TSJ third team is crazy. He missed a few games but there's no way he shouldn't have been at least on the second team.

According to wikipedia we don't hang jerseys for third team All-Americans but I'm not an expert.
From fightingillini.com:

HONORED JERSEYS

The University of Illinois has honored its most decorated basketball players in school history by hanging a banner with their name and number from the rafters of State Farm Center. A total of 35 men’s players have earned a spot on this distinguished list.

Players selected to have their jerseys hung must have achieved any of the following criteria:
1) National Player of the Year
2) Enshrined in the National Basketball Hall of Fame
3) Big Ten Player of the Year
4) Consensus First- or Second-Team All-American
5) Illinois All-Century Team Member
6) Individual whose pioneering efforts made a significant impact on Illinois and international basketball

unfortunately for TSJ he was c***blocked by Edey for B1GPOY both years he was here, and 3rd team AA doesn't qualify (although I think if one of our players makes any AP AA team they should be honored by having their jersey hung in the rafters. Just MHO.

For the most part this list seems skewed to the east coast.

Probably the wrong thread, but couldn't find the right on (feel free to delete or move, Mr Dan.) Ayo's last 2 games - 34 points, 9 assists, and 23 and 10. WOW!
He has been killing it in Lavine’s absence, love watching him and Coby White!

Surely if the case gets dropped they could make an exception for him right? I don’t think you’d hear any complaining from Illini fans if that were to happen.

How does the all century team work? I’d imagine the performances he has put in this year makes him one of the best scorers to put on an Illini uniform

He misses six games and is close to breaking the season total record for points. Anyone have that number?

So, here’s how I’d make it work. 2025 will be a quarter of the century. Time to make a 2000s all century team. Dee, Deron, Ayo, Kofi and TSJ.

Just heard that Shannon was named 3RD TEAM ALL AMERICA. I would like to know what sam heck people are looking at. This kid is great athlete and should be 1ST5 TEAM PERIOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Shannon will use this as personal motivation the same way that Ayo has when Ayo's NBA draft position slipped down. And we all know what the NBA GOAT did in his ball life when he was disrespected at one point in his young career.

There's nothing like the explosive fuel of being disrespected to get one's engine's going good.

The center rafters are already full enough that I don't think there is enough space in the center rafters for exceptions. Is there enough height around the outer edge of the hall to hang banners? If so, that opens up a lot of space and I could see a secondary ring with a looser set or requirements. Trent Frazier would be high on my list of people to get a spot in that outer ring.

TSJ got screwed. He is a 1st team AA. The media shunned him due to the false allegations. It is such a joke.

As much as I think TSJ should have been a first or at worst second team AA, it’s hard to argue against the numbers. I think if you went by the eye test, he would have to make it, but his rebounding and assist numbers don’t help him. His rebounding numbers are low, but that’s only because that wasn’t required from him, the other four starters gobbled up rebounds for him to get out and run, so those numbers hurt him.

643 points agrees with KenPom's player numbers too. Didn't realize he was that close to the single-season program record!

A fun fact - TSJ currently has the same # of threes made as Deron Williams in 2004-05. TSJ is 68 for 188 while Deron was 68 for 187. Slight difference in that TSJ leads our team in threes made, but Deron was 3rd on that team.

Another fun fact in the category of "how the game has changed". The 2004-05 team took 38.8% of their field goals from three. At the time, that was 50th-highest in D-I. This year we're taking 38.3% (almost the same), but that's 150th in D-I, barely in the top half! Even 38.8% would only be around 135th.

according to fightingillini.com he has 643 points so far this season

I can appreciate even the Duke fans out in the Twitter-sphere are scratching their heads at the Filipowski selection

TSJ also needs only 6 more made free throws to break the single-season record set by Kiwane Garris in 1996-97.

Edit: and he has already broken the single-season record for free throw attempts - Garris had 245 that season, TSJ now at 246.

He got dinged from the Second Team to barely making the Third Team due to his court case. Not really any other way to explain it... it is what it is. I don't have a problem with putting the best players from Houston and UConn on the First Team, though.

His stats are right there with Knecht and his defense is miles better than Knecht, but Knecht has gotten so much hype and our team defensive ratings are not good. I like that the BTN announcers have been calling him out during games for his good defense, though.

Edit to say: Hunter Dickinson on the Second Team is a joke. Dude is averaging 18 ppg, 10 rpg, and 0 defense for a historically bad Kansas team.

With regards to a first or second team Consensus All-American, according to Wikipedia,
In Division I men's basketball, the National Collegiate Athletic Association recognizes consensus All-America teams via a points system, currently based on teams chosen by four entities: the Associated Press (AP), the National Association of Basketball Coaches, Sporting News, and the United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA). Since 1984, the NCAA has applied a standardized point system to those teams designated as "major" All-American teams to determine consensus teams. The point system consists of three points for first team, two points for second team and one point for third team. No honorable mention or fourth team or lower are used in the computation. The top five totals plus ties are first team and the next five plus ties are second team.[3]
So far, TSJ has been named a third team by AP (1 point) and a second team by 247 (which doesn’t count), and didn’t make the Sporting News list, correct? Anyone see any others?

If I did it right, a glance at the AA stats show: 1st team - TSJ led Newton and H Dick only in points, Shead and Davis in points and RBs, Knecht in points and assists; 2nd team - he led all in points, Sears in RBs, Ledee in assists. His numbers were there.

I view it as missing games due to the court case, the same as if a player missed a few games with injury. Not to mention he was rusty/probably too in his own head coming back at first.

There is another criteria:
Consideration shall be given for personal conduct in life and personal contributions to the high ideals of intercollegiate athletics.

He isn't eligible until five years after completing his collegiate eligibility and by then we'll know the outcome of his pending legal issues. That should provide some clarity. However, given that the department suspended him for his alleged actions, it remains to be seen how the committee would evaluate his candidacy.
