Saw this on facebook and maybe I just skipped through the 17 pages of this thread and missed it...
But TJ can pass Don Freeman for Illinois all time single season scoring record by scoring just 25 points...

That's awesome!
Need an asterisk if that happens...Freeman did it in 24 games...he averaged a double double with 28 per game and 12 boards. He was a 6'3" small forward and an elite athlete.

yeah, this is gonna be sacrilege to some (many?), but Shannon is better than late-stage Illini Ayo (yeah, the play different positions, so not exactly apples to apples. but both were alphas and usually the best player on the floor). screw the awards.

also, Shannon should be exhibit 1 in later stage development. he's massively better than he was when he got here.
I actually agree ... I don't even think I fully appreciate JUST how good he is quite yet, even though I obviously think he is an amazing player. If he does the following two things, he'd CERTAINLY pass Ayo, at least IMO:

1. Lead us on a NCAAT run, at least to the Sweet Sixteen.
2. Hit a late game shot that either wins it or ices it for us. This was Ayo's main legacy and why is remembered so fondly ... that kid was clutch as hell.

All true, but also not different than any sports record broken in a later era. Most seemed to celebrate Caitlin Clark’s recent breaking of Pete Maravich’s record by acknowledging the contributions to the sport by both athletes. Heard his son give a very gracious interview on the topic, introducing the audience to Pete’s accomplishments, without ever questioning that Caitlin now held the record. As tacking on asterisks is tacky.

lets go with #1 - dominate games for wins
re: #2 - in NCAAT I'd rather not have to be down in the last seconds to find out how amazing he is ... maybe some game-icing FTs would count plus I think the 3 vs. WI to break the 85-85 tie counts as a late game shot albeit not in last 10 seconds

He's 0 for 0 from 3. Hopefully, by next season, he has the confidence to at least attempt one. He's such a good athlete, I have a hard time believing he can't get to 30%... He'd still be considered a non-shooter, but they'd have to respect him a little.
My tourney fantasy is we are down 2 with seconds left in the title game and Ty finds himself with the ball at the buzzer and chucks in a 3! The announcers go nuts because he had never attempted a 3 in his entire career and the ultimate legend is born!

P.s., I understand many odd things would have to happen for him to be on the floor in that scenario, but let’s say a couple fouled out and we are out of time outs … whatever … let me have my dream.

IMHO what made Ayo so special was there was never any attempt to disguise what was going to happen. Everyone, including the opposition, knew it would be Ayo taking the shot. And he still made it so many times. I can only recall one time that he didn’t come through and it wasn’t the defense that stopped him. He slipped on a wet spot, and injured his knee.

Ayo might be the most clutch player I’ve ever watched. He’s even hit multiple clutch shots for the Bulls.

Not every broken record needs an asterisk. Don Freeman took 595 shots in 65-66. Shannon has taken 400, so far. Freeman averaged 25 shots a game, which would lead the NCAA this season, by a LOT. The NCAA leader this season takes 19. The high major leader, RJ Davis, takes 16.4 shots a game.
The game has changed in numerous ways, yes there is a 3-point line, but there was also a propensity for teams to revolve their entire offense strategy around one person in those days. You just don't see usage like that these days.

I don't know whose record Freeman broke but I would bet that the game had changed between those two records. You could probably argue for an asterisk with every record that is broken.

I think its been said before but props to scheduling some Mid-Majors that would likely become tourney teams. Oakland & Colgate were much more useful than hunting teams you can blow out to bump NET rankings.
Blowing out bad teams doesn't necessarily do anything for NET ratings. Results are adjusted for opponent, so you still have to outperform relative to that. So there's risk that you hurt your rating if you don't blow them out enough.
