GMs that I tried to tell y'all about Ayo and you didn't listen ... Might want to listen now ... :ROFLMAO:

for his sake , I hope he only sees the United Center as a visitor .

Bulls are a messed up franchise
Could fit an immediate need on their roster with lack of front court players

Especially one who can shoot and be as versatile as Coleman

I would be curious how is strength translates to the NBA and if that makes him more of a 4 or 5 on a team

It's tough officiating guys that big... There were many occasions where Kofi got absolutely mauled and refs swallowed their whistles...now, I'm sure the same can be said about Edey to a degree, but Edey very much gets NPOY treatment. For as great as Edey is, there is simply no way the guy has commited such a low volume of fouls in comparison to every other big in the country. Aside from that, although Edey definitely has a part in this, the fact that Purdue is 33-0(!!!) in the officiating battle over the past year and 62-1 in the past 63 games IS asinine.

Purdue is an extreme statistical outlier compared to other teams that draw a lot of fouls, including Illinois with Kofi in 2021 and 2022.

49 of the top 50 teams in terms of KenPom free throw rate this season rank 95th or worse in terms of limiting their opponent's free throw rate (and the top 10 teams are all 180th or below), which makes sense given the style of play (drawing contact, attacking the basket, etc.).

The only exception is Purdue, which is 11th (top 3%) in KenPom free throw rate and does even better at limiting their opponents free throw rate (7th, top 2%). Maybe it's the shoes.

Gibbs-Lawhorn is team leader in Field Goal Attempts per 40 minutes. When you're 22.2 % on threes and 44.4 % on twos, that's not gonna get it done when you've appeared in 20 games this season in non-walk on minutes. He also ranks highly in turnovers per 40 minutes as well, after the walk-ons and the very inexperienced point guard who has been injured and played very light minutes (said lightly used point guard ranks first in assists per 40, compared to Gibbs-Lawhorn who is 6th).

That Michigan game was atrocious for him. The fact that it came when nobody was paying attention is not an excuse in my opinion. Those were extended minutes and an opportunity for him, whether he was auditioning for Underwood or the rest of NCAA D1. You're not in High School/AAU anymore, you don't need to look to score every time the ball touches your hands. He needs to learn how to play within an offense and pick his spots and shot selection better. Every possession matters, you can't go around wasting them.

I'd love to see a scenario where he is on the team and a contributing member for 2024-25, but what he has shown this season is really lacking.

I keep hoping every game the defense gets fixed. Could you imagine how good we'd be if we had just 3 or 4 fewer defensive possessions that are completely botched and end in an opposing player getting an uncontested layup?

Happens several times per game. Just cut that in half and we probably win some games we otherwise don't.

I've seen Hawkins in the first round of some mock drafts, which as we know is to be accepted as the truth in federal court 😏

Unlike Ayo, the NBA translatability of Hawkins' game is obvious. He's still a bit of a weird mishmash of skills, but they will play at the next level.

The minus post defense ain't helping, of course. But his ability to switch and guard on the perimeter and create all kinds of havoc on the defensive end will be very appealing and the shooting/skill level offensively is plus for his size.

And it's a bad draft. Players who seem functional and translatable will get attention.

If this team were a Top 20 KP defense, they'd have the ingredients for a FF run, sadly.
It's a simplistic way to look at it, but if we could just have the defense we had at Rutgers ... man. The exciting part (in my humble opinion) is that we have evidence our defense can be good. I would say the "rustiest" we have looked since working TSJ back into the lineup was at Northwestern ... missing layups and the defense was the worst it's been in a while. I think since then, we have clearly improved:

- 62 points given up vs. Indiana (we had other issues that game!)
- 75 points given up at Ohio State (not that many when you consider we dropped 87 on them)
- 84 points given up to Nebraska in OT (and they shot out of their minds)
- 88 points given up at Michigan State (not great by any means, but many of those points were a late meltdown)
- 68 points given up vs. Michigan (while scoring 97?? Absolute beatdown, impressive even if Michigan is bad)

I know we say this like every game, but I REALLY believe we will learn a lot tomorrow. A team we should beat, even on the road, when we desperately need to get a winning streak going to prove we are a team with the capability to make a Tournament run.

It seems that this is an interesting chart.... Michigan is just bad.

What about TSJ? Is he draftable if his legal situation isn’t finalize?

If you look at depth by position transfer targets are pretty obvious.
5. Dain, Morez, XXX
4. Amani, Morez, Jakstys
3. Luke, Sencire. XXX
2. Sencire, Jase, DGL
1. Ty, Nic, DGL
A wing and big have to be priority regardless of development. Like these players but not comparable to this year’s roster. Going to need a couple of triples and a home run on transfers.

I think there will be at least 3 portal acquisitions if not 4.

Before we get any closer to March when we’ll all be obsessing about the Dance... I would like to pose questions to Illini Nation...

Who do you consider to be the greatest basketball talent/player ever to ever put on the Orange and Blue? And why?

And then...

Who is the greatest basketball talent/player that the Illini have ever played against (Big Ten or otherwise)? And why.

Andy Phillips. Best player on our best team ever.
Rick Mount was the best Big Ten player that I ever saw. Not sure about non conference players.
