Too bad he doesn't have a vote in the AP poll
So there have been five eventual champions out of 39 championships that won the tournament that were not ranked in preseason. So there is a chance:)

Definitely remember Jamar Smith starting to kill it in a few games, and looked like he could be a great player. Then the bottom dropped out with the car crash. Ugh!
Yea....I think my biggest disappointment was Brian Randle....after his freshman year I predicted he would become one of the best of all time to dawn the orange & blue....then the broken hand and a couple years later....well the rest is history

my recollection is that he was a mediocre shooter before he broke his hand

Put me (once again) in the camp that being ranked is A-L-W-A-Y-S good, period. That is not giving an opinion on where we should be ranked (I share the perspective that we are a mystery, but then again ... so are many teams), but I am indeed bummed to see our preseason ranked streak come to an end, as others have said. For those who think it doesn't matter, go look up a college basketball social media page ... the last week or so are pretty much just posts about the preseason top 25. Who is overranked, underranked, etc. If you don't think there is value in people across the country seeing our logo on those lists and seeing "Illinois" in those discussions, I don't know what to tell ya.

With that said, we are literally the first team in the RV category ... someone very well might slip up in that first week, and if they do ... there's our ranking, assuming we take care of business.
I feel you. Once the season starts, I do tend to care whether we are ranked or not. It's not the most important thing, but the publicity is inarguably useful.

Right now, though, with this team and with this much in flux both here and throughout college basketball, I'm not gonna sweat it. If we are who we think we are, we have so many opportunities for huge wins and we will be ranked before we know it.

I want to know what Skyy Clark said to Tre White.

We've been told it was very positive, but... how, exactly?
Part of me thinks he regrets leaving, especially with the state of Louisville basketball.

I'm guessing valvano nc State, uconn with Kemba, Florida in 07, maybe Arizona in 97 and maybe another UConn year

Kevin Sweeney
@CBB_Central

Blown away by Ben Humrichous. The shooting plays anywhere, but he’s in phenomenal shape and really moves well. Has an NBA future, IMO. Will be interesting to see him potentially as a small-ball 5 in certain matchups this year.

Surprised this comment by Sweeney on Humrichous didn't stir any discussion... especially in light of the shade thrown his way (Humrichous) by the Sleepers Media boys.
I saw Sweeney’s comments. Noice!

I have a soft spot for sleepers media. I appreciate all the Illini content. (I think they are effective at getting discussions started that might not be otherwise…)

I must say though…Greg, in particular has some habits I find pretty annoying. For one…he digs his heels in and doubles down WAY too much.….as he is presently doing with Hum…and he previously did with Marcus D.
(To Greg’s credit he admitted he was wrong about the latter.)

Secondly, he often contradicts himself with little to no awareness of it.
(ex. He wants us to have continuity then complains when we recruit & target some 3’s a low 4s.)

He praises Brad/Illinois for adapting/scheming/building around the talents of our roster…but at the same time he questions if it will work because he doesn’t see the new pieces fitting exactly like the old pieces. Huh? It’s bizarre. He does it all the time. He thinks you just plug someone else into the same spot/role. He’s already surmising that Humrichous is the new Guerrier? Guerrier could shoot…but he was more of a power slasher type guy. They're completely different type players. (And AJ Storr ain’t Terrence…either Greg)

Most of us have a limited knowledge about Hum’s game just like we did Marcus before him…but I’m pretty sure there’s a lot more to Hum’s game then being a corner spacer.

You watch, they’ll be running actions through Hum before this over. He’s effective in the PnR…that means he can pick & pop AND we COULD utilize him a little like Krutwig if we so choose. Ben is way more well rounded than what he is getting credit for. 5th option, my butt. I look for him to be the 2nd or third option. It might even happen a lot while we’re gelling; especially.

You don’t think that age and experience is gonna be useful out there? Freshman do freshmen things sometimes. Is Will Riley gonna score 40 for us every game? Is he ever gone have a bad game? What about those games when nothing works? Ben might provide a little stability, no?

Matt Norlander article

Illinois at #22 if you just want to scroll.
I wouldn't rank us without Ivisic. That's a huge loss. Coupled with all of the inexperience throughout our roster, I think we might have some growing pains early this season. Plus I'm feeling that we'll do better early if teams don't see us coming so well.

We will quickly learn that KJ makes this a ranked team no matter who’s around him.

And it just so happens there is a lot of talent around him. Sky’s the limit.

Are we feeling like KJ is better than Demin at this point?

Exactly my point. Pre season rankings matter. Maybe less so in the transfer portal era, but they still matter.
